Great episode! Yeah, I've always thought that we as a community greatly underappreciate how much effort and love SBAllen has poured into these contests. It shows to me that Allen pours a LOT of thought into designing each contest and I'm going to use the Show topic to give him some major kudos:

The Years contest was really bad for match pictures, especially Allen asking for Age of Empires pictures. My concern with a Console contest is that the match pictures could be handled similarly to the Years contest, where we have a slideshow of the notable games released on the console (with more of a bias towards the console exclusives). That would make a Console contest very picture dependent, where match pictures could determine who wins or loses a match.

Ehh, I'm not too worried about this. I do agree pictures were a big deal for Years, since the average voter probably only knows one or two game releases per year off the top of their head... but everyone's well aware what the big games for the PS2 and N64 and 360 were, so I don't think the pics will swing percentages too much. It could for the lesser known systems, but those aren't going to be contending for wins regardless.

Yeah, I meant to mention there would be an issue with recent console generations because you'd have to make the call about whether to restrict games to console exclusives, in which case something like the Xbone would be, well, boned. Or even the Xbox 360 since most of its big non-Halo/Gears of War games aren't exclusive anymore.

I think we should say anything that was exclusive at launch is fair game. It's true though, the Wars have been way watered down with how nothing's exclusive for long anymore (except Nintendo).

KP hits the other problem, in that 32 entrants in just about any contest these days is just not going to have enough permutations to be a viable competition. You'd either have to hope for a viable upset to break everyone's brackets, or you'd have to resort to an all Oracle contest in the vein of second chance, which doesn't sound very enticiting to anyone but the fraction of Board 8ers that already do the Oracle challenge.

Well, we do have the tiebreaker. Maybe we could expand it with a "lite version" of the Oracle, for instance with the last three matches of the bracket there's a slider where you pick the winner to score in the 50-52 range, 52-55, 55-60, or else over 60.

My thoughts on All Fictional would be to do a 128 character contest, designate 16 spots to all fictional characters, using the cream of the crop only, and have them evenly dispersed across the bracket, with each division having two outsiders, one on each side.

If that's a concern for SB then I'd be fine with setting a cap of 16 or 32, as long as they were all mixed in with the traditional characters.

Maybe that could be the Anniversary hook? We bring back the Sweet 16 from 2002, add in the best 16 non-traditional entrants, plus 16 never before seen traditional characters (newcomers since 2018 mostly), and everyone else is seeded through the normal nomination process.

Best music track contest

I pushed for this in the 2018 wrapup episode and it didn't get any traction. Too many concerns with licensing (are they youtube links? what happens when one of them gets pulled down mid-match?) and people not taking the time to listen to both and just voting for Hyrule Theme because they recognize it.

You could probably do a 30 hour podcast of pre/post show COVID talk

I'm sure I could get over 10 hours of content if I stitched everything together. But sorry, it will never happen- those sessions were for pure venting on my part, not public consumption!

That being said I might consider some Bonus Content on other subjects, for instance our nostalgic movies/Star Wars takedown was pretty good, I thought.

Really strong bracket, I think this does a great job showing the potential for this idea (as long as Zelda is removed)!

I agree Mario should be the favorite under this scenario, but surprised at the sweep... I think there would be plenty of Pokemon and Final Fantasy pickers sitewide.

Well, I'll agree in that All Fictional poses a unique challenge when it comes to the nomination database, if we want to do things properly... but it should still be doable. My recommendation would be

• initially seed it with all characters who have made it into an official match
• give B8 a couple days to come up with 32 new characters since 2018 that would be worthy of consideration, add them to the db
• also give us a couple days to pick 32 non-traditional new characters to consider, and put them in there as well
• if anything we forgot gets a rally behind it in the opening week, throw them into the dropdown list as well

I think it would be fine for us to assist like this, without making anyone ineligible for prizes. It would be similar to how we've assisted in the past, like picking characters in 2002 (okay that was Current Events because we didn't exist yet, but same idea) or swapping out games in 2009 (that was the year we did that, right?).

Otherwise someone like me or TRE could take over managing the database, at the cost of going ineligible for prizes. I'm sure we'd both do so without hesitation if SB asked.

Yeah now that you mention it, a mini "Contest" for characters in 2021 could be a fun way to lead into the big All Fictional Character battle of 2022.

A console contest seems pretty terminally uninteresting to me. Like with Years, I just don't have an emotional attachment the same way I do with games or characters.

It's fine to feel that way personally, but remember, we've had over two decades of Console Wars ever since playgrounds in the 90s. WARS, I tell you! Even with our userbase having mellowed out, I still think things would get heated in a way they never did (or would have) during the Years mini-bracket.

We've got to give Games a two year cooldown period IMO, so I'd vote for

2021 - Best. System. Ever.
(mini Contest with only 32 entrants, set up Nintendo versus Sony classes in each division)

2022 - Best Video Game Character Ever
(20 year anniversary of the original, but lifting the old restriction to allow all characters who have had a meaningful presence in games. as in, Goku and Batman and Donatello and James Bond are allowed into the bracket, if they get enough nomination support)

2023 - Best Game of the 90s
(Ocarina battles the bracket winner at the end)

2024 - Best Series Ever II
(Zelda battles the bracket winner at the end)

2025 - Game of the Century
(128 games from 2000 to 2025, winner battles Majora's Mask, winner of that plays Breath of the Wild)

Obviously I was feeling more confident at the start of the last set of matches than the end... but for the record, despite the 11% swing in Skyrim's favor over the course of that 24 hours, I still like Dark Souls tonight!

(For reasons I already touched on in the episode, but- people are taking the GotD tag more seriously so despite Pokemon being the strongest SERIES, people started abandoning it in droves... and the rise of Last of Us was from the most tuned-in voters anti-voting the leaks in the early going while the more casual voters haven't heard about them or don't care and supported it for its good reputation.)

Yeah, I do believe in Witcher 3 as a symbol, and agree things will be trending in its favor by the time the Final arrives (tying back to yo's Living, Breathing Contest theory we discussed at length). Even so, I still think it will take a perfect storm to slay Zelda.
