My parents found nineteen other families with MTM1 babies. They sent their information to every children's hospital that had a genetics department. The geneticist also received a copy. Dumbfounded, the geneticist sent a grant request to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She got the grant, then, after much research, identified the offending genetic marker in Mom's family. I imagine that it was inevitable that "MTM1 awareness" would eventually lead to a treatment. As of August 2020, a company is testing the dosages for a pre-established drug that might restore some muscle function. This drug, Tamofixen, has been shown to treat the protein imbalance that causes the muscle weakness. I'm glad that I can do my part with such grace. --- I need a new signature.

TheDogfather 09/22/20 7:45:21 AM #422	Several months ago, I started feeling slight pressure at the base of my spine whenever I got into bed. Over time, the pressure worsened into pain. By the end of it, the pain wass almost constant and was roughly a 3/10 on the typical 0-10 pain scale while Im in my wheelchair and a 4/10 while Im in bed. All throughout this ailment, the pain has always been just leftward of the very bottom of my spine. Painkillers flat-out didnt help and muscle-relaxing medicine clash with my antidepressants. A TENS Unit somewhat alleviated some of the pressure-related discomfort. There is a joint between your hip bone and your tail bone. The two hip bones and your tail bone make up your pelvis. That joint on the left side was the source of the irritation. This joint is very near the metal in my pelvis. The hardware was possibly causing a little differential movement of the joint which caused swelling. In turn, this swelling caused the pain. The steroid will alleviated the swelling thus alleviating the pain. Yesterday, someone gave me a shot of lidocaine to numb the skin on my lower back. Next, they inserted a catheter of some type. Using the fluoroscope, they guided the catheter to where they thought the source of the pain was. After the catheter was in, they shot some dye into the area so they could better visualize the area. They then guided the catheter to the exact spot. When the catheter was in the right spot, they injected the steroid. Lastly, they yanked everything out an put a band-aid on it. The injection site is a bit sore, but the swelling is barely detectable now. --- I need a new signature.
