Final Fantasy III (DS)

This little dinosaur is one I've owned for many years, but never got more than halfway through. Now that I'm older, I am much more appreciative of it despite its archaic design. It's also much less difficult than I thought it would be. Like many classic jrpgs, doing side content and leveling up a bit diminishes the challenge. Happy I finally beat this and had actual fun with it. That's another older game crossed off of my huge backlog. :)

Ratchet: Gladiator HD (PS3)

Or "Deadlocked", if you will. Going through my PS3 backlog and that's another game beaten. Surprisingly, still super fun to play despite being entirely combat-focused. Still probably my least favorite because I still prefer the main games, and this one does get a little repetitive, but R&C's super smooth controls + the awesome weapons make any game fun. Single player was surprisingly long and meaty considering the kind of game it is and I love how you can just adjust the difficulty as you like, so anyone can get enjoyment out of it.

Next up might be Rayman Origins. Not sure yet.

Beyond Good & Evil HD (PS3)

So recently I made an inventory of my backlog in a word file and I had so many games left to beat. I categorised them in green (definitely want to play), yellow (might still play but not sure) and red (practically no interest in anymore). This one I put on the green list, so I decided to finally play it.

Yeah, I don't know how well I feel it holds up today. Controls were a bit awkward sometimes and especially the camera was just plain bad (could just be this version, I don't know). Story and characters are good and fun, but underdeveloped. Gameplay tries a lot of things, but never really expands upon what it introduces (combat, puzzles, stealth and vehicle control all kind of stagnate at some point). Stealth sections were really annoying sometimes. Still, I did enjoy a lot of it. I guess it's more than the sum of its parts, but even then, I feel like this game was definitely a game for 2003 more than it is a real timeless classic. For the 3 euros I paid for it, great investment though!

Bravely Default (3DS)

Borrowed it from my partner, as it was one of his favorite games ever and I just never got around to this game, even though I like JRPGs. I put a solid 80+ hours into it and had a lot of fun grinding out the job levels and mixing up stuff to see what works. One of the coolest things was having four Dark Knights one-rounding entire groups of bosses in the first turn of the battle later in the game. This game is meant to be broken and every option you have to do so is fun to figure out. Not to mention the quality of life stuff...controlling the encounter rate, what things you can gain and difficulty wherever you want whenever you want is very nice.

Not a bad story either, despite some weird inconsistencies and sometimes questionable execution, and surprisingly fun characters. I sometimes just laughed whenever Agns had that extremely dramatic voice acting during some of the dramatic moments. Yeah, really good and fun game overall, glad I played it in the end.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon Reignited (PS4)

Now finished with the entire trilogy. People weren't exaggerating when they said this one is filled with annoying minigames. The levels themselves are generally fine and there is a solid amount of variety, but the main part is over very quickly and then you have to do separate minigames again to complete them. Some of the levels are also designed awkwardly (Enchanted Towers, Lost Fleet etc.). I loved Crystal Islands though, and I did really like playing with the other characters as well.

Overall, I do think I like this one the least of the trilogy, but it's all within small margins. Probably 2>1>3, but all of them had good and bad things in the end. Mostly good, fortunately.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage Reignited (PS4)

This was a super quick one after Radiant Historia. I got pretty addicted to it and 100%'d it, just like I did with the first Spyro game (although it feels like you're meant to do that anyway). Really fun and chill game. I think these two are basically equal, Spyro 2 had a few more elements to it, but nothing spectacularly different. It was also slightly more annoying than the first one with some of the side stuff you had to do to get some of the orbs.

I might start 3 right after this and finish up the Reignited Trilogy, but I'm not sure yet.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS)

Just finished this game getting every single node and the true ending. Really awesome stuff, both the original ending and the PC ending are fine. I was pretty invested in this JRPG. Not sure, but I think the last JRPG I finished was Tales of Vesperia more than a year ago, and Radiant Historia was an amazing one to get back into them!

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation (3DS)

I didn't plan on beating this right afer Birthright AND Conquest, but I was kind of into Fates at thar point so I thought, why not keep going. Having all the characters was fun, but the story isn't any better than the other two and while it tries to have unique map gimmicks like Conquest, they never feel as good (or they're literally copied). But still, it's nice to have played all three paths and I have definitely warmed up to Fates by playing it a lot.

Switch is amazing, don't h@ just because it has Kirby games...

Oh, people will rate units very differently even based on unit viability. People will still give Marcus 1's and Nino 10's because of the level ups.

Lyn - her stats are pretty good, Mani Katti is good, but otherwise there's nothing particularly great about her.

Eliwood - mediocre stats, Rapier is weak, but lances and pony upon promotion are certainy helpful. Best promotion of the three.

Hector - strength and bulk, plus the very powerful Wolf Beil, make him a great boss killer. Axes aren't too inaccurate in FE7 so he does fine. Worst promotion though hurting him a bit late game with 5 move (boots are in high demand) and swords which really don't do anything for him, so the best lord easily but not perfect.

It had its moments, but overall I can't say I liked it that much. Enough to finish the game at least, but many parts were tedious, weirdly paced etc. It was better than XIII, but I feel like the problem is that in 2016 there were already plenty of better open world RPG's and XV really had that typical problem open world games often have in terms of how to tell and progress the story. It felt disjointed to me, and the gameplay wasn't good enough to compensate. Actually, I felt the game showed that the FF series was starting to lag behind in the world of games.

The setting and much of the soundtrack were great though, and at least you have choices to make unlike in XIII.

DMC2 is by far the best one.

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest (3DS)

Another Fates path down. Don't know if you count these as different games, but w/e. Conquest is much better than Birthright. Its story is still Fates level, pretty absurd, lots of illogical choices and joke characters, but despite that I found it more engaging than Birthright's because it's actually something different (BR was super generic). And the maps were mostly fantastic, some of the gimmicks were incredibly fun to strategise around. Chapter 10, chapter 20 and chapter 24 were among my favorites. After 24 I found it dip a little bit, but at least it has still got the challenge. CQ is probably the best 3DS Fire Emblem game, although I have a huge soft spot for Echoes.

I will actually play Revelation as well, but maybe not right away.

What happens to the year 0-1 if you count back decades? 0 is the starting point when counting years: 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, 8-9, 9-10. That's ten years. So how can the year 2000-2001 be the end of a decade rather than the start of one?
