| Topic | Just watched Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus for the 1st time |
| Rharyx211 04/04/23 4:09:58 PM #11 | Now that I'm not hungover, lemme write up my thoughts. So first of all, prior to watching I thought Ledger was playing Doctor Parnassus, and after his passing they rewrote his character to be like Doctor Who and had him mystically switching between bodies whenever he shows up. And I thought his imaginarium was a Willy Wonky-like real life location where people visited and wacky fanciful stuff happened to them. So I was very surprised by how none of that was the case lol (besides, the wacky stuff happening in the imaginarium). I also had no idea Andrew Garfield was in this movie. Acting was great, and Christopher Plummer is amazing. He should've been Dumbledore instead of Michael Gambon, if I'm being honest. I also never noticed how similar Ledger and Depp looked, it was pretty uncanny. Loved how the imagination landscapes looked. I'm a sucker for bizarre dream-like settings like that. Like, the CGI is of course not as sophistocated as stuff we have today, but I think that adds to the appeal as it makes the worlds look "off." But also, I like how it showcases that iffy CGI can be easily looked past if you already have a good story/writing -- something Marvel needs to realize. Kinda lukewarm on the ending, like I didn't really get it? Was that the same Anton and Valentina, or replacements who looked like them that Mr. Nick brought about somehow? I guess Parnassus learned to stop making deals with Mr. Nick by the end, so that was his "arc," but I feel like he still just kept getting swindled the whole movie and there was never really like any satisfying payoff to his deals. Maybe that was the point, though. I do like how they never really explain Percy's deal. Him just randomly being immortal as well and always finding Parnassus is a neat character trait, and not everything in stories needs to be explained so I'm glad they didn't waste time expounding on details like that. Overall, really good. Probably a movie I'll watch again at some time, because the ideas were really creative and the story was really engaging to watch unfold, but I feel like I'm missing something with the ending. 10% IPAs can do that to you, though. --- Watch "Final Fantasy XV Abridged" and "Kingdom Hearts Abridged" right here! https://www.youtube.com/user/mcknett3 |

The arc reactor was what was keeping him alive (the shrapnel in place), but with Extremis, they just removed the shrapnel and regenerated the parts of him that had been damaged. Before this, removing the arc reactor would've just killed him outright. I *think* this tech is what led to the stuff they used in Age of Ultron to restore tissue on Hawkeye and stuff? IM2 understood Tony was the main character and gave him a character arc where he faced his problems and had the agency to solve them and grow as a person/hero. They need to keep coming up with contrivances in the writing to get what the writers want done, done. Even with Blake and Yang's confession here, they had to be separated into a "you better confess dimension" instead of having things play out a bit more organically.
