Appreciate what you have and what you've done to get there. Paying attention to the success of celebrities isn't on par with reality.

people will hate me for saying this...but i literally dont let anything cap my ceiling. i've dated literal playboy models because of the belief i can do anything and knowing how to get myself there...but for my career i somehow don't live by the same philosophy. but i guess i can view my career as a means of otherwise living that life (gives me money to travel, vacation time, etc)

What? These are scripted TV shows. Comparing yourself to others is bad enough, but why are you comparing yourself to works of fiction? Don't do that.

This sounds like the bigger problem. Most content people just view their job as just the thing they do to make money, and find the enjoyment in life outside of that. People want to make a lot of money, but almost everyone don't really lead inherintly exciting professions.

you're telling me there aren't people out there who live lives similar to on tv shows? that there isn't a billionaire out there like axe? i find that hard to believe. they may be in the 0.01% but i do believe they exist. and i always do strive to be at the top...

we have an opening and he kept badgering me about helping him find someone to hire. around the same time a friend asked me about opportunities for a lateral transfer into my group. so i of course told him about the opening. my boss kept badgering me about finding him someone so i eventually told him i did. my boss cut the interview list down to a nice even 5 candidates, including my friend. then the next time we talked he cut it down to 4 candidates before interviews have started...with my guy being the casualty. why would he do that lol ?_?

(that also pays them A LOT of money)

i have 3 degrees in engineering, which i kinda got roped into. i graduated in the era of escalating degrees, whereas originally you only needed a BS degree to work in my field. but poor economy led to massive competition and before you knew it i was getting additional degrees just to keep up with the competition. for comparison, my dad did a similar job to me with only his bachelors. for another comparison, about half the people in my field have the same pedigree i do (and i'd estimate about 70% of the people my age, ie who graduated in my era)

but i scraped and clawed and got internships to slowly work my way up the ladder. i do have good success, making 6 figures, have a secure job (i can't get fired unless i really fuck up...those union lawyers are really good), amazing benefits, and i only do an average of 2 hours of work a day.

while the work is interesting enough (definitely not boring), i'd hardly call it my true passion. but watching tv shows about lawyers who work consumes their life and they love it, or shows like billions where people make billions doing what looks like fun stuff, or seeing taylor swift getting paid for her creativity...it does make me low key jealous. i wasn't raised to have passions, hobbies, etc...in fact it was flat out disallowed

so sometimes i wonder what it would be like to live a life like that...but since i don't have any passions whatsoever, i guess this will do

premium dining is the obvious answer.
that and doordash/grubhub has high delivery fees if he used those.

I live downtown so I just place the order online and pick it up myself. Maybe food is just expensive in my area? Not eating fast food, so its stuff like thai, burgers, pasta etc. I always add extra/premium meats (seafood) so that adds to the cost

I don't remember exactly how much they were, but I have several tailored three-piece suits that were each well over a grand.

"Tailored" is just a buzz word. Did they adjust an off the rack suit to your body? If so, you overpaid. Did they take custom measurements and make the suit? If so, maybe an appropriate pay (but probably not). Did they create multiple versions and recreate it from scratch each time to fit your body perfectly? If so, then probably a decent price

But yes, a lot of clothes cost more when made in USA (ie no cheap sweatshop labor)

Why pay four digits (or even three) for a suit I've worn maybe four times?
I'm all out of grandparents anyway, and interviewers only care that you bothered to wear any suit at all.

Because a poor fitting suit, one that looks off or isn't comfortable makes you project less confidence and attention to details. Interviewers and others do notice those things, if only subconciously. I don't leave any advantage on the table i can have over the average Joe

Three digits (3-400+tailoring) is enough to get that, if you go into 4 digits, you're getting advanced materials, custom measurements and full canvas...all luxuries which most people don't need and 0.001% of people notice.

If you can't drop 400 on a good suit, I get it...but I'd suggest doing it once it's remotely feasible. When you're in a suit is when you should need to look your absolute best, so might as well do it right.
