Well yes there wouldn't be much drama for the Champ in 2017 (unless Mario's amazing), but I'd still like to see how the other 12 matches would shake out and be able to make x-stats based on what holds up to Zelda the best.

And I bet there will be plenty of debate over what takes first in 2018 so it would be nice to switch to the 1v1 system permanently so we'd get to see that IMO.

WOW the 2017 Game of the Year situation is already HEATING UP. Based on today's poll it looks like our mini tournament should include

Breath of the Wild
Persona 5
Horizon: Zero Dawn
NieR: Automata
Resident Evil 7

And I'm sure 3 more great games will come out in the back half of the year. But will eleven more worthy games be released between now and then? It's certainly possible but that's why my initial push was to get us to at least a bracket of 8.

It's a good schedule overall, my only friend going this year will be doing the MK64 run which is neat. But the week-ending show stopper is... a 4 hour Earthbound run, really? It's like they don't even WANT Nick's undying viewership.

Oh good point greatone, I forgot to mention his very strong overall bracket placement in my "good start" section, but that's definitely worth a +1 by itself on the ol' Ng Scale. Obviously there are a couple entrants that got a raw deal (like say 2004), but otherwise we couldn't complain.

I'll give him a 7 overall for this season.

- not the most exciting idea for a Contest but it was original, we didn't know what kind of results to expect (aside from 1997 to 2001 obviously being very strong), and running this as a way to have a small old fashioned GameFAQs-decided bracket that wouldn't cause him a headache like 2015 and 2013 did was a smart plan on his part

- he gets points for a strong start; really generous prize pool, a personal topic to let B8 get their brackets in early, good job listing notable games/consoles for all the years. obviously some were missing but that was okay because he gave us a topic to post suggestions which he promised to check and get back to us on, and also started collecting Yearly Bios which would have been great

- but then he loses points for saying nothing for the next month, never adding notable games to the bracket or responding in the topic, scrapping the Bios instead of finding a place for them outside of the front page

- gains a few points back for a strong final week where he posted on the board, responded to Contest tickets, gave us a bonus poll, joked about Undertale and Draven, and unleashed the picsmiths for the user-created pics (despite making a couple questionable choices on which to use)

Which comes to a 7/10 as I said above. If he would like further feedback, I wrote up the few things I would have done differently here:

I think people might be more likely to vote OoT in that poll since that game is stronger and likely to play a bigger role in making 1998 the overall winner of the contest.

That's true, going with our "smart voters" theory would imply they took time to consider the question and vote for the game they assume GameFAQs loves the most rather than just their personal favorite, in which case of course Zelda gets a boost.

Ngamer, with those stats I provided comparing the popularity of each contest to the regular polls, I specifically ignored matches with extreme levels of rallying (more than 20% of the total votes coming from outside GameFAQs).

Alright I missed the line about rallies before I brought up the subject on air. That's a sensible way to do it and it makes BYiG look way better; voters actually cared about it MORE than a recent (and very good as far as B8 was concerned) Character Contest, before outside voters got involved.

- yeah if SB anoints me head of the Contest Committee it'll be all handhelds plus Classic PC Gaming (start to 1999) and Modern PC Gaming (2000 to present) to fill out the 32 spots

- 64 and 32 strike me as a bit much for GotY because as I talked about on air I don't think the average GameFAQs user gets through as many new games in a year as they might have 15 years ago. to me 16 games would be ideal, but 8 would be the easiest sell to SB so I used that number for my example

- ranking Contests based on how many close/entertaining/come from behind matches they have is certainly fair, and I won't deny that outside rallies CAN result in more of those (as with FF7/trainers). the problem at least for me is that these days it's all or nothing- either an outside force really cares and it's just Contest Over because they have 100x our userbase (which makes all further results for that entrant NOT close/entertaining) or they don't care at all and GameFAQs continues to have its way. I can enjoy brackets that go in either direction; hopefully lots of people do care about 128 All Fictional and things get crazy, but I'm also cool with smaller things that GameFAQs would probably get to decide itself like years or systems or VG music

I think I'd always go Nintendo in this bracket except for the PS2, PSX against some things, maybe the Xbox 360 could knock off like the 3DS... and obviously the Virtual Boy is the exception to the rule.

I'd say the DS is at the top of the handheld totem pole but even so the NES has enough nostalgia to barely edge it. (Imagine Mario 3 in the match pic, what does the DS counter with?)

Adding 8 pics for year for round 2 would have been way too much, considering there was way less than a dozen of us submitting pics.

I'll defer to you on this subject as you were certainly watching it more closely than me, HOWEVER don't you think part of the pressure was how the picture form only went up a couple days before R3 so you smiths were always struggling to stay ahead of the curve? Maybe if the form went up a good week+ before R2 started you'd have had time to coordinate your efforts and ensure good representation throughout. Also it would have only been 1 match a day for that round so you wouldn't have been as rushed as you would have been this year if it started a round earlier.

I know in my heart of hearts SB is interested in B8's reaction and will read this topic so here is (in a very respectful and appreciative manner) the few things I would recommend if we ever to do a mini-Contest along these lines again. Also many of them apply to any future Contest. After this I promise to put this subject to bed and stop bringing it up every other minute.

* promotion - large colorful banner on the front page announcing the Contest during the bracket-making period and mentioning the size of the prize pool, yellow site alerts for logged in members who haven't filled a bracket yet in the last 3 days before it locks (but with an X they can click to never see it again), a PotD the day before lockdown saying the Contest starts tomorrow have you got you bracket in yet

* bios - there wasn't room for them on the front page and that's understandable, but screen real estate shouldn't be a concern on the voting page- everyone there clearly cares about the bracket and wants more info or they wouldn't have just voted. also the bios B8 sent in were sometimes too long or too varied in tone- I wish we could have edited them down to a standard length and tone and had them listed or at least linked in from underneath the results, like we did for the Character Bios pages in 2013

* depth - the ? was a nice touch but I'd have prefered to keep the mouseover effect from the Vote In Polls in order to make the Notable Games/Console Releases info more visible without taking up any additional space on the page. I also wish we could have had all the games of note we mentioned in the original topic on the subject added to these boxes (including on the bracket creation page while that was still open)

* Round One pics - I think box shots of 4 games per and scrolling through the options was a good choice for R1, just would have liked to seen all "anchor games" locked in to either of the top two spots across the board. if you needed help determining what games deserved the anchor designation we'd have been happy to assist

* Round Two and on pics - I'd rather have seen R2 be the start of 1 match per day (would only have added 4 days) and it also be the switch to 8 games scrolling w/ B8 submitted pictures. that would have been extra work for us but we would have been up for the challenge. again, anchors being in the top 2 slots was needed (I think this happened regardless so good job) but I wish the #8 slot could have been given to consoles if there was a significant release. if consoles weren't supposed to factor in this season, that's totally fine, but then they shouldn't have been supported from the start (listed in the notable area for the bracket, available to have art submissions)

* games getting missed - sometimes there were other games in place of KH2 or Goldeneye or MMX or Earthbound. I mean technically yes, B8 could have decided all the games but honestly there was going to be debate on this subject regardless so I don't think it was a big problem, that's just the nature of this format. this bullet point doesn't earn itself bold text

* communication - there was no cheating/rallying fiasco that needed to be urgently addressed as in past seasons, but it still would have been really nice to have an open line of dialog- would have created some excitement and enjoyment on the board instead of giving the impression that management was hoping to have this Contest over and forgotten about as soon as possible. the last week of communication was fantastic (furry porn threat, sprites for ants, Underdraven trolling, etc), we just needed some of that in the previous 3 weeks. basically what I'm saying is, next season you should join us on The Show

Human beings aren't water jugs- solve one problem and our brain immediately goes in search of the next one. That's not a fatal flaw, it's million years of survival instinct at work.

Win the Mega Millions and you'd quit your job and be happy... for about two weeks. Then your brain would start nagging that you did nothing to earn that money and don't deserve it, and how is it fair that you have everything you could ever want while others who are twice as talented and have worked twice as hard aren't able to put food on the table for their children?

So you start giving to charity, and then you have every charity on the sun knocking on your door. Some of them do great work, but others are scams that do more harm than good. Could you tell the two apart? Would you not bother to do the research, just give money to everyone and not worry about the consequences- could you live with yourself if you made that decision?

And now it's not just charity, every distant relative is coming out of the woodwork asking for handouts. Some have great reasons (help with medical bills they can't afford) but again, half will be lazy and greedy and making up stories. Could you tell them apart, would you just keep hemorrhaging money in every direction because you're on VACATION (for life) and it's not fair for someone to expect you to use your brain?

We also have one hundred years to experience to prove that while people say they hate their job, lottery winners end up hating not having a job even more in the long run. You can say working is just a pointless rat race, but our brains take comfort in the routine.

In a format like this it's not about being overwhelmingly popular, it's about getting that extra 2% slice of the pie who wouldn't have voted in the poll otherwise. And GTA 3 does that job very well, I would imagine.

The L-Block explosion was the craziest individual thing to ever happen to these polls but I'd say that overall, the votals skyrocking and our userbase changing to more general games having success at the expense of 90s jRPGs happened moreso in 2005.

He reads the board and in fact puts on these Contests more as a favor to Board 8 than as something his bosses want him to do (they don't generate much, if any, money for the company).

It was a strange concept for a Contest and matches were in general not as competitive as I would have hoped, but there's no reason to call it an abomination. That's just being rude.

I've talked with SB but I'm not his co-worker so I don't have his schedule on hand to tell you when the next Contest will arrive. Sorry I wasn't able to provide a specific date.
