There are two buzz moments I've found when writing (I have an extremely addictive personality so I always try to find productive buzzes hah)

  1. The feeling of creating a new sentence
  2. The feeling of crafting it into the perfect sentence
Funny enough, (1) works better for me at night. (2) is better in the morning. Difference between drafting and editing I guess but I can't seem to get motivated at night anymore. Been waking up before everyone else to get early morning editing done. Can't wait to go back to drafting on a new project

nice man, research and thought like that will show in the writing.

i had an idea about a new magic system which i think lends itself to pretty interesting conflict

the magic you use depends on the type of alcohol you drink (there can be some hand wavy explanation as to how the alcohol mixes and yada yada).

and the strength of magic depends on how much is in your system

so most people would die of alcohol poisoning if they over did it...so there's an auto nerf built in

but some people don't get drunk or whatever and can be super powerful

seems pretty intriguing, but i think it can stand to be expanded on a bit. you're well under the suggested wordcount range for queries, so you have quite a bit of leeway. in fact, i think if it's too short then agents might get the impression that you haven't put enough thought or detail into it. dunno really, probably depends on the agent, but either way, i would say the personal stakes for the main character and why he gets involved in this adventure could be imparted a bit more clearly. and maybe more detail about what the cult's nefarious plans are, and what might happen if the protagonist doesn't stop them.

hope you didn't think i left you hanging, i meant to get to this earlier but i've been on a forced sabbatical from gamefaqs the past couple days lol.... someone apparently thought my hot take on an aspect of the NFL was a bit too spicy. anyway, i'm gonna dredge up proto-blurb/query in a bit and give it a once over and post it in case you or anyone wants to critique it or give their thoughts on it.

Thx for feedback. There are a lot of conflicting ideas about how to write a query and I was trying to showcase my writing style. As a thriller, its short, quick paced, and to the point. But motivation should be something to add in.

Looking at your protoquery, it is definitely more wordy than mine, but that might be your writing style and its probably good to try and match with the manuscript for obvious reasons. Give them a taste of whats to come.

I do also have a synopsis which is gonna be a play by play of the entire story, spoilers and all. I figured the natural progression was query -> if interested, sample chapters --> if still interested, read synopsis to make sure payoff is worth it -> request for full

but every agent has their own ways im sure

Then do a read through. If it's where I want, I'll start writing my synopsis. If not, then we'll do another rewrite.

I haven't been able to write anything in the story I'm working on for about a month now, I got to around 12,000 words and just hit a wall. It's annoying because I know where I want things to go but I've had a real weird writing style throughout and all that's coming to mind is very direct and brief. I don't want it to feel like a story written by multiple people but that's how my mind feels sometimes. For now I'm keeping my mind occupied by trying to write reviews of every comic/manga/novel and film I watch.

I would say just keep writing, even if the style or prose sucks and you're just telling. Then you can always go back in revision and fill it out.

What is it they say...the first draft is you telling yourself the story. The revision is you telling others the story.

Here's my query body so far

Dear [name],
I am currently seeking representation for my debut novel, OUTBOUND, an adventure thriller of 80,000 words.

Ben Lyon (22) is fed up with his job at a call center in Southern California. He decides to quit and dials what he thinks will be his last call, and hears something that will change his life forever: the murder of a stranger. He heads home believing it to be a prank until his roommate convinces him to investigate further.

With the help of two treasure hunters and a billionaire financier, the investigation launches them on a globetrotting adventure to locate the tomb of a powerful Emperor. But Bens treacherous past will come back to haunt him, and he will have to learn to overcome his inner demons if he wants to survive the journey. A cult-like group called The Society of Shaman lurk around every corner, determined to find the tomb first, and use its secrets for their own nefarious plans.

It's okay but needs tightening up.

What I've found, I think, is that actual readers of an actual full book are quite patient, and know that novels sometimes take some time to get going. The people who tend to be brutally merciless with their attention spans are the ones reading those endless supplies of chapter 1s over on the many reddit writing subs. I feel like that's a huge thing that sits in their heads when in critique mode.

True, and even truer in genre fiction where some setup may be an expectation (fantasy).

I think I'm speaking more towards commercial fiction where you need to convince a lit agent (who does read through endless supplies of chapter 1s) to represent you. And also, I guess I'm attempting to write with more broad appeal, knowing I wont satisfy the heavy genre readers, but maybe someone who wants a bubble gum book to read on a plane haha.

Older fantasy novels definitely took longer to get going, but the prose itself doesn't seem different to modern prose to me.

it may be a genre thing

i really notice it when reading out loud because ill stumble on my words...because there will be an extra "the" or "of" or something like that

where new (last 20 years) thrillers seem to have much more economy of words.

but yeah pace has improved a lot

It's pretty crazy how writing style has changed

reading book 1 of WoT and when I read, I'm reading out loud to my wife.

We've basically stuck to more modern prose which I've gotten used to, but WoT prose trips me up quite a bit.

much of that is genre specific (Mostly reading thrillers and fantasy is a tad more wordy) but books seem to get going a lot quicker than WoT did. Not that I didn't enjoy the beginning setup (I'm only on chapter 10 so obviously haven't gotten into anywhere near the meat of a 14 book series haha)
