I think it's obvious

I started to develop a smokers cough and it's gotten worse recently so I'm going to try and quit again. I finished my last pack last night after stretching out out over 3 days, also using lozenges.

I won't make the same mistake as last time where I thought I was good to socially smoke after 3 months.

I don't especially care, they all suck and nothing will change

Nope, and based on what I've heard from friends/family in unions it sounds like they take your money without actually doing anything besides making sure the shitty workers can't get fired

That's not true at all, both sides can be the bad guy.

Should Israel exist? Probably not, it only exists because the west wanted an ally in the middle east and they've mostly been terrible, but that doesn't justify what hamas is doing. Their anger is justified, sure, but not their actions. I'm not sure why its either you support Israel or hamas like you can't think both are terrible (even if hamas is clearly worse)

Halloween is boomer horror
The way people jump to so vehemently defend those pieces of junk baffles me.

Schmen and I are doing our annual horror marathon, and I had a better time with the Child's Play series than I am with the Halloween series. The first 3 Child's Plays were at least comically bad. Halloween isn't even comically bad, its just bad.

This might be the worst take I've even seen from you. Halloween is so great, from the suspense, camera work, music, story, characters, etc. Excessive gore, jump scares and cheesy dialogue and effects don't make a horror movie good.

The only good ones imo are Halloween 2, 4 and 5 and the Friday the 13th movies up until the fake Jason, I think that's the 4th, but besides that even those franchises have garbage like H20 and Jason goes to Hell. Most are just part of a shitty franchise in general but almost all the great horror movies have exclusively terrible sequels.

In my opinion, Gnosticism is a lot more conceptually valid than Christianity. It's also infinity more terrifying if it were true. It doesn't have any kind of an endgame. Just mankind trapped in an infinite inescapable cycle, with the only players capable of stopping it, being completely indifferent to our very existence. No surprise it didn't win history's favor.

Why did they cut out the part where yhwh is the evil creator god and Jesus comes to save people from him? If yhwh was omnipotent, omniscient and all loving there wouldn't be evil and Jesus wouldn't need to come and save anyone but if he's coming from a higher God that's pissed at yhwh for being a shitty creator god it makes so much more sense why he couldn't just forgive people himself.

It doesn't matter, it's magic. As long as you don't take people out of the story with the characters using magic to solve all their problems or have a ridiculous deus ex machina they will still suspend their disbelief.

It's called a hard magic system where magic works more like a science instead of actual magic. Personally I like soft magic systems better because of that. I want magic to be magic, not otherworldly science.

Best way is to throw yourself into a hobbie. Go read a book or play video games or something, your mind will be focused on that instead.

I don't know how conservation efforts became a liberal thing. I was raised fairly conservatively but we were taught the value of nature. I was a boy scout so preserving nature was kind of a big deal and no one would claim they are a liberal organization. Also it was Teddy that created the national park service.

If you don't feel much of anything after crossing the threshold for binge drinking, that indicates a chronic pattern of alcohol abuse. You should try to cut back.

I know how alcoholism works, I have known many alcoholics, I also know how addiction works first hand with cigarettes. I'm not an alcoholic, I have no dependency on or cravings for alcohol

It gets me to a nice buzz, it's not nothing but not drunk either. When I think binge drinking I think at least drunk, if not completely wasted

Nope, that's the definition of binge drinking. Bear in mind that "binge drinking" is defined by professionals who have extensively studied the effects alcohol has on the body and identified a threshold after which acute damage occurs, rather than by laypeople who just set the bar based on social norms among their peer group. Those are also "standard drinks," which means 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% liquor. A pint of beer is actually 1.33 drinks, or more if it's stronger than 5%.

5 drinks doesn't even get me drunk though while it could get someone smaller (or with a less tolerance) plastered, you'd think that would play a role in what's binging or not

That seems like a really low bar for binge drinking, that is like just a normal night out with your friends, when I hear binge drinking im thinking 10+

While not exactly what you're looking for, I recommend Umberto Eco. If you want something full-length, The Name of The Rose is a great book to start with, but he's also written multiple collections of shorter essays, How To Travel With A Salmon is a great one.

What genre does he write in? I'm looking to branch out into other genres

I kind of preferred the overarching story of books 4-7. But if you have a problem with references to past stuff and callbacks, you might start to tap out around the same point I did.

I did love 4-7 as well, but I don't need like 100 callbacks to the 1st trilogy, he probably could have cut out a whole book from it. I do love the world though, there's so many unique creatures and locations. What point did you tap out?

It's worth asking if you're interested in more soft sci-fi or harder sci-fi, but since Asimov's really the only one I was going to suggest it won't help me to recommend things all that much.

For obscure fantasy... again, it kind of depends on what sort of flavor of fantasy you're into.

I'm not sure where the line is for hard sci-fi vs soft sci-fi but my favorites that I read were Clarke and Crichton

As far as Fantasy goes I'm down for pretty much anything, so I'll look into those authors got mentioned, Pratchett is one I've been thinking about trying out for a while

Back onto books I've actually read - there's Terry Brooks. The Shannara series is pretty well known (and has gotten adapted into TV shows before), but it's worth mentioning (because you never know what authors newer/younger readers have actually heard of). The first few books feel like fairly derivative Tolkien-clone stuff, and the later books feel like the series has spiraled out of control from the desire to keep publishing popular books until he can retire a multi-millionaire, but there's definitely a sweet spot in the series where it's very good. So it might be worth a look (and then just drop out if the books start feeling dull later - I think I dropped out somewhere around book 8).

I just finished the Talismans of Shannara yesterday, I love the world he's built so far. My only problem with him is that he calls back to previous books way too much, but I love his characters and stories so I push through it, definitely worth it. I know a lot of people say Sword of Shannara is a Tolkien clone but honestly it loses that vibe for me like half way through. My favorite from the first 7 books has probably been Wishsong of Shannara.

It's funny that you bring up the Odyssey series, I've read 2001 and 2010, I also own 2061 but haven't gotten around to it yet

While I love the movie and it's in my top 10 all time the book is much better, I can also say that for LotR and Jurassic Park which are some of my favorite movies of all time too, it's crazy how much better books are than movie adaptions even if the movie adoptions are among the greatest movies of all time

By not working a 9-5, I have a similar schedule every week but it's usually different enough where it doesn't feel like I'm in a rut
