It determines where the power to the wheels comes from. FWD the power is on the front. Its best for casual city driving because the back end gets pulled along by the front. Since there's no power at the rear, the lightest part of the vehicle can't change the handling characteristics. RWD is when its on the back. Race vehicles are typically RWD, as are some labor-market vehicles (like large pickups). It typically results in oversteer because the rear wheels are what push the car around the turn, meaning all the momentum comes from behind the motor. AWD is where power goes to all the wheels at once. Offroad vehicles are equipped with AWD.
