MGSV: Phantom Pain.

An experiment in open world mechanics in the form of a series grand finale which had established itself as a linear, story driven franchise, which proceeded to offer an uneven and terribly paced narrative with limited dialogue to make way for padded repeat missions on maps with 70% empty and useless landscapes and an unfinished ending that messes with established lore and character relationships all for the sake of being "meta".

Metal Gear Solid is my favorite game series so for it to end like this, the disappointed was indescribable. They clearly had no clue about how to do open world effectively and should have finished the series off doing what they knew best. No amount of gameplay options can save the flaws this game has as a series finale. The shit that went down behind the scenes is no surprise with what they were producing.

sienfelds whole schtick is that it's meant to be bland

it's a show about nothing

But the way they execute the "nothing" is anything but. Also the character of Kramer is the opposite of bland and generic.

The film is an interesting one. For me as a big fan of James's work, not just AVGN, the quality of it wasn't as important as the journey. He made a film that was way too over ambitious for a filmmaker of his level and that was the whole point. He had an opportunity to live out a dream of his that he would probably have never had another opportunity to do being the niche internet personality that he is.

In that sense, the actual making of the film was a lot more interesting and I think whether the film was objectively the best thing ever, worst thing ever or something in between, it didn't matter as much as seeing him create the B-movie he always wanted to with all the filmmaking techniques and ideas he had talked about over the years that he liked and appreciated coming to fruition on a large scale and then being able to actually premiere it in theaters.

It was a great journey and one of the best things he included on the home media release other than the awesome making of featurettes was a live audience reaction track from the premiere because it demonstrates why it was all worth it. I think showing it in theaters and getting to hear and see those reactions to his work meant more to him than whatever people thought of the film overall. Is it flawed? Yes. Does it have some good stuff? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Just depends what you as a fan take away from it. For me after years of following his work it was something that I appreciated for the effort he put in as a filmmaker. That's how I'll always view this film which is a unique circumstance. Creation over content.

It was huge when it came out, but he's got a point. The hype for Avatar dropped off a cliff.

I mean, it might... but Avatar came and went. It was cool to look at, but that's about it. I can't see the sequel doing as well, because the novelty just won't be there anymore.

Even if they don't do as well as the record breaker of the original, it's highly unlikely any of them will outright flop and being that they're all being filmed together, they're all gonna get released regardless.

It's weird to me that some people seem to have the mindset that if these films weren't to break 1b they would automatically determine them to be failures like they need to surpass the original to be successful and worth anything.
