The Icy Maiden, Captain Claire. I dunno about that nickname, despite appearances she’s not all that cold. She’s highly competent and certainly is pragmatic, but she gives Class 7 a lot of leeway to act, and is highly respected by her subordinates. She’s also really sweet on Rean, as she grows to understand the boy throughout the series. In any case, she rocks the military uniform, rocks casual adventure wear, and of course she rocks the sleeveless dress she wears in Roer. Girl just oozes sex appeal to the point where it’s almost not fair. I love her little side plait, it really makes her blue hair stand out. She’s useful in battle, though you don’t get her for very long in CS2. She’s one of Osbourne’s most trusted subordinates, which is unfortunate since the dude is slimier than a porn star’s cooch, but who knows, maybe she’ll be convinced to turn to the good side. Maybe… Anyway, I really like Claire, and I hope she has something to do in Cold Steel 3.

So Miri is the last of our very good waifus, and happens to be our second last NPC. She has a minor role in Zero as a basic soldier and surprise boss fight, but her role gets greatly expanded upon in Ao where she gets her own portrait, and bails the heroes out of a few bad situations. She’s a very talented field commander, and gets the most out of her soldiers, but she’s probably most deeply defined by her wicked lady boner for Randy Orlando, who she is totally Tsundere for. She’s a really cute blonde, and the CSGF uniform really makes any lady look even cuter than usual. When the Crossbell Guardian Force and Police becomes the Crossbell Defense Arrmy, she’s quick to rebel against President Dieter and the current state of affairs, believing them to be unjust. I love a woman who can stick by her ideals through thick and thin, and her courage and loyalty are strong pluses for me.

Cuteness is justice, and Anelace is cuteness! Wow, I pretty much said the exact same thing last year. So yeah, Anelace didn’t quite make the cut into the excellent waifu tier, but she’s pretty dang close. She’s a student of the Eight Leaves One Blade school, which makes her a badass, she has a great sense of humour, and she loves cute things… what’s not to love? I still need to play Trails 3rd chapter, because playable Anelace! And not just for a sidequest or the prologue.

All hail Arianrhod. She’s been mentioned a few times in other writeups, but she finally makes an appearance here. She’s the 7th Anguis of Ouroboros, and outright stated by multiple people in the know to be the Lance Maiden of years past, Lianne Sandlot. Though Falcom is being very hush hush about it, like she may be a descendant or something like that, but the way she acts and the things she says don’t make sense unless she is. So uh, I guess I’ve got the cougar demographic covered hahaha. In any case, she’s an incredibly beautiful woman, and doesn’t honestly seem like the Ouroboros type. All of them have some sort of hidden darkness to them, and maybe Arianrhod does, but she hates to involve citizens, she shows mercy to the SSS because KeA asked her to, and she does seem to believe in law and order, judging by the way she helped you deal with a crooked land speculator. I’d really like to see more of her, and from the looks of things ToCS3 is not going to disappoint, since Ouroboros is sending a lot of firepower Osborne’s way.

Wait, this is the first playable character from Zero? I guess part of that is the smaller playable cast, but Zero and Ao were just good with waifus in general. Tio is with you from the very beginning of the game, and her support is invaluable to the team. Whether it’s communicating with Zeit, navigating the terminal and dealing with the orbal net, or just using her enhanced sensors to detect things the rest of the party could not find. She’s 14, so she’s actually taken down a notch for being underaged, but she makes an appearance in CS3, so slight push.

Tio is basically a kuudere. Her general approach is very quiet and deadpan, but when she cares about something, she’s incredibly sweet about it. Whether it’s her budding crush on Lloyd, or her love of all things Mishy, Tio is probably the sweetest character in the series. Maybe. She has a terribly tragic backstory that just made me so angry and sad and want to protect her for the rest of her life, even though she’s more than capable of taking care of herself. (she might be the best character for battle in Ao, no joke). In any case, she’s highly capable, incredibly kind, and honest, Tio is gonna be a great woman when she grows up.

Let’s eliminate another group of NPC’s with Rosine, being the last member of Cold Steel’s cast that you cannot use in battle. Rosine is a shapely girl who works at the church part time in addition to her studies. She has blonde hair, and rocks the nun habit. She’s patient, kind and considerate to everyone, and seems to be great with children. The big shocking twist is that she’s actually a squire of the second dominion, a fact you only learn on NG+, which means she knows all about the various conspiracies ouroboros and Osborne are up to. She’s also a capable apothecary, which could come in handy, you never know. Rosine is too good and pure for this sinful Zemuria.

Mayor Maybelle is the last NPC to fall from the sky series, but it was quite a run for her. She’s the mayor of Bose, one of the richer regions of Liberl, due in part to its booming trade economy. In addition to being the mayor of Bose, she is also the owner of the Bose Market, and Anterose restaurant, so her time is pretty restricted due to work. She’s hardworking, and honest to a fault, and she’s willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to do the right thing. In addition to her high class beauty, Mayor Maybelle ticks all the boxes for being a good waifu. She may be married to her work, but she does not let her success or her wealth go to her head, and she’s very down to earth.

Emma, Emma, Emma. If this only had encompassed the first Cold Steel game, she would have been a lot lower on the list. She hide secrets from the party, and is caught completely unawares by Misty even though she should have know that was Vita from the very start. Of course, Cold Steel 2 does a good job of showing why Emma needed to keep her secrets, and how Vita put a geas on her to make her unable to notice her presence. So I feel like the game did a good job of justifying her reasons.

Emma is a witch of the Hexen Clan, a mysterious group who seems to preserve the old history that has been lost to the ages. She attended Thors on an academic scholarship, and she is at least the most booksmart student in the school, constantly ending up in the very top spot for exams and tests. She also happens to be rather beautiful, with gorgeous red-pink hair, a tall stature, and a pair of globes to make cartographers jealous. She’s kind and courteous, and takes it upon herself to help Fie study (because she’s years behind on the education track compared to the rest of class 7). She does her part not to shake the boat, mostly because of her witch related reasons. There’s definitely a lot to like about Emma, despite the early impression she gives off. I think she and Rean make the best pair out of his various suitors, but I just like some of the other ladies more. After all, I’m no Sean Chiplock, flames do not gather on my blade.

Probably the most unpopular opinion on here, Linde being the better twin than Vivi, like what kind of monster am I? Just the regular type who likes cute pink haired girls, that’s who. While Vivi is flamboyant and eccentric, Linde is polite and kind, though easily flustered by Vivi’s antics. I actually grew to like Linde more in TocS2, when it showed just how much Vivi relies on Linde’s steady presence to keep her on the level. They’re twins so they both share each other's good looks, I just like Linde more because she is responsible and sweet. So fite me.

Keeping the Thors Military Academy NPC train a runnin, the next one on the list is Bridget. She’s elegant, she’s kind, and she’s not at all stuck up for a noble. Her little side story through the events of Cold Steel involve her childhood friend Alan who thinks he’s not good enough for her, even though they are clearly in love with each other. She’s a talented musician as well, so that’s just bonus points. Her story will never be deeply intertwined with Class 7’s, but she’s good in the background, and ends up quite high on my list for it.

Becky is another one of those class 7 students that was just really charming. Perhaps it was the localization giving her a scottish accent, or just the way that she played off Hugo, her little side story was a lot of fun. Her hometown got razed in Cold Steel 2 so she got to show some serious emotion rather than enterprising young business woman with a hair trigger temper and it was good. Even the NPC’s of the trails series have a fair amount of depth to them, and that’s really cool.

Vivi is fun and spontaneous, having her around would always brighten up your day no matter how dark it got. She’s part of the gardening club with Fie and Edel, and while she does like it, she also like swapping places with Linde from time to time to throw people off her scent while she pulls various pranks. She doesn’t do anything harmful like youtube pranks, but things like tricking Rean into giving her sister a flower that’s basically a marriage proposal in the language of flowers, or teasing Rean about lingerie. She’s really funny, even in a minor role, and she has cute pink hair. A+.

That’s Duvalie the Swift, and don’t you forget it bub! I have to say, she wouldn’t have stood out as much to me if Eden Riegel didn’t do such a damn good job with her voice acting. She’s a fangirl of the almighty Arianrhod and the leader (yes really) of the Stahlritter. Because she actually makes her first appearance in Trails to Azure, I have her counted as an Zero/Ao NPC, but really she just shows up for an uneventful boss fight before dealing with the big boss lady herself. She’s a master swordswoman, and she’s serious to a fault, being obsessed with getting the job done right and impressing her master. She’s often clad in armor, but she does have a very cute set of casual clothes that you only see once in ToCS2, and it’s easily missable. She believes in her own righteousness, and considering her master’s general demeanour, she may actually believe that she and the rest of Ouroboros are doing the right thing. In any case, I think she’s a real cutie, and I have nothing wrong with serious girls. In fact, I tend to prefer them.

I’ve got big news for you all… Grace is cute. Wait, that’s not news at all, damn it. Anyway, Grace is your requisite reporter friend in Trails to Zero and Ao, and she starts off a bit more antagonistic than your good buddy Nial. She grows on you pretty quickly though, and she really didn’t mean anything by her early smear article on the SSS, considering she was an old friend of Guy Bannings. She’s excitable, endearing, and always looking for the next big story. She wants to win that fulitzer prize after all! She’s the model of a true reporter, hunting for the truth whenever and wherever it may lie. And considering all the deceit and secrets in crossbell, the world could use someone like her to uncover the truth. She’s good! I like her!

Schera is sort of the original Trails Cheesecake in the series, and to be honest, we really haven’t seen any other characters in the series with her skin tone so… where did she come from? We know she was a part of the Harvey circus and was a street rat before that but… yeah, only brown skinned girl in trails. I guess that adds to her allure and mystique, because her outfit works really well with her exotic appearance. She started the series as a C rank bracer, and after the Liberl Ark events, she moved up to a B rank, which is on the cusp of badass A rank bracer that only a few people have attained. She’s a heavy drinker like her friend Aina, which is again bad news for me, but she’s a caring woman to the people close to her, and she knows how to crack the whip on people she’s opposed to. She has a lot going on, and ends up being one of the more complex playable characters in the series, but she’s a good woman and a very good waifu. Just don’t get caught being naughty. Ho Ho Ho.

Enter Sharon, the uber maid extraordinaire. She’ll cook, clean, and even take of pesky monsters for you. If you’ve got a problem, Sharon will solve it with a smile on her face and a skip in her step. She’s the personal maid of the Reinford family, and as a maid her favourite pastime appears to be trolling Alisa, which I can wholeheartedly approve of. As i mentioned before, she is incredibly capable, and part of that is due to the fact that she is an enforcer of Ouroboros as well, The Hermit, the Severing Chains… but it doesn’t seem like Ouroboros minds the conflict of interest she has going on. In any case, she’s a beautiful woman who can do anything you want, what’s not to love?

So every girl from here on in makes for a very good waifu. Basically you'd love to have any of these girls on your side through thick and thin. The division between them, and the very top tiers is razor thin, and basically just down to my personal preferences. All of them are pretty great and worth cherishing.

Let’s kick off our very good waifus with a very good princess. Alfin is still a little young, but she ages up for Cold Steel 3, so whatever it’s fine. She’s precious and adorable, and for the daughter of an emperor, she’s very polite and well behaved without a hint of smug superiority. I imagine having an older brother like Olivert helps in that regard. She’s considered a national treasure, and with her general optimism and enthusiasm it’s not hard to see why. She has beautiful blonde hair, an incredible smile, and the royal red outfit looks good on her as well. She doesn’t get this high on looks alone though, she’s also a delightful troll, constantly teasing the Schwarzer Siblings and the rest of class 7 given the opportunities. The only negative I have with her is that she keeps trying to ship Rean and Elise, but maybe incest is not such a big deal in Zemuria.

And here is the last member of the Good Waifu squad. Lila is the personal maid and childhood friend of Mayor Maybelle. She’s got a beautiful if icy expression, but that just serves to make her even cuter. Despite her cold expression, she does care very deeply for her mayor, making she sure takes breaks at reasonable times not to overwork herself. Her backstory is kind of tragic, because she ended up separated from her parents during the hundred days war and losing her memories of them and everything else, including her old name. Luckily Maybelle and her father were able to take her in and give her a loving home, but she’s lost so much, and it’s sad. I just want to give her a hug and tell her it’ll be alright.

Carna is a cool lady, even if she is basically the Worf of the Trails series. If you want someone to get blindsided and owned in Trails, Carna is your girl. Well, that’s not entirely fair to her, because she does show why she’s a high ranked bracer throughout the game, she’s just not on the level of an Enforcer or anything. I think her outfit is kind of dumb, but she looks really good with that high ponytail. She’s very close to breaking into the next tier, but I think she comes just a bit short.

Continuing the “nice NPC” train, we’ve got Elliott’s older sister Fiona. She’s an excellent chef, she’s a musician, and she’s got gorgeous red hair, so she’s already winning. She’s very attached to her little brother, and runs the show in their household. She’s pretty sweet, and I kind of wish she had a larger role in the game so we could see her more. As it is, we only see one side of her. It’s a very good side, but not enough to put her over the top.

She doesn’t have much to her character other than being shipped with professor Makarov by his meddlesome niece Mint. I mean I like the arts, I think she’s cute, there’s really nothing wrong with her. She just sounds like a lovely woman to be with.
