A quick Google search suggested that there are probably a little over 300 million guns in the United States and 254 million registered vehicles. Cars are significantly more expensive and complex than guns and we are able to regulate them to some degree. Is it a perfect system? Not at all, but it's better than nothing. I don't think it would be all that complicated to maintain a similar system for guns.
