Like I said, police reform isnt one viewpoint that will give the same answer every time. People have different ideas of what it should look like. I dont know how this can be a hard concept to grasp, so do get it right.

You tell me, what does a bouncer do in that situation with no police around?

... call them? Or to my earlier scenario, crime happens, police find evidence, need to arrest person, person wants to shoot or stab people who want to arrest them.

But I take your point - fair enough. Do you know of any articles or books I should read on this?

Bouncers dont need guns, lol. And bouncers cant make you stay in a drunk tank. They just make you go somewhere else.

I think FORCE, which seems to be your concern with this topic, should not be outright abolished. A guy with a gun needs to be taken out after all.

MedeaLysistrata posted...
Force shouldnt be privatised either.

But this is just my point, I'm literally not aware of what the actual viewpoint entails in terms of specifics. What does a bouncer do in this situation if someone has a knife or gun?

There are two separate campss, prison abolition/police abolition and you can have either without the other. So it would depend on who you ask. "Police reform" isn't monolithic

I don't see how police prevent violent crime unless they are on scene as it happens. They show up after the fact.

What about outside nightclubs where a lot of alcohol fueled violence happens? In other scenarios, what happens with apprehending suspects down the line who don't go quietly?

Off-topic but what would you do if that happened now? Do you think the murderer is going to wait for you to call the police and then for them to subsequently arrive, if you ask him nicely or something?

He could be locked out but trying to get in. Or if it's not a murderer, a local resident who has been stalking/harassing and wants to do harm. Just for the sake of a more extreme example.

Help me out here. What do you do if a murderer knocks on your door and says I want to do a murder on you now? I know I have a case of Dumb Brain here but I've been doing a lot of reading on defunding the police, and I'm down to clown, but all I can get out of abolish the police people is that they do in fact mean literally abolish the police. Under what circumstances? How? What about random violent crime? Readings??

Dear Leader Dreams of Sushi

North Korea is a mythically strange land, an Absurdistan, where almost nothing is known about the people or, more important, their missile-launching leaders. There is, however, one man, a humble sushi chef from Japan, who infiltrated the inner sanctum, becoming the Dear Leader's cook, confidant, and court jester. What is life like serving Kim Jong-il and his heir? A strange and dangerous gig where the food and drink never stop, the girls are all virgins, and you're never really safe. We sent Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Adam Johnson to meet the man who survived all the craziness.

I remember that I saw the movie that this was based on, and I really enjoyed it.

Do you remember the name of it? I remember thinking it would make a good movie when I read it.

Just crazy. On one hand Im glad theyre giving you a challenge, but the cynical part of me wonders if its just padding. Also - wasnt this supposed to be set before the main story originally or something? I would have liked that better. The Makyr storyline did nothing for me.

This one hurt. I had to go outside for a half hour in the rain when I finished the first part to calm down enough to come back and finish it. Fucking hell.

Oh yeah. I had a very strong reaction as well.

What sticks with me even now is his willingness to forgive the juror outside the court house. That blows my mind. Maybe he was super swept up in the moment but I cant say I would have done the same. Also, the reactions and stubbornness of his family even now is very sad, but interesting to see.
