TopicWas Christopher Columbus stupid for reaching America and thinking it was India?
Norman_Smiley

I don't get where this idea that Columbus thought the world was smaller than it was is coming from.

What Columbus got wrong was accepting really flawed primary source materials, such as Marco Polo. Using the data from Marco Polo and other travelers, he came to the conclusion that China was not that far off the coast of Spain.

Bio1590 posted...
There's a reason an Italian/Genoan basically had to shop himself around until he finally found someone willing to sponsor it in Spain, who only did so because they were that desperate to obtain a W.

WTF are you talking about? Spain just came off a massive W with the Reconquista, which literally ended with Granada capitulating on January 2, 1492. They were the spearhead of Christiandom, driving the Moors off the Iberian Peninsula for good. This was 18 years after Isabella and Ferdinand unified Castille and Aragon making the defacto Spain. What Spain was now desperate to do is find new trading opportunities and they had missed out on the atlantic island discoveries as they were busy conquering land on the home front for the time being.

I'm only through episode 5 or so of season 3. So thoughts could change towards end of the season.

Kyler, Tori, Hawk, Robbie are worst with Kyler first, based on what we know so far.

Kyler is just straight up an asshole. He seems irredeemable. But we don't know his story yet.

Tori is angry and violent but at least has some people she cares for, truly. Of all the kids, she is probably the one most in need of Miyagi, not just Miyagi-do and is the closest to how Daniel was in the original, just taken a step further and with more competence.

Hawk is continuing to prove that he can't handle power or status again and again. He is still new to it though. Still has a chance.

Robbie we are supposed to believe has a good heart but through his life has learned to not trust anyone. He is just needs the realization that he can't just cut bait immediately, that trust is a leap of faith, etc., and forgiveness.

Nearest I can tell, abstract art is an artists medium. Meaning it makes sense to people that have training and experience in painting / creating art. A lot of painting is creating a bit of a visual trick. Abstract art is taking away as much as the visual trick as possible, only including the bare minimum shape and colors.

at least that is my opinion as someone who paints with Bob Ross and has taken 1 art class ever.

The Apostle Paul was a double agent sent by Satan to undermine early Christianity, pull all the love from it and replace it with judging and legalism.

His story about conversion on the road to Damascus is an outright lie. Jesus' message was always to love God first and to love your neighbor like yourself. Paul's message was about sexual morality and tithing and creating a behemoth of a church.

In Acts 18:8-9, Paul is rejected by the church of Ephesus.
In Revelations 2:1-3, the church of Ephesus is praised by the writer of Revelations for rejecting a false apostle. No other apostle is mentioned to be rejected by Ephesus in the bible. Later in chapter 2 when the writer also lauds them for their hate of Nicolaitans' practices, that is not just a continuation of the praise from before, that is a wholly separate reason they are praised. Two heretics they shut down.
Now this is interesting. If you have anymore to add I would be very interested in hearing it.

Ultimately I think Christians have to ask themselves, did Jesus not finish the work he was sent to do on Earth? Did he leave an incomplete message? If he did everything he was sent to do and said everything that needed to be said, why would there be theological differences between him and his apostles?

So, differences in theology:
Jesus preached the gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven, Paul preached the gospel of the Grace of God.

Basically that means Jesus preached an earthly Kingdom of God. The time and place of the events that happened and the history of the peoples living there is important to have in context. Jesus' preaching took place ~100 years after Jerusalem was conquered by Rome. Before that like 100 years of Seleucids rule, before that 100 years of Ptolmaic rule, before that 200 years of Persian rule, before that 200 years of Babylonian rule, and before that a few centuries of self governance. (numbers all rough remembering, could be off by a few hundred years or forgot a conquering power). The Romans were a bit different. Under the other rules they had a large degree of autonomy as a people. Under the Romans, there wasn't the same sense of autonomy. The message of an earthly kingdom where their king has full authority over his people would ring very true to the audience that Jesus was primarily preaching to, fellow Jews.

Paul preached the gospel of grace and his Kingdom of Heaven was the heavenly, spiritual world we typically think of. His message wasn't especially popular with many of the Jews, which is why, IMO, he said that Jesus' message was grace for all, through him. Jesus' original message of an earthly kingdom wouldn't have resonated the same with the gentile population. But eternal life in a heavenly place? That could work for everyone.

Jesus followed the law of Moses, and did not oppose or reject any law. Matthew 5:17-20 is quite clear that Jesus isn't overwriting any laws. What he did is hate how in some cases adherence to the law led to bad behavior and hypocrites. Jesus' true disciples continued to follow Mosaic law even after Jesus' death.

Paul followed the law of grace. So long as you believe in Jesus, even if you do bad things, you can still go to heaven. He rejected the existing law. Again, this is really important if you want to grow the organization, as it is very difficult to get people to circumcise themselves as adults out of free will. But if you say they can keep their foreskins and eating shellfish and pigs, suddenly quite a few more people will be open to your message of eternal life.

Finally (well, not really I can go on, but of the point of this post), Jesus gave the church to Simon, called Peter. That call out is needed, because Jesus renamed Simon to Peter, as he will be the rock on which he builds the church, and later hands the keys of the kingdom to. Paul renamed himself and rebukes Peter in Gal. 2:11-13, questioning the man given authority by Jesus. Additionally, the rebuke was towards someone trying to a that time uphold the law, albeit maybe incorrectly, by another, who felt that law should no longer exist. This is just hypocritical legalism on a convenient subject for Paul.

So yeah, I think if you look at the theology, authority, and audience, it is clear that following Jesus is different than being a Christian that follows Paul's teaching, which taught us among other wonderful things like wives submit to your husbands, and that women can't teach men and need to shut up in church.

It will probably take me 2 months to finish the engine swap, then I'll list it for $6500, accepting first $5k I'm offered.

what's scrapping a car? first time I heard that?

1) Buy a really cheap car. Normally totaled, sometimes major component failure.

2) Disassemble the car. Part prices are normally a combination of condition, color, and if there is anything unique about it. Example, a Natural White 4runner hood might go for $300 in excellent condition. A Glacier Metallic hood with a hood scoop in excellent condition would probably be closer to $800. Any of the rarer colors, my friend has multiple customers signed up to get that door in the color they need or whatever. You could also make people take the parts themselves, but you will get less money and it will take longer to part out the car.

3) List the car locally (craigslist and facebook) and on enthusiasts boards with pics, and as much detail as possible.

4) Not every part sells. At some point you've got to cut losses and recycle the rest. I'd guess my buddy recycles 75-90% of the shocks and springs, 95% of radiators [often radiators are a good money maker, not the case on this particular vehicle though).

5) You need time and space for this to work. And it works best once you become a bit established in the enthusiasts community.

There are tons of cars that this works for, but there is an element of localization to it. Like in Washington there are a few people that do this for Saabs. Not sure that market would exist elsewhere.

In general, I would say just about any truck or SUV made by an american or japanese brand is a good candidate for this. older japanese commuter cars with an enthusiast base (80s and 90s civics, CRX, accords, preludes to a slightly lesser extent), pretty much anything v8 RWD that is not a luxury car, Volvo's have a huge diehard community. BMW 3 series and some 5 series are good, I would probably avoid 7 series, whereas I would consider Mercedes S-class. Mini's are starting to look like a possibility. Subaru's are good across the board.

Exception to this would be if you have an employer sponsored retirement plan which includes a matching %, it is wiser to hit that matching % before paying of credit card debt, in most cases.

E.g. you if you put in 8% employer matches 4%. Do that before taking that 8% to pay off your debt, because unless you have usury levels of interest, that matching 50% of your investment is greater than the credit card debt, which is like 14-30% interest cost.

Start scrapping a type of car. It should be one at least 20 years old but still popular. Older Toyota SUVs and trucks are great, as even the frame left over at the end has value beyond just recycle value. I've got a friend that scraps out 3rd gen 4runners and 1st gen Tacoma's. He buys ones that are totaled or engine / trans blew up and owner doesn't want to repair it. Average purchase is $1k-3k a piece. Scrapped out each rig is $6-12k. Normally takes him 1 month to recoup the cost, but 3-4 years on average to sell the entire vehicle. He's got 20 acres and a giant shop full of parts.
