I liked Prancing Dad until I found out what the chorus was actually chanting. Then I was so disgusted that I swore I'd never listen to it again. If you like the song, trust me, you do not want to look up the lyrics. They'll most likely ruin it for you.

Just as a bit of trivia, in case you didn't already know, The Black Mages are Nobuo Uematsu's personal rock band, and they play exclusively covers of his Final Fantasy songs. He's on the keyboard.

It's a shame you don't like Dancing Mad; it's one of my favorite songs of all time. Have you at least heard The Black Mages' version of it? It's almost a 1:1 cover, and is basically a straight upgrade in fidelity. I still like the original a ton, but I think their version is objectively better.

I was just throwing Kindred out there as an aside, but it's a good song, so here's a link for your convenience:

For the full effect, I recommend listening to it with headphones, in the dark.

Piano Opera Final Fantasy IV/V/VI Deluxe - My Home, Sweet Home: Music Box Version: 80 points. Its a very curious type of song, one where I can never place what Im feeling or why, but its quite...quite intriguing and single-handedly justifies going through everything on the Deluxe Album to find it.
My Home, Sweet Home is among my favorite FF songs of all time, but I haven't heard this version yet. I'm definitely going to have to listen to that.

The way he words it does sound like an "I'm taking my ball and leaving" situation but it seems like he's got perfectly legitimate beef, so it's a "You screwed me, so I'm not gonna put my game on your dying console" situation.
It's not a console, and it's not exactly dying, so it's not really that situation either.

But it's bizarre that Google would do this. If they just wanted to break ties with him for whatever reason, they could do a lot more easily and a lot less evilly by just saying so, instead of locking the guy's account and refusing to respond.

Chronology - Fight or Flight: Another low 50s song. Its fine, but by this point in the album, you kinda know what youre getting and it doesnt really do much to differentiate itself from the other songs.
I'd say that same sentence could easily be said about the Chrono Symphonic album, with one notable exception: To Far Away Times, the last track on the album. This one includes some quite beautiful lyrics, in Japanese and English. It's not pixietricks' best vocal performance - she's much better on, say, Kindred - but the vocals aren't bad by any means at all, and the fact that they exist make it the standout track on the album.

The main appeal of the Mother series is that they're quirky, offbeat RPGs with atypical plot elements, visuals, settings, and characters. I'll say that they're definitely not for everyone, which is why they're often considered cult classics.
Beneath the bright pastel colors and childish shenanigans are some very mature themes, especially in Mother 3. I think that adds a layer of depth that makes people who already like the games appreciate them that much more, but I don't think that those elements alone will make a convert out of someone who didn't already appreciate them. But maybe it will, I dunno. Just my opinion.

Missed a performer there.
The lyrics make more sense in the context of the games, though. It's not a happy-go-lucky optimistic song just for the sake of it; it's deeply meaningful to the plots of the games, and it's covering some very dark circumstances. The end result is hope and optimism, but there's some dark irony along the way. This video explains it really well, if you're interested (MAJOR spoilers for all three games in the series!):

And to answer the topic title question, I made the board in September of 2016.

I just think that the one strip per letter of the alphabet deal is too gimmicky and a Top X strips of all time would be more meaningful.
Well, as I said in the forum thread that I linked:
For #500, what I wanted to do was an unofficial sequel to #100, The Comic Alphabet, but with just syndicated newspaper comic strips (probably just US/UK strips).
See, it's already been done before: https://www.mezzacotta.net/itoons/?comic=100

Also, doing a "Top X strips of all time" wouldn't really be a comic. That sort of thing would be better handled as an actual list/article, where you can go into detail about why each strip was important and stuff.
Doing it this way is paying homage to the traditional children's alphabet books that many people grew up with, while also being interesting to look at in its own right.
But that's just my opinion, and I appreciate you offering yours.

One gimmick that #100 did that I'm not doing is finding a panel from the strip in question where the dialogue starts with the same letter. My strip is going to just be title panels (probably from Sundays) that have the strip's name.

Eh, lets try one song from that Chrono Trigger Jazz album that Kelp posted earlier.
OC Jazz Collective - Times Seal (12,000 B.C.): 51 points. Its pleasant, but Im not raving about it.
I'm not a huge fan of either CT album, TBH, though I prefer the jazz one. The best song on the jazz album, IMO, is Dream of Green.
Those are just the two free CT albums; there are others out there, like Chronotorious by The Bad Dudes.

The saxophonist for the OC Jazz Collective is Anthony Lofton, another one of my favorite VGM-focused jazz musicians. I haven't been able to decide whether I prefer him over insaneintherain or not.
Here are some other songs that he plays sax on:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkjPahn_vMI

This third song is off of the Hybridism album, by Joshua Morse, Anthony Lofton, and Posu Yan, which arranged several tracks from Ragnarok Online. It's one of my favorite albums, particularly the tracks Samurai Discotheque and Ancient Groover. You can find most of the individual songs on YouTube or OverClocked Remix, but here's the album:

Yeah, I hemmed and hawed between using "iconic," "most important," and a few other adjectives. But I think "definitive" works well for what I'm trying to accomplish.

Jakyl25 posted...
I would lean toward Far Side, because it changed the comics page to an extent that I doubt Family Circus ever did
This is probably true, but that's only within the last few decades. As I said in that topic, the problem is that there are many iconic strips from older generations. What about Flash Gordon? (BTW, there was a typo in my OP. Wikipedia says it was in 130 newspapers, not 100.) @Ashethan brought up The Far Side selling more calendars than The Family Circus selling collections, but if we look at media beyond the strip itself, Flash Gordon is more successful than those two put together. It had multiple movies, live-action tv shows, animated shows, radio plays, stage plays, video and tabletop games, novels, and even a ride at the World's Fair. But almost all of that was well before (I'm betting) most of the users on this board were born, and the property isn't really well-known today.

Which is the most definitive comic strip of these options?

I'm a regular contributor to Mezzacotta's Square Root of Minus Garfield and iToons webcomics (links in my signature). iToons is approaching its 500th strip, and I've been working on something special to commemorate the number. The idea to represent each letter of the alphabet with a newspaper comic strip (just US/UK ones) that starts with that letter. I've made a thread on Mezzacotta that goes into it in a bit more detail: https://www.irregularwebcomic.net/draakslair/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=12316

Some strips are more obvious choices than others. Peanuts is obviously going to be P, Garfield is obviously going to be G. Both are worldwide phenomena whose popularity are undeniable. My problem is, many letters have quite a few notable comic strips, any of which could make it into iToons #500. And I can't decide how to rank them against each other. I thought it might be worth coming up with a formula that takes into account peak popularity, cultural impact, longevity, newspaper distribution, etc., but I have no idea how to make one that'd be fair.
For example, look at the first two contenders below. The Far Side had a higher peak popularity, but The Family Circus has been around for over 4 times as long. The Far Side is often considered one of the funniest strips of all time, while The Family Circus has been unfunny for decades. Both have had a significant impact on American culture, in their own way. How do you compare those?

My ultimate goal is to be able to say, "G is for Garfield," in the same way that you'd put in a children's alphabet book, "A is for Apple." Basically, a more-or-less definitive answer, one that no one can argue with. Putting "A is for Asbestos" in a children's alphabet book is technically accurate, but there were definitely better options. See what I mean?

Anyway, I'm looking for help. Each of the strips in this poll have their own claim to fame, and I can't decide which one to use.

The Contenders:
  1. The Family Circus: Published for 61 years, appeared in 1500 newspapers
  2. The Far Side: Published for 15 years, appeared in 1900 newspapers
  3. Flash Gordon: Published for 69 years. The only figure I can find says it was published in 100 newspapers, but that it was read by 50 million people, because this was back when there were fewer newspapers and they were much bigger and higher-quality (well, the comics pages at least were)
  4. For Better or For Worse: Published for 29 years, appeared in 2000 newspapers
  5. Foxtrot: Published for 33 years, appeared in 1200 newspapers
  6. Frank and Ernest: Published for 49 years, appeared in 1200 newspapers
  7. Funky Winkerbean: Published for 49 years, appeared in 400 newspapers
Numbers all taken from Wikipedia. If anyone knows of a better source, I'd love to have it.

The winner of this poll won't automatically be the one I end up using, but will definitely influence the final decision. I'm mostly looking to spark discussion and get some feedback about the whole thing. Please leave a comment with your thoughts.

I'd love to listen to 3 hours of Chrono Trigger remixes, but I don't like having them all in one, 3-hour video. I'd much rather listen to the individual tracks. But I see how people could prefer it that way.

Raetsel_Lapin posted...
And the only VGM remix albums Ive ever heard are the two nominated this topic. Like I said during sign-ups, its not a category I listen to much & I dont listen to many albums in general. This topic alone probably gave me more non-soundtrack albums than Ive listened to in my entire life.
Well, if you're interested, OverClocked ReMix has over 100 albums available, most of them remixing the entirety or highlights of a single game's soundtrack, and others remixing songs from various games for whatever reason:
https://ocremix.org/albums/?&offset=0&sort=nameasc

Chrono Trigger has had two different albums for it, one a jazz album, and the other a symphonic orchestra album:
https://ocremix.org/album/76/chronology-a-jazz-tribute-to-chrono-trigger
https://ocremix.org/album/7/chrono-trigger-chrono-symphonic

My personal favorite OCR album is Final Fantasy VI: Balance and Ruin:
https://ocremix.org/album/46/final-fantasy-vi-balance-and-ruin
But there are other albums I really like, too.

One of my highlights from FFVI:BaR is The Impresario, by Jake "virt" Kaufman, which remixes much of the music from the game's opera scene. It uses some of the lyrics from the game, but also adds new ones, and thematically the lyrics remind me of West Side Story. However, the style of the song is extremely reminiscent of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. It's a wild trip to listen to.

Uh, yeah, they're joke songs. Shnab even says in the description for Green Hell zone:

I love tails drowning
Not only is he spelling it wrong, he says that the first Sonic game was Sonic Advance 2. He's clearly trolling. =P

That being said, I agree that people could still enjoy the songs. You can come up with something that someone will like even when you're intentionally trying to be bad. If I slapped some paint onto a canvas and snuck it into a museum of modern art, there would be some people in there who unironically appreciated it. The "tone deaf" comment was more of a joke and wasn't intended to be a direct insult towards anyone's musical tastes.
