Touhou music is very stylized, which is good in that having an identity and soundtrack cohesion is good and it allows ZUN to focus more on composition as he has to worry less about instrumentation and arrangement, but Touhou music is usually so egregiously self-consistent that it's a parody of itself and sounds like the same song. This manages to straddle the line and has its cake while eating it too 167./136. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal - Vs Legendary Dogs Nominator: @-hotdogturtle-- 8.4 (8.4/0) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L82J495iWrM Wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I thought the GSC soundtracks were mostly misses for me, but now that I think about it, there are quite a few songs I like. Ice Cave, Radio Center and now this. Honestly, I don't even know why I thought that. Probably a combination of it being pushed too hard out of nostalgia and my thinking National Park is overrated. :40 is really good. The Gen 1 battle theme callback into the sudden drama was cool. I've gotten kind of exhausted on Undertale over the years, so this song having such personality while being separate helped me avoid the repetition fatigue. That melody at :36 is not what I would've expected from this kind of song, and definitely not its evolution (HA), so kudos to the composer for being imaginative with this potentially formulaic genre. It strictly gets better as it progresses. I think I would've preferred it to remain a bit darker, like how the intro indicates (although at that point I'd probably listen to Black and White's roaming legendary theme). All in all, everything you'd want in a Pokemon fangame song 174. There's something about this type of song that sticks with me... or maybe they're so inherently nostalgic I mistakenly think I recognize them. That opening is magical. Something I've learned from this project is that I like, let's say "forcefully happy" songs. Not songs like Chant This Charm that try to *force you* to be happy, nor quite songs that are bittersweet... songs that seem to be pushing through its sorrow, forcing a smile that doesn't seem cheap or cheesy, like there's genuine pain being consciously overcome. Deo's "emotional banger" like Azure Sadness is almost, but not quite, this category... it's close enough that I'll use it for the genre. There's a few other songs scattered around that I can't remember that do this kind of thing, so watch out for the genre tag (giving this a genre is basically cheating, since I'm only going to describe songs I like a lot as this) 174. If Mick Gordon was just a little less confident in his songs, I probably would agree with the memes. He doesn't give me the option to disparage this. It's edgy and over-the-top, but isn't awkward and so avoids the trap that plagues so many songs like this, allowing me to unironically enjoy it and not feel the need to laugh at it. I do like Rip & Tear a bit better though 191./152. It's pretty impressive how those high horns manage to convey genuine feeling despite being so overwhelmingly cheesy. The choir usage is also excellent. It's clearly very different in style, but this song reminds me (yet again) of Atelier Ayesha, this time with how it balances the high parts of the ukulele with an earthy guitar to keep it grounded. As far as Bastion goes, it's fairly straightforward. Good song 194. As it is, I'll take the Smash "Vs Ridley" theme over this. A lot of this is too weak to carry it into greatness. Alright I'm going to talk about that song now. It's so much cooler than I remembered. I had thought of it as like a typical Smash rock arrangement. Apparently, the last time I heard this was back before I had any appreciation (or really understanding) of weirdly-timed music, because the 5/8 thing that this song does is really cool in the rock format (and that bass!), whereas in the nomination it's nothing special. It needed something to push it over the edge.
