Whirpools, waterspouts, tornadoes, they're kinda cool to look at pictures of but I would freak the fuck out if I saw any of them in person even from a perfectly safe distance. Granted, at least those things are actually dangerous in and of themselves. A weirder one for me is being strangely freaked out by, like, icebergs. Granted, I think that's less about any emotional component than it is about sheer physical comfort for me, because I love being the "holder" as well in big hugs. There is dialogue throughout the game with NPCs speculating as to why -- the Queen says he was tarnished by "thought instilled" or something along those lines, and others suggest he may not have been completely empty. It was theorized, based on some random quotes (and also removed Dream Nail lines from the Hollow Knight fight that include "...Father?.."), that maybe that lack of emptiness was due to a father/son bond that formed between the Pale King and the Hollow Knight. There's a cradle in a hidden room in the White Palace that plays a lullaby version of the Shade theme, and the last thought of the King when you Dream Nail his corpse is "...no cost too great..." He created the Hollow Knight with the purpose of being an empty vessel to contain The Radiance, but ended up caring for him -- not only that, but the Hollow Knight cared too. The fact that the Path of Pain rewards you with the Seal of Binding, which says "Used to contain a powerful force, or to preserve something of great importance" is especially sad when you realize that the "something of great importance" the Pale King wanted to preserve was just an innocent memory with his "son." The Hollow Knight was flawed because he loved and missed his father. --- |

It wasn't particularly difficult (especially if you used hiveblood), but it was just painful and very unlike the rest of the platforming in the game. I didn't struggle on any part but I was very glad when it was over - and not in a sense with any joy. I get why people feel this way, because its definitely a quantum leap in platforming difficulty, but I loved it personally. Not like you need it to beat the game, its a tough challenge for those who want the final ending. Come to think of it, before NKG was added in, the Radiance wouldve been a similarly massive leap. They bust your ass in both platforming and bosses for that ultimate ending. --- |
