I'm going to see Mudvayne, Coal Chamber and Gwar. I just saw Mudvayne last year in their reunion tour and they were amazing. Coal Chamber is one of those bands that I like but aren't one of my favorites but I never thought I'd as them live so they'll be cool. As for Gwar, I don't know many songs but I heard their shows are great. I'll enjoy it alone too I think.

Also I know all too well about skipping a show just for the band to break up/a member to die, I missed out on Rush before Peart died, R.I.P.

Just finished the Wise Man's Fear, since this topic was still up I figured it would be best to talk about it here.

This should probably be longer than a trilogy, I mean, it's 2 books in and he covered roughly 6 years of his life story. He has got at least another decade and a half between the time he ended at the 2nd night and the present day, probably more, either that book is going to be huge or he'll have to gloss over a lot of his adult life to finish up in 3 books.

I just hope Denna shows up at the Waystone Inn at the end of the last book.

It's no wonder Rothfuss is taking so long for the 3rd book

My favorite series so far, but I don't think the third book is coming out. I also devoured the books immediately when I first read them. To this day not another book series has captured me as much as KKC has.

This is coming from a guy who read all of Wheel of Time. It seems so average compared to KKC.
I read it so fast too, probably my 2nd favorite fantasy author after Tolkien and probably top 5 overall but I'm not sure if I'm willing to put him above Crichton, Clarke, or King yet.

Do you view lower taxes as an 'inherent' good, or simply a desirable good? Are there not examples of countries with much higher tax rates than the USA, and with better standards of living? Is there not the example of the USA having a far higher tax rate on higher income earners in the 50s and there being a generally (but still present) smaller wealth gap?
The US government is trash so limiting their power is good. Theoretically higher taxes could be better if they were actually used for things that benefitted people but it mostly goes into politicians pockets or their friends. I think the common man in the US, in general but not always, would use that money better than the government. Why have my taxes gone up with nothing to show for it? And what's with all these stupid laws that have nothing to do with people's rights? These are problems with both big parties, they don't give a shit about the people and only care about their own power and money. Democrats claim to be champions of minorities and acceptance while not actually giving a shit about minorities and just give everyone this song and dance while the Republicans claim to be the champions of freedom and the constitution but don't give 2 shits about any of that and push a regressive Christian agenda. So it's not that I think lower taxes are inherently good as much as limiting the us governments power is inherently good. But then again I don't think you can have a "good" government for long, they all eventually get corrupt and turn to shit regardless of type of government so it's best to limit it before it gets to that point.

No matter how good public transportation gets it'll still never be as good as cars. I guess unless you just have ubers/taxis/whatever just circling every street waiting for you to exit your home and pick you up in less than a minute but that'll never happen because it's a bigger waste of resources than cars. You are still stuck waiting on someone else's schedule and have to wait twice as long if not longer then just getting in your own car and just going. I guess it would be nice to get the streets cleared up but that requires a bunch of people to fuck themselves over.

The problem isn't AI taking over all jobs, though. It's AI taking over some jobs, so there are still plenty of people able to buy stuff, but also plenty of people starving to death because they can't work.

This is why UBI is needed in the immediate future. It won't be necessary in a robo-communist utopia where money no longer has any meaning, but there's a long way to go before then and the current powers that be are going to fiercely resist giving up that power (despite the fact that most of their jobs could be done pretty easily by AI).
I'm not going to argue against those points, but we have enough garbage entertainment to shift through as is, we don't need to mass produce even more garbage at an even faster rate. The world could stop making any kind of art or entertainment and we'd still have enough to keep people happy for a lifetime

This fundamentally misunderstands who makes the decisions in this matter. It's not about what jobs people want to do. It's about what jobs those with the resources to influence AI research want to avoid paying people for so they can keep making all the money and not have to give it to anyone else.

There is no "should be." This is just capitalism doing exactly what capitalism does if nobody stops it.
What they fail to realize is that once AI takes over all jobs money will be useless, if no one is working no one will have money to buy things, but it'll also be a post scarcity world once it gets to that point and people can focus on things like art without being a starving artist

Why is it OK for AI or machines to replace some jobs but not these jobs?
No one wants to be a factory worker, people do want to be painters, musicians, writers, and film makers though. Imo we should let robots take over the shit jobs no one wants and keep them out of the arts (and other fun jobs)

ParanoidObsessive posted...
It also doesn't help that most arguments talking about how crucial human awareness and insight are to producing "art" ring incredibly hollow and hypocritical considering how commodified and soulless "entertainment" has become over the last hundred years or so. Most popular music, film, shows, and illustration produced at this point has nearly zero artistic value, and is produced as "content" more than "art". It exists to entertain at the most shallow level and generate revenue.
So you are telling me masterpieces like Dark Side of the Moon, 2001, and Lord of the Rings are gone regardless of AI?
