Busy with university work (save me) so the responses might be a little shorter.

I liked it more on repeat listens. It doesn't blow me away, but I find myself enjoying it rather than being merely indifferent. Probably a borderline 6 or 7, but I'll say it's a low 7/10.

Shonen_Bat posted...
Breath of the Wild having long stretches of just ambient noise or complete silence probably hurts it a bit soundtrack wise. I'd say it's easily up to par with other Zelda games when it does have music, though.

It's decent. For some reason, it doesn't really sound like a credits theme to me. It's lacking something in that regard, but it's still alright. A solid 6/10.

Fire Emblem Awakening - "Don't speak her name!"

My favourite song from Fire Emblem Awakening. It ticks many of the boxes for things I like: epic, emotional, melodic, harmonic, progressive. Of course, the main thing is that it's just a beautiful song. I haven't actually played FEA, but I'm sure where this plays is a moment to remember. A solid 9/10, my favourite song so far.

Zigzagoon posted...

This one is probably a high 7/10, but you already knew that. It's a good atmospheric piece. The part at 0:42-1:15 is the absolute stand out, but outside of that it's slightly unremarkable. I'll probably have a look through the soundtrack sometime to see if there's anything else from I like.

Shi Kong Xing Shou - Dungeon Theme 1 ~ Meteor Shower

I find the melody to be a bit... piercing. The melody itself isn't bad (actually, it's good), but the 'instrument' comes off as harsh and hard to listen to for long. The bass also stands apart from the rest in some parts, like it doesn't really belong there. A good song, potentially even 7, let down by the instrumentation. At the moment it's worth 5/10.

LOLIAmAnAlt posted...

This is pretty rockin' for the title screen music to Pictionary. The mastering makes the whole thing sound slightly tinny and low quality to me, beyond what I'd naturally expect from an NES, which is a shame. The song itself is actually really good though. I think it's worth a low 7/10 overall.

Zyxyz0 posted...

It's a song with flavor and style. I want to like it, but for some reason it's just not clicking with me. Maybe that guitar whine is just a bit too weird for me, or the whole song is just a bit too slow and methodical. Gonna have to settle with a high 5/10.

Been a busy day and I'm exhausted. I'll post up my thoughts on these (and any others I get) tomorrow after I wake up... so in around 9 hours?

Look forward to it, because I already know I'll be giving my first 9/10.

It's a battle of the Battle Networks. Three out of the five songs from that series.

MycroProcessor posted...

Don't like this one, sorry. A bit too messy... sounds like the different layers of backing are fighting with each other and the "melody". It creates tension, which suits the idea of a final fight, but it's not what I like in music. Solid 3/10.

Shonen_Bat posted...

Really like this song. One of my favourites from Breath of the Wild, a game with a soundtrack which I think is better than most people give it credit for. The clarinet (?) which plays the main melody is a delight and I love the string swells and flourishes between sections. It gives me the impression of a rising sun or the view panning out across the wilderness from the top of the village. It's relaxing, sentimental, but also hopeful. A solid 8/10.

NFUN posted...

Similar to the previous MMBN song, tension is built here through the opening section through disagreement between the instrumentation. Problem is, I don't enjoy listening to that. It comes together at 0:26 for a nice little tune, which bumps this up a point. Still only a high 4/10 though.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Main Theme

I honestly found this pretty boring. I think it's astonishingly subdued for a main theme, even considering what the game is. Not much else to say, so a low 5/10.

Zigzagoon posted...

The winner of the battle of the Battle Networks. It's pretty decent. I like the melody, and the backing doesn't intrude upon it too much. Problem is that it's a bit short, and the transition into the loop at 0:32-0:38 is veeery clumsy. I'll give it a solid 6/10.

Resident Evil 2 - The Front Hall

For an entirely atmospheric piece, this was really quite good. A surprise. I particularly like the piano flourishes throughout. Such songs can only do so well though... probably a high 6/10 overall.

NFUN posted...

Faster Than Light has a good soundtrack! This is actually probably one of my lesser-preferred of the battle themes, but even that is still really enjoyable. I think this one's main weakness is that it's lacking in variety; sounds kinda samey most of the way through. A low 7/10.

MycroProcessor posted...

This one is reeeeally hard to rate. It's one of the weirdest PMD dungeon themes, I can say that much. The drums/rhythm in the first 30 seconds don't really do it for me, since I think it clashes with the horn. Later parts of the song though, such as 0:43-1:17, are actually really good. It grew on me even more when I listened to it a couple more times. The part after it is just okay. I wish following 1:17 there was a section where the horn plays a new section, perhaps in a different key? Well anyway, the intro is probably a 4, the main part is probably 7 or 8, and the following section is a 5, so I guess I'll be slightly generous and give it a low 7/10 overall. Cute Flygon, by the way~

Trails in the Sky the 3rd - Bobcat's Counteroffensive Operation

I don't really care for this one honestly. I find parts of this song to be a little all over the place... hyperactive in an unconstrained kind of way. The chorus (0:48-1:10) is decent at least. Goes to show that even when Falcom makes a song I consider to be on the weaker side, it still has at least some good parts. A 5/10.

Shonen_Bat posted...

It's just okay. The music from the more recent Touhou games (14-16) hasn't resonated with me in the way that the older games do. Part of that is the sound font, which I think is inferior to the one he used to use. Beyond that, I dare say I feel that... ZUN has lost his touch? I do think I'm in the minority in that though, because from what I've seen the most recent game's soundtrack has actually be well received in the community. Guess I'm just a grumpy old man when it comes to Touhou, hah. Anyway, it's not bad but I didn't really get anything out of it, so it's a 5/10.

I like the song's intensity. I enjoyed it overall, but there's... something about some of the note choices that don't sit entirely right with me. So it's a song I want to like more, but as-is can only call a low 6/10. The pterodactyl aliens are pretty cool looking, by the way.

Muv-Luv Alternative - For You Who Departs

When this first started, I was ready to be a heartless soul and say "I find emotional piano pieces like this pretty boring", but by the end of it, I was actually digging it. The bit of melody at 0:41-0:55 and similar throughout the song sounds good. The climax in the last minute sold it for me. A high 7/10.

Shonen_Bat posted...

Even though this is an arrangement of the main metroid theme, I found it kinda boring. Maybe I need to play Metroid Prime to really appreciate this in context. It's not bad at all, I just don't find anything here to be excited about. Solid 5/10.

MycroProcessor posted...

This has the makings of a song I'd really enjoy, but it didn't really leave an impact on me in the end. I think it's the lack of a clear melodic line. It's a purely mood-setting piece with all of that improv going on. Decent enough, but eh, a high 5/10.

TheKnightOfNee posted...

I find that this song plods along too much without really going anywhere. I was expecting something to happen, but it never did. That weird breathing sound too... what's with that? Not really a fan overall, but it's not at all terrible. A solid 4/10.

LOLIAmAnAlt posted...
I broke the scoring system, yesss.

This is actually a pretty good song, but the instrumentation and mastering lets it down. Notes in the melody sound a little too monotonic and it blends into the bass again. I think you could make a pretty kick-ass arrangement out of this song. As is though, a high 6/10.

I think the PS1 Spyro soundtracks don't get enough love. They're classics, to me. While this isn't necessarily a super favorite of mine from the original Spyro, I do still like it. I think its weakness is that it sounds kinda samey throughout. Still, a low 7/10, at least.

The brass in the first half minute of the song is a little harsh on me. Don't particularly like that part. Once the rest of the instrumentation comes in at 0:46 though, the song really hits its stride. I think it's pretty decent, especially 1:53-2:16. I'll give it a solid 6/10 overall.

A climactic piano piece. I'm familiar with this one already, as I'm a big fan of Umineko's OST. One of the more memorable songs, and certainly one I like quite a bit, but not a favorite. I think it's a bit of a one trick pony. Worth a low 7/10.

Never heard of this one before. It's an interesting song. Has sections I really like and sections I don't as much, in pretty rapid succession. Some sections are too chaotic for their own good. Overall though, I don't mind it. A high 5/10.

This one is good. A cool blend of "Arabian" with modern electronica. Love the flavor. I do wish the beat had more variation between 0:30 and 1:30 though, as I find it a bit relentless. A solid 7/10.

Rewrite - Deep Forest

Not familiar with this game at all. Listening though, this song was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it. I have a soft spot for accordions (when they're not overused), and slot in well here. The string follow up at 0:50-1:19 is probably my favorite part. I do think the song is lacking some oomph though - something to make a lasting impact. A solid 7/10.

MycroProcessor posted...

A weird one, but not unpleasant. Something which probably fits great in context, but isn't something I'd listen to casually. Too much focus on ambient noises and things rather than music in the traditional sense. A 3/10.

Persona 5 - Layer Cake

Hm, makes me wonder if there is a way to coordinate it somehow? Have a thread where multiple people comment on the nominated songs? It'd be open to that, at least.

Persona 5 is a contender for my 2017 OST of the year, and this song is in the better half of the soundtrack for sure. The song just oozes style, and I love the rhythm throughout. 1:14 onward is particularly sweet. A solid 8/10.

NFUN posted...

Another soundtrack I'm familiar with. There's almost no bad songs on it, and this one is no exception. It's very pleasent, but it does fade into the background a bit - might even be slightly unremarkable were it not an arrangement of one of the series' main themes. I do like it more than FC's route theme, for sure. I'd say a low 7/10.

We'll see if your opinion matches mine.

Ending songs like this are incredibly 90s. Singers in general are something I don't appreciate as much as others, so I tend to find these sorts of things kinda... melodramatic and cheesy? Speaking about 0:00-3:30 and 6:00-7:46 in particular, it's probably one of the better such songs I've heard, but it still doesn't really do a whole lot for me. What really stands out is actually the instrumental medley at 3:30-6:00. There's some really good sections in there, especially the first half, 3:30-5:00. Would be keen to know what songs in the soundtrack they're based off of. I need to rate the song on a whole though, so I'll give it a solid 6/10.

LOLIAmAnAlt posted...

I find the bass sound slightly grating. The melody section, when it enters, gets a bit lost in it too, which is a shame. I hear the makings of a good track in here though. If the instrumentation were a bit different, I think I'd really, really like this. For now, I'll give it a a 5/10, in the "has good and bad poins" rather than "indifferent" sense.

I've seen a few VGM rating threads pop up lately. I want in on it too so... here we go!

Nominate a song and I'll post my thoughts and rate it from 0 to 10 according to the following scale:

0 - Abysmal; wouldn't wish it on anyone
1 - Hate it; among my least favorite
2
3 - Don't like it; probably won't come back to it
4
5 - Indifferent; don't have a strong opinion either way
6
7 - Like it; will listen to it again
8
9 - Love it; among my favorites
10 - Exceptional; would show it to everyone I know

Once I've rated the song, you can nominate another.
