I mean, even though video games are much more widely consumed now, I don't think they're considered the norm. Video games and video game references are not obscure anymore nor was it ever a vehicle against the grain of society. The hacker scene is. But gaming never was counterculture. Maybe you could argue that it played into Gen-X and their general apathetic mood to participation in society. But it never really became a rallying cry of a generation to turn on, tune in, and drop out. Being a geek or a nerd never was counterculture unless you were a hacker of sorts. Mainly because it wasn't popular or 'cool' enough to even be considered anything other then a hobby enjoyed by shut-ins and shiftless teens. Only difference is its in the mainstream now and everyone is a geek and nerd. Counterculture is what the cool teens and 20 somethings are doing a Saturday night that is against expected norms with a idea behind it. Doing E and going to raves in the early 90s was counterculture. Sitting at home alone or with a couple friends playing D&D or SNES wasn't. --- |

It could start off with you part of a NCR task force traveling to Hawaii where you get shipwrecked and find yourself a stranger in a strange land. Having to learn a new language, and dealing with a isolated group and everything else. The whole time I was there a couple years ago I kept thinking it would make a good Fallout setting. But it would take someone to make a really nuanced understanding of the place. Something Bethesda probably couldn't pull off but Obsidian could. Another choice would be Seattle. --- |
