I think i see the confusion. I don't think it's making fun of George floyd. It doesn't say he's a bad person, or deserved to die, or anything like that. It's just saying that he died.

...What? It's absolutely making fun of how he died.

It doesn't just say "George Floyd died."

It's literally a joke in the form of those "I can't breathe" memes racists make on the internet. "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry against racist police brutality, and the jokes around it are absolutely making fun of it.

If you want to try to argue that wasn't her intent like TUM, I don't see how it couldn't be, but that's one thing. Intent doesn't matter, though, as people have said many times. She's literally making light of the situation with her joke.

Oh come on man. Please engage in good faith.

I compared it to making a 9/11 joke. Which you still haven't responded to. This situation is exactly a 9/11 joke

Except it's not. 9/11 was a general tragedy. And you can absolutely make racist jokes about 9/11 by likening Muslim people to hijackers.

George Floyd's death is literally a racial issue. Making fun of it is literally making light of a racial issue.

9/11 jokes don't have to involve race specifically, if you're just talking about the towers falling or whatever. George Floyd's death literally involves race specifically.

I'm so sorry.

Acknowledging George floyd died isn't racist. It was a tragedy.

It's not just acknowledging that he died. It's literally making fun of his death and how he died. And how he died is a racial issue.

You made one post.

And that post was "I laughed! But man it's okay to make these jokes just make them in private!"

Which I found not worth engaging.

I was here pretty early in the topic and everybody agreed it was insensitive but not racist. You're wrong

Everybody? Me and TUM were literally the only people posting for like 20 posts and I never agreed it wasn't racist. I was just arguing his own logic.

Sounds like you just don't want to admit you laughed at a racist joke because you don't even sound open to accepting the alternative viewpoint, so you do you.

Again, I'm not arguing that she didn't intentionally make a breathing joke about someone who died not being able to breathe. I admit full well that she did that. The only thing I'm arguing is that I don't believe his race had anything to do with it.

Because nothing is ever racist or even racially insensitive to you because you don't give a shit.

You've now made this abundantly clear. You've done this like a dozen times now over the last few months and now I'm convinced you're just trolling.

Oh no

You're all right, red, but you're just wrong here.

George floyd is dead, and that is a tragedy. He's still dead, regardless of whether anyone makes a crappy pun about it

His death was a huge news story/current event. This poster is the equivalent of "you make my heart crumble like the twin towers"

It's not racist

I mean it's been spelled out very clearly why it's racist so uh are you sure you just don't want to admit that you laughed at a racist joke

Basically, you're trying to argue her intent matters because "She was just trying to make some cute dumb joke to ask some guy out and she thought 'Gee, I'll make a joke about this guy that died!'" is apparently something that happens in your world and it's cute and dumb? It's not. So if you want to argue intent, there's STILL no way to even try and argue her intent was innocent. So your own argument fails. But at the end of the day, the intent doesn't matter.

Because literally nobody would make that joke without understanding how it would be viewed as racist. Nobody is THAT dumb. If you're making a George Floyd "I can't breathe" joke, you got if from one of two places:

  1. Having knowledge of his death and the circumstances surrounding it, since the way it was covered it's pretty much literally impossible to just "casually" know of it if you know anything at all. Either you know George Floyd died and you don't know the details, or you know how he died which means you know the details. Or you just don't know who George Floyd is at all if you literally live in a hole.
  2. She stole some edgy meme she saw online, which you wouldn't do if you didn't know the context.

You're doing backflips here trying to find reasons that this girl just "innocently" made this joke, and there's just no way. It doesn't matter if she thought "Well I'll make this joke and be the one person to NOT be racist in making it!" The joke in itself is racist.

Ignorance of what? If you know how he died enough to make an "I can't breathe" joke, then you literally know the circumstances surrounding his death. There is no "accidentally" ignorant, here. At best, it's willful ignorance of the problem or movement and what they mean to black people. And in that case, it's still racially insensitive. At worst, there's actually malice behind it and then it's just straight up racist. We don't have enough facts to say there's malice and it's straight up a racist action, but we absolutely have enough facts to know it's racially insensitive, which is literally what they said, so there should be no issues taken.

He died to police brutality escalated against him because he was black.

I'm not sure how you can say it's possible to make fun of his death without making light of the problem.

It has nothing to do with what George Floyd did in his life.

It has to do with the fact that he was, for a long while, the most prominent image for the movement against police brutality against black people. He's the "poster child" for it. You literally can't make fun of his death without making light of the problem because it's literally how/why he died.

you can be accidentally racially insensitive

it's impossible to be sensitive to all things at all times

You really think it's possible to be "accidentally" racially insensitive about George Floyd of all things, as much as it was in the news and what it lead to?

It doesn't have to take malice, but it absolutely does take willful ignorance at the very least.

Alright, let me spell it out for you, here, since I'm really hoping it's the "sheltered" or "ignorant" answer and not the other one.

Police brutality against black people is still a very real problem today. It's a huge problem and concern for black people across the entire country.

Making fun of George Floyd's death is making light of that problem. It's basically saying "I don't care how you feel about it, to me it's just a joke."

That is racially insensitive. It's being ignorant of, or even possibly purposely ignoring how people who are dealing with this very racially charged issue feel.

You do this every single time. You seem to think that unless somebody pretty much drops the n word, there's no other way to be racist or racially insensitive.

What exactly is wrong with what I said? I'm not defending the joke they made, just saying it isn't racist.

First, the phrase they used was "racially insensitive."

Making a joke about the death of a man who has been one of the leading images behind the messaging about police violence against black people for a stupid dance poster is certainly racially insensitive. If you can't figure out how, you're either sheltered, ignorant, or just don't care.

Eh, it's certainly in poor taste, but I wouldn't call it racist. There's no evidence I see that would lead me to believe they wouldn't have made the same in poor taste joke had he been white.

Now, if you want to talk about racist, I definitely see that in some of the complaints aimed at her.

You ever once just stop and think before you make posts like this

I mean you don't because you do this a lot

But maybe you should

I'd have to actually research the specific "science" behind it on like the wikis and junk, but that's why they need the suits instead of just throwing those little discs at themselves like they do other objects.

I thought the science of the whole shrinking/expanding thing was that the item itself maintained its density (i'm not a science guy). Like basically mini-ant man punch will still have the same force as regular Ant-Man punch. So theoretically a blown up pez dispenser should just fly away when hit by a motorcycle because it would still weigh less than half a pound. And the building would also not be portable because it would still weigh like a building.

Am I just wrong?

I thought that was why Ant-Man was able to actually punch things with impact when mini.

I don't know the specifics behind Ant-Man himself, but the density/strength/such remaining is specifically because of the suit itself. When they shrink or expand objects, they're just straight up shrinking and expanding them. So when the Pez dispenser became like a 15 foot Pez dispenser, it had the mass to match. The suit itself is specifically what gives Ant-Man those special properties where he keeps his strength and all that. The suit's engineered to work with the Pym particles in a way that isn't applied when they just expand/shrink objects.

Unless you're talking about the difference in properties between Ant-Man himself and the items they shrink/expand. That's because the funky science stuff behind Ant-Man is specifically because of the suit, whereas in the latter there's no special suit or anything, they're just straight up making stuff bigger and smaller.

But yeah, isn't the entire fundamental idea behind Ant-Man's powers that even when he's small his body maintains all of its density/momentum/whatever as if he was big, and that's why his punches actually work when he's shrunk?

But now you have a tiny portable building, pez dispensers that cause motorcycles to crash, and cars that turn into hot wheels. I know I'm overthinking it but they didn't even try to explain it away with some dumb one-liner.

I'm a bit confused how these are at odds. In the latter, they're just shrinking and expanding things. The Pez dispenser causes the motorcycle to crash because they blew it up to like 300x its size, there's not really any need for there to be some kind of science explanation about it. It's just "I threw it then made it go big." Likewise, they're shrinking real cars.

I don't think there's really anything deeper to it.
