The new year is off to a great start for dog lovers, thanks to the addition of two new dog breeds by the American Kennel Club.

The AKC, the world's largest purebred dog registry, announced Tuesday that the Russian Toy and Mudi are joining the list of its recognized breeds.

"We're thrilled to have two unique breeds join the registry," said Gina DiNardo, executive secretary of the AKC, in a statement.

Russian Toy is a tiny, active and cheerful dog with roots in Russian aristocracy, the AKC said. The dogs love people and just want to make those around them happy. Fittingly, the Russian Toy will be a member of the Toy Group, AKC said, and there are only about 775 in the US.

The Mudi, on the other hand, will be a member of the herding group, which includes breeds like the German Shepherd or the Collie. The Mudi is originally from Hungary, where the breed was used on farms, the AKC said. The dogs tend to be loyal, energetic and affectionate -- and perfect for any runners in the family.

"This is not the breed for a first-time dog owner. While some may call the breed stubborn, I see it as getting bored if constantly drilled," said Susanne Bergesen, corresponding secretary of the Mudi Club of America, in a statement. "They are thinkers, love to learn, learn quickly, and do not need lots of repetitions to acquire most skills."

The breed is still rather rare, though -- according to the AKC, there are only about 450 of the dogs in the US, and up to about 4,000 worldwide.

Loving a dog doesn't necessarily mean treating it properly to avoid promoting aggressive tendencies, or training out any that have been instilled in it. This is a case where ignorance can be just as dangerous as malice.

Yes, perhaps she could've done more to keep the pitbull's predisposition for aggression contained.

It's difficult though, because even the most well trained pitbulls can be triggered by a seemingly innocuous event and immediately enter kill or be killed mode.

My high school friend owned a pitbull. He also owned a cat. They seemed to get along well enough and he was always posting cute photos of the two of them together. And then one day the pitbull killed the cat. Nobody knows why.

Maybe it meowed too loudly.

According to the police report, the Dec. 8 incident was not the first time the family's dog had shown signs of aggression, but Shannon said Heather had a fondness for animals and couldn't toss the pet aside.

A local veterinary clinic told police the dog was up to date on its shots and did not have any known health issues.

If treated properly, no dog has a predisposition to violence. Violent behaviour is a product of mistreatment. It's easier to mistreat a pit bull to the point where aggression becomes an issue than it is for many other breeds, and their strength means that becomes a problem very quickly, but the root cause is still that mistreatment, so that's what really needs to be prevented. At the end of the day, even if every dog breed that has any potential to harm somebody else is banned, those people will still be abusing dogs, and that's not okay.

The woman in this story who was murdered by her own dog loved the thing.

I'm sure you wouldn't disagree that dogs can vary widely from one breed to another. Personality, skills, intelligence, etc. We have dogs that weigh two pounds and dogs that weight 200 pounds.

So looking at that huge diversity, why on earth would you think that predisposition to violence is a trait that somehow isn't more present in some breeds than others? That they're all equal or near equal? That's absurd.

I don't blame pit bulls for being how they are. People made them that way. They're decedents of a breed specifically bred for fighting other dogs, or bulls, or bears, or whatever animal that garbage 19th century people thought would be entertaining to watch kill or be killed.

More accurately, to compare a movement to try to ban certain dog breeds to a hypothetical movement to try to ban certain minorities. That does not rely on comparing minorities to violent dogs, only on comparing the rationale behind it.

However, since you seem to want to make the comparison between dogs and people, let's try it on for size:

Pit bulls in the US - ~4.5 million
Deaths by pit bulls in the US - ~27 per year (65% of 40 overall dog deaths)
Deaths per million pit bulls per year - 6.0 (I'm unreasonably happy this ended up being an integer >.>)

White people in the US - ~234.3 million (in 2017)
Murders by white people in US - 3011 (in 2018)
Murders per million white people in 2018 - 12.9

Black people in the US - 40.6 million (in 2017)
Murders by black people in the US - 3177 (in 2018)
Murders per million black people in 2018 - 775.3

People of other races in the US - 35.9 million
Murders by Other - 207
Murders per million Other in 2018 - 5.8

It would appear that, if we accept the premise that there should be a ban on breeding pit bulls because of how dangerous they are, it would be logically consistent to also have ban on breeding white and black humans, as any given member of either race is significantly more likely to kill somebody than any given pit bull. The "Other" category could stand to be broken down further, but given that its average is so close to that of the pit bulls', I expect this logic would also support banning several of them.

I don't even like pits but they have a point, unless you don't think people used to call native Americans savages or considered black people more dangerous. There are clear parallels there and you need to stop thinking about it as devaluing minorities by comparing to animals.

No, I'm going to choose not to ignore the demeaning of Black people by comparing them to dogs to try and score a political point. Come up with a better analogy.

The issue with pitbulls isn't necessarily their temperament but their ability to kill and how they attack. When a pitbull decides to attack, they start and don't stop until either they are dead or the prey is. They have extremely strong jaws and bites that cause massive destruction.

They have a strong bite, but aren't in the top-5 among dogs breeds. Their problem is that they are direct descents of a now extinct 19th century British breed that was specifically bred for blood sports.

My sister had a pit mix and I can say that seeing/hearing people be afraid of her made me feel like shit because the Kali was a sweet heart. An extremely nice, loyal dog that wanted exercise, cuddles, and as much love as she could get. She wasn't in our family because we liked to feel feared and powerful with her around; my sister picked her at the pound because she was a great dog that needed a home.

Enough people know this, and I know people like you who think they are all dangerous aren't going to be swayed by the reality that it's all about the owners and what situations you put dogs in, but I still feel the need to spread the pit love. They are an amazing breed.

Imagine a product, like a ladder, that has 5% market share but is responsible for 75% of all fatal ladder accidents. At some point you have to stop blaming user error, and concede the ladder has a design flaw.

Solo in broad daylight in a crowd of people? Nope. Most animals are concerned with self-preservation and don't pick fights they can't win unless they're desperate, unwell, etc. To a pitbull, the sport of the fight mattered more than its own life.

Anyone see the video of the pit trying to kill a horse pulling a carriage in the middle of the day surrounded by a crowd of people? There's not another animal on the planet that would behave like that.

I love dogs, but pitbulls were literally bred to fight. Yes, you have shithead owners encouraging the behavior, but it's in their DNA. Most will be fine as pets, but there is a risk they pose that other breeds do not.
