AAI1-1: Turnabout Visitor

Have you ever thought, 'wow this is a substantial amount of blood'?

The angle of the bullet entering Faith's body is all wrong. Gumshoe had put the files back where they actually go - but if you didn't have that knowledge or forgot how it was originally... you would put the zeroes at the beginning. Gumshoe rearranges the files this way, and they prop up the body. It matches the lower abdominal wound now, plus makes the reversed bloody handprints make more sense.

Now that we've moved the body, we see that not only is the name 'Gumshoe' written on the files behind the body in blood, but a file is missing! Edgeworth fixates on the missing file while Gumshoe sweats, everyone in the room suspecting him of being the killer! Portsman jumps all over it.

Yeesh. Mr Edgeworth is going to have some substantial cleanup, plus likely floor board replacement. All the victims in this franchise taking time to neatly write killer names in blood. So nice of them.

What could it all mean? See you tomorrow!

They give you Logic on training wheels the first couple of times, which I appreciated. 'Thinking like other people' is not exactly one of my strong suits - now that I've said that, this sure is a weird franchise for me to enjoy.

Deduce is also a great function - you Examine and then point out the part of the item that doesn't make sense. In this case, we have a pistol that has fired one shot, into the victim... but there's another bullet hole in Mr Edgeworth's early prosecutor suit frame on the opposite wall! Therefore, another gun is in the mix somewhere. We also get the 'Eureka!' interjection from Edgeworth at the time of his deduction. I have seen this on various items of fan merch, and wondered where this came from, so that clears up the confusion.

Jacques Portsman busts in and bothers us, accusing both Mr Edgeworth and Det. Gumshoe in turn of killing Faith, our victim the detective, who's dead on the scene. He forces us away from the scene of the crime as he urges another officer to take some photos of him mourning with the body. I mean, I've seen self-absorbed fictional characters, but this is bordering on take selfies with the deceasedfrom Weird Al's 'Tacky'.

We find a secret safe in the wall behind said suit frame, and it's now no longer secret. >_> Gumshoe has kept the office spotless, so it's really obvious that the safe is undisturbed...but the number pad has been wiped clean of prints! Suspich!

Mr Edgeworth wonders if the motive was theft, and we rearrange the files that were carelessly pulled off the shelf during a struggle... We'll have to see what that reveals to us.

Genuinely curious what AAI is coded, SOJ is AA6. Ah well, I'll just call it AAI for now.

AAI-1: Turnabout Visitor

Someone gets murdered in Edgeworth's office! What! Why?!

Our trusty detective, Dick Gumshoe, is on the case!! Wow, this is really cute. I played hours and hours of AA just to get to this moment. You have the option of talking to Gumshoe when you want, which is what every AA game should have had. Would have made some of the lame moments in earlier games a lot better for me - "Hey, pal!"

The Logic function is a new one - as you make observations, you have to string them together in a way that makes sense, or suffer a penalty.

...is it just me, or is it completely adorable the way the sprites move? Gumshoe following Edgeworth around the room as though he couldn't conduct a conversation from anywhere in Edgeworth's unobstructed office.

Gumshoe wishes he could rest on Edgeworth's comfy couch, we find fresh flowers from Wendy Oldbag, who is still stalking Edgeworth... troubling. Edgeworth's teacup is broken, apparently the whole set is worth more than Gumshoe's monthly salary and can only be replaced in England. Dang. Makes me think of Wedgwood, but then... poor Gumshoe. That's only less than $200?

It's so tough to get used to the old-school gameplay. I was spoiled on the dialogue review option in Dual Destinies.

Gumshoe came in while Edgeworth was away and cleaned his office regularly. What. That's so sweet. Whaaaat. I can't handle this game.

I've collected some info - I'll use Logic without the training wheels next time. See you next week!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

We have a brief recess, get some info from DePlume and Dr Crab, and reconvene.

We press on every whirr, click and fweet to no avail. We decide to not pursue the cross-examination of Orla. We suggest that using recordings of Orla and Azura on the TV phone, Rimes could have manipulated Orla using that audio. We clarify that Orla cannot do more than 2 tricks at the same time, so we pick the song as being fake [Orla was supposedly doing the lifesaver trick and singing at the same time]. We point out that the walkie talkies issued to all Aquarium crew members can be used to broadcast to speakers inside the Aquarium. Rimes disses us, saying his walkie talkie is broken and there's no way to prove otherwise.

Upon examination, his walkie talkie has some strange teeth marks, not quite matching Orla, but matching the teeth marks Azura Summers' walkie talkie, carried as a memento by Shipley, would have received. We find out there were TWO ORCAS. One, named Ora, had a short tooth, compared to Orla, who has all her teeth intact. We blame Rimes for Shipley's death, and call in Sasha.

Sasha confirms that Ora, the first orca, and Orla, the second, are sisters. After Azura Summers' death last year, Ora was put down and Orla took over all her show duties. Phoenix objects before the Judge's ruling to point out the weird Ladder Fingerprints, showing that Rimes was trying to save Shipley when he fell... not kill him. Shipley's death was an accident, but Rimes was trying to get himself a guilty verdict because he felt bad about the situation.

Sasha Buckler is declared Not Guilty. Cue the confetti.

I guess Shipley's body was hidden in the Skull Rock, so when Sasha moved it in an attempt to sabotage the show she wasn't allowed to be in, she had no idea it contained Shipley's body. Rimes then manipulated Orla into performing the lifesaver trick in front of Ms DePlume.

Now that we all know the truth, Sasha will take time off until her heart condition improves, Ms DePlume will be on the Aquarium's side in her future writings, and Dr Crab reveals that the 'bribes' and his mysterious trips with Captain Shipley were to another aquarium, paying them to take care of Ora, the first orca, who had not been put down and was merely relocated.

We throw Orla a well-deserved fish, and Phoenix receives a surprise orca smooch!

We continue next time with Investigations! A big shout out to @colliding for offering up a copy of the game for me to purchase. Thanks so much.

I did buy SOJ during the store sale, so we will get to that after AAI and 2.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Rifle ate the matching charm somehow, we find this out when she's regurgitating food for Sniper while in Dr Crab's lab. We also find her feet are pink - from the fresh paint on the sign that Sasha handmade.

We break a couple Psyche Locks on Dr Crab and find out he's got an illegal monitoring system called TORPEDO for the animals at the Aquarium. Smaller animals have a sensor directly attached to them [e.g. Rifle] and larger animals have a sensor attached to their tanks [e.g. Orla].

The Center for Dangerous Animal Control has called for Orla to be euthanized. There's a lot of weirdness involving bribes, calendars, etc. Apollo calls us back and it sounds like the capsule we sent him to analyze is a sleeping pill, and that the Aquarium recently bought a large quantity of it. In direct violation of HIPAA regulations, Apollo has also found out that Azura was on the same heart medication as Sasha. To court!!

Dr Crab claims in his testimony that Orla was in the show pool while the orca pool was being cleaned. Our luminol photo results show that to be false. We claim that he was trying to drown Orla since she was a witness to the murder. However, he didn't rush to the tank because he didn't know. Blackquill tries to pin it on Sasha, who was the only one there cleaning the tank. Dr Crab finishes by returning the charm to us that he had retrieved from Rifle, stating it isn't his.

We call Marlon Rimes to the stand. Rimes tries to tell us what happened, but his memories are blending with his memories of Azura's death. Phoenix and Athena work hard to reduce his emotional noise. We open the charm and reveal a photo of Marlon and Azura - Marlon Rimes was her boyfriend!!

Marlon's transformation into 'pirate' version was truly bizarre. I liked him before. o_o

We suggest that Rimes was trying to kill Orla, but accidentally caused Shipley to fall to his death in the show pool. We know from the TORPEDO system that Rifle got fed but Orla didn't. How did that happen? Somehow, Rimes was positioned so he couldn't see Rifle wandering in and eating Orla's food.

We end up cross-examining Orla, because LET THE WHALE TAKE THE STAND.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

I guess Pearls found some weird upside-down prints on the show stage's side ladder. We send Apollo to get the giant pill from Orla's stomach analyzed.

We talk to Sasha in the Detention Center, she was supposed to clean the orca pool with Shipley, but she went in early because of the fight the night before, and he never showed. Sasha reveals that Orla can't do more than one trick at a time - but she was supposedly singing and doing the lifesaver trick? We hand over the prescription bag from Det. Fulbright, and it's Sasha's medication for her heart condition. Because of this over concern for Sasha's health, Shipley was going to leave her out of the new show. Sasha was unhappy while she was cleaning, so Orla spiked the volleyball and accidentally broke the octopus figure. Sasha said she deliberately tried to prevent the new show from going on without her by moving the large skull sculpture from the show stage to the orca pool.

Azura Summers, the late trainer from last year, taught Sasha how to train Orla. Azura always wore a charm from her boyfriend, who had a matching charm - Sasha ended up with this charm after her death, supposedly she has never met Azura's boyfriend. Captain Shipley kept Azura's sword-shaped walkie talkie as a keepsake, but it wasn't found on his body when he died. This is strange, as Sasha remembers speaking to him on it.

Sasha is so nervous that Dr Crab is going to euthanize Orla. He was never into euthanizing before, but since Summers' death, he's been in favor of it.

I played the rest of this investigation, so I'll write up the rest later. Thanks!

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Apparently the Center for Dangerous Animal Control suggested Orla be put down after the incident in which last year's trainer died. Shipley refused, and maybe he's been paying them off to keep Orla around? DePlume also thinks Dr Crab is shifty. Probably mutual.

We pick up Pearls at the Agency so she can help us do some 'forensicking' and tell Apollo to shuffle some papers idk

Not gonna lie to you, I love how little Apollo is in this case. After putting me through his first game, this is the proper reward I deserved.

Orla's at the bottom of the pool and it's split, some water and some dry. Pearls starts spraying the luminol - we find some blood residue on the top of a large, pointy skull sculpture. There are also a couple spots of blood on Orla herself! All of a sudden, Orla ain't doin' too hot and you call for Dr Crab. He directs you on how to lift Orla out of the water using the stretcher and hoist combo. Dr Crab clears out her stomach - a few fish, a few fish skeletons, and a sizable, curious-looking pill. Dr Crab goes to seek additional help after assuring Pearls that the luminol didn't endanger the whale [she was worried].

Orla's right as rain again, so we put her back in the water and start filling up the pool.

We talk to Marlon Rimes for a little bit - apparently the whale stretcher can be moved to the show stage but must be operated from the switch in the orca room. Marlon is pretty sure Sasha's innocent, but isn't sure about Orla. He describes a situation just days ago where Orla attacked Sasha, but we're pretty sure it was the lifesaver trick? ...Or was it?

We admire a sign that Sasha made for the new show - it features a painting of the skull sculpture that we found blood residue on earlier. We mention this and Rimes is surprised that it's at the bottom of the orca pool, since it's supposed to be a prop for the new show. I guess Sasha was fighting with the Captain because she heard a rumor that she wouldn't be in the new show.

Sasha very carefully made this new sign... but I noticed it definitely didn't escape the walking path of at least a couple of free-range penguins. Wonder when that's gonna come up.

If you guys haven't seen the video clips of Wellington the rockhopper penguin from the Shedd Aquarium here in Chicago, treat yourselves. They filmed him last year wandering around the aquarium looking at all the different signs and exhibits. He is the same age as I am [33] and so far has lived about 3x as long as the average rockhopper penguin.

What else will we find at the show stage? See you tomorrow!

What's your overall work experience been so far?

All retail... as cashier, cart pusher, bank teller, pizza delivery, key holder / shift supervisor.

What would you like to do? Any dream jobs or careers?

Nope. Head empty no thoughts. Just wanna get outta customer service, I'm about ready to strangle someone.

Anything you wanna try for a while?

Idk. The only thing I've ever really considered is maybe either like vendor, that would go to different stores to just stock or make deliveries or something? I've thought about either a delivery guy like when we get beer or soda deliveries at work or as the sales person who goes around and orders all the stuff for the delivery. But idk if that's a viable career path and idk if I'd like it enough to move up. I just dunno, I hate this shit.

What does an ideal work environment look like for you?

No clue other than, no more dealing with customers plz.

Just felt like tagging along on this topic since it felt so relevant to me. Mostly just answered your little survey for myself but *shrug*

It certainly sounds like you've been on the 'front lines' for some time. Yeah, it's likely time to move on. I recommend trying temping, they do some of the searching for you, and if the company likes your work, they'll consider keeping you on. You have to make sure the job fits for you too, not just for the company. If they don't, you're on to the next assignment and you're consistently being paid.

Stocking/delivering is good, if you have a handle on demand you may want to pay attention to people who are analyzing trends for purchasing, etc. while you try that. Go to the office and get to know who you report to, who they report to, what the situation is like there. If they like you and find you dependable, you'll be better positioned to apply for positions internally as they open up. It's important to get your foot in the door.

After a certain point once you leave generic customer service [retail/food service/etc.], your more recent work experience will be more important than your early days. Some hope!

Make sure all the relevant non-work people in your life know that you're looking, volunteer for something you care about in your downtime if you have some - that can help build connections that help the search. After all, if you're putting in a good effort when you're not even getting paid, you're probably even better when properly remunerated!

Other tips include learning everyone's name and greeting them regularly/once a day by name. Principle of reciprocity, people will want to remember your name and respond in kind - this will make you and what you do more visible at work, with the added bonus of making you seem personable and approachable.

Start listing out all the skills you've acquired in your recent jobs, and frame them as positively as possible even if you didn't like the tasks themselves. Think about the effect on your workspace, your coworkers, your clients, and yourself -e.g. 'mopping up the gross mess some customer made in aisle 4' is 'noticing and fixing a safety issue in the service of maintaining a clean and safe facility'.

You probably knew a lot of this stuff, so I hope you enjoyed all that singing to the choir. One more thing - I do recommend Andrew LaCivita, a squirrelly little career coach on YouTube - his videos have been invaluable to me. He covers a lot of topics related to job searching and job interviewing, the dreaded 'tell me about yourself', 'where do you see yourself in 5 years' and ultimately, pay negotiation. His 4 sentence cover letter video changed my search for the better. It sounds wild, but if you can tell a hiring manager that 'you're looking for [this] and I am [this]' in a slim paragraph, they're way more likely to get in touch ASAP and get the ball rolling.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

We investigate at the Pub O'Danger, and the door that was closed before is open. We go inside and find Dr. Herman Crab, resident veterinarian for the Shipshape Aquarium! He has a very Dr-House-as-played-by-Hugh-Grant vibe. Dr Crab's hair is wild and unruly, and it turns out a baby penguin lives in it, thinking it's a nest. The baby is named Sniper and belongs to Rifle, although it's imprinted on Dr Crab to the point where it never leaves his hair. It's so adorable.

The good Doctor was not at the aquarium yesterday. He does have some info that the argument between the Captain and Sasha happened late the night before the murder, in the Aqua Tunnel. We're supposed to bring Rifle to him somehow.

We run into Norma DePlume as we're in the Aqua Tunnel trying to find Rifle. She tells us how the Captain died one year to the day after the previous trainer was killed, the basis for DePlume's book The Killer Killer Whale. We get into a weird spat about the Swashbuckler Spectacular theme song - DePlume claims it was barbaric, full of references to pillaging and living high on the spoils. Athena insists it was fun and uplifting. Turns out there are two different songs. We play the happy version from our Court Record and DePlume is unnerved. She's never heard this song before, and it's certainly not the old one they were singing a year ago!

DePlume talks about wanting to investigate the Center for Dangerous Animal Control... We'll have to ask about how she plans to do that. See you next week!

Fruits Basket!

Tag team options:
2 - Uotani "Uo" Arisa and Hanajima "Hana" Saki, managed by Honda "Riceball" Tohru
3 - Sohma "Gure" Shigure, Sohma "Tori" Hatori, and Sohma "Aya" Ayame, managed by Honda "Riceball" Tohru OR Sohma "God" Akito

Individual options:
Sohma "Rat" Yuki - highly technical
Sohma "Cat" Kyo - plenty of aerials and acrobatics
Sohma "Black Haru" Hatsuharu - no-holds-barred brawler, basically

As @Maniac64 said, Shigure is a good support role too, so if you need management or announcing or something, he's an option.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed

Sasha talks about how Orla made a noise, and DePlume screamed, and she couldn't tell you which happened first, but she saw the Captain in the middle of all the stuff strewn about. We find out that Captain Shipley was already dead because Orla pushed him up to the surface and knocked down the objects to draw attention to him. There is a red scarf that fell over his neck that would not have been still on the body had he been wearing it prior to being underwater, and fell at the same time as the coins.

We posit that Captain Shipley fell to his death while the pool was empty, then the real perpetrator used the 'life saver' whistle signal to incriminate Orla. Det. Fulbright gives us an UPDATED AUTOPSY REPORT which matches our situation. Blackquill oddly doesn't object, and Orla Shipley is declared... Not Guilty.

However, this doesn't leave Sasha in good standing, so although we won this case, Phoenix and Athena are bummed out. They decide to look into evidence to help prove Sasha's innocence.

We quiz Det. Fulbright. Apparently Sasha and the Captain were the only ones with access to the orca room via security cards, Sasha was cleaning the room from 3-6AM, she had a fight with the Captain that morning, and no one saw the Captain after that... not promising.

Det. Fulbright mentions that Sasha's questioning is still happening, but that he told the guy to take it easy on her. Then he weirdly gives us some prescription medication to give to Sasha?? This is so strange.

We'll have to kill a little time by poking around until we can talk to our client. See you tomorrow!

Instrumental listener here. Film scores, anime or videogame OSTs are my picks. Been listening to a lot of Ace Attorney and House in Fata Morgana recently.

Nanami is great, but he also doesn't exactly strike me as the kind of person one should want to be lol

I try to distinguish between characters I'm attracted to and characters I admire.

He's good at what he does, well-dressed, tall, no-nonsense attitude. He probably doesn't appeal to everyone, even in-universe, but that doesn't change how he operates. As someone who has wasted too much time fruitlessly chasing the idea of being liked by as many people as possible, it's refreshing to see a fictional character not do that.

Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed\

We call out Rimes' testimony that he was in the staff room when the incident occurred. He is covering for the fact that he ran into Pearls in the food prep room and their Rifle-the-penguin-themed gift shop calendars got switched in the confusion.

Rimes admits he didn't hear the noise in the orca room himself, but he heard about it from... Sasha Buckler. Snitches get stitches, my dude. Plus, as her trainer, she wouldn't want to incriminate Orla...would she? Sasha's the one who asked for our help in the first place!!

We will call Sasha Buckler to the stand after a 20 minute recess. Rimes explains that he wanted to testify instead of Sasha, so he was trying to cover it up so she wouldn't have to testify. Awkward. Not the sort of cooperation you need from your client.

Rimes explains that he found the calendar that was in his possession in the nap room and suspects it was probably Sasha's. With that 7am note about meeting the captain by the orca pool, it seemed incriminating.

We'll have to see more tomorrow. See you then!
