Just another point to make: your proposed solution can also be perceived as one made with good intentions (and I have no doubt that it is), but again, the issue is that it has not yet been proven to make schools safer--or if it has, I haven't seen any research to that effect (and if you have, I'd honestly like to read it). Saying that it's common sense shouldn't really be the level of analysis for a public policy that can affect millions of people's livelihoods.

Deciding how many layers of clothes to wear on a snowy day? Use your common sense. Deciding how to allocate public funding to ensure the safety of our citizens? Yeah, we should definitely use more investigative methods to make sure we're on the right path.

Yeah, that's why they are criminals. They chose to break laws. People try to assault others so we have laws in place. We create laws to govern the society in the ways we should see fit to protect it.

I'll at least agree with you that people are the problem, because this country has a cultural issue with gun violence and firearm access (and health care access and education access and criminal justice reform...) that it is too stubborn to fully address.

I want to take a moment to state that I don't want to sound condescending--we need to be having these discussions as Americans in an earnest, good-faith approach. I'd hope we have the same priorities of public health and safety, albeit differing in how to maintain such things in our society.

But for me, freedom does not look like young students being patted down before they can go to school to learn, or to be watched over by armed police while in classrooms or in hallways. I think we can work together to find practical remedies that don't compromise our daily interactions with public institutions.

Kids wouldn't get shot if there were people paid to protect them. It's the ultimate deterant. Make guns illegal people will find a way to get them illegally. The hypocrisy is hilarious. You want kids to not get shot but you're opposed to having the protected.

do you realize that a lot of schools have a police officer assigned to them already? and this particular school in florida had an armed guard? it didn't deter anything.

Well I hope he gets fired. If he were checking every person that entered the building as I proposed then it wouldn't of happened.

that's just not even feasible. you want one person to search hundreds if not thousands of students before they can enter? how much longer do you want to make the school day? and again how do you want to fund this endeavor?

I said at least two, so there would be multiple people doing checks. This is a norm in many countries.

Which countries?

How is that even reasonable?

I had to go through a metal detector guarded by 2 armed deputies to get my marriage license. How many times a year does the office of marriage licenses get shot up?

But to do the same for schools is unreasonable?

Do you envision every single public school in a district receiving the same level of security? How many marriage license offices are in one county, compared to the number of total public schools?
