Guacamelee 2! (XB1)

I haven't played the first one since like 2014, but I want to say that this was better in virtually every way except for pacing because some of those areas went on forever.

New Super Lucky's Tale (XB1)

I'm trying to think of all the games that I have gone through multiple times from what I guess is now last gen. I can only recall Ori and the Blind Forest, Minit, AER: Memories of Old, the Princess Remedy games, and...this. Five games that I hold in very high regard, and one that I think is serviceable. The main reason I wanted to go through it again is that the New version had all the DLC included, and I guess that all or most of the levels were altered. I also just learned that the original version did not have a fully rotatable camera. I only beat it last year, and I guess I totally forgot about that. This isn't exactly a memorable game, so I guess that it understandable.

Oh, you are probably referring to The Unfinished Swan and the thatgamecompany titles. Sony used to fund the latter before that went independent while I believe Sony paid for exclusivity for the former.

Outer Wilds (XB1)

I started playing this on May 30th, 2019, or at least I think that is the day it landed on Game Pass. There were time where I got heavily into it made great progress filling out the the ship log. There were also times where I just had no idea where to go to move things forward. There was also a stretch or two of 3-5 months where I didn't pick up the game at all. At one point, I hit a wall that I had assumed I would never get past (avoiding all those angler fish on Dark Bramble when going down the rabbit hole following the distress signal). Just a few days ago, I tried again, and somehow things worked out. This prompted me to give it a final push to finish the game, and I just accomplished that. There are a few things that I thought could be alterted, implemented, or left out entirely that I think would make it a better experience, but it definitely is a rewarding one.

Monster World IV (360)

Man, I can't imagine playing this without save states because the spacing between save spots and health machines is awful. Anyway, I was going through some of the older Monster World games, and none held my interest for long except this one. Pretty neat for its time, though it could stand to shorten its dungeons a bit.

Xeno Crisis (XB1)

It took me four runs, including one where they just killed me without allowing me to fight the final boss for whatever reason. I also had no idea that the default difficulty was on hard. Anyway, this is a cool retro-based arena shooter that was fun to play for the day.

Coffee Talk (XB1)

In some regards, I like this more than VA-11 HALL-A. It has excellent pacing, the drink preparation is much more fun, and having virtually every character interact with one another enhances the macro and micro plotlines. While it took me weeks, maybe even months to finish VA-11 HALL-A, I finished this within three days.

It's repetitive and shallow, but I can't help but have fun going around galaxies/solar systems/whatever trying to "save humanity" with this dopey robot that I gave a potbelly, chainsaws for arms, high heels, and a pumpkin head.

Gears of War 4 (XB1)

It's kind of tame, especially in scope, compared to earlier entries, but it definitely had some high-octane unique segments and tense fights. I can just never get into its multiplayer though, at least the standard stuff. Maybe I should try Horde.

Night Call (XB1)

Honestly, while the final confrontation with each case's killer was tense, I feel like the game would have been better off not having the murder investigation part at all and just have it be basically a slice-of-life taxi service game. I had planned on getting every character as a passenger, but I just couldn't get the final eight or so characters to show up in free roam.

Grim Fandango (XB1)

There's a lot to complain about this game, including the typical point-and-click adventure moon logic, many of the better characters being underutilized or poorly utilized, and a plot that never really takes off after a promising start, yet I have always loved it and am glad it came to Game Pass for me to replay.

Darksiders III (XB1)

It's really hard to compare the games since they each approach design, structure, and combat so differently, but after a sluggish start, I ended up really liking this a lot. I think they did an excellent job with the powers, and I was especially impressed with the multiple ways you could tackle underwater segments.

Deep Ones (PS4)

It is supposed to be an homage to ZX Spectrum games. I never played the system, so I wouldn't know, but the graphics style and setting were what got me to buy it. I wanted to like this more than I did, but combat and especially boss fights really had no place in this game. I think it would have turned out great if it is simply a platformer.

Unravel (PS4)

I knew it was a physics platformer, but I was surprised at how much physics were involved. It definitely had its fair share of frustrating segments as a result, but overall I enjoyed the game.

Voodoo Vince Remastered (XB1)

Aside from the second-to-last level, I had quite a bit of fun with this. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of gameplay/level variety and how most of it worked.

Batman: Arkham Knight (XB1)

This was one of the first games that I bought for XB1...only for me to not play it for nearly five years.

I think I should stop looking at public perception of games before I play them. Just like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Arkham Knight is so much better than I thought it was going to be, and it honestly might be my favorite of the trilogy. Gotham City has excellent scale and fun/ease to move around, something that I felt Arkham City struggled with. It felt like the complete Batman experience it bills itself to be with expanded gadgets, improved combat across the board, and it felt like something more akin to an elongated Batman movie than the previous Rocksteady games. I had almost no issues with the Batmobile/Bat-Tank other than the occasional camera issue with the former and generally loved the Bat-Tank segments.

I do wish they went back to the Arkham Asylum way of Riddler stuff (both in types of content and quantity), but I ultimately don't have too much to complain about.

Yoshi's Crafted World (Switch)

The boss fights were surprisingly quite fun, and they went all out on the paper craft stuff, but I can't help but feel disappointed with the game in general. Woolly World is one of my favorite Wii U games, but of the like four Switch games that I have beaten, this is easily my least favorite. The main reason is because the level design is just so vanilla, like they decided to look toward Kirby instead of previous Yoshi games.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden (XB1)

I've been playing this and the previous game off-and-on for months now but finally made the push to finish them.

I at first struggled with this game until I truly committed to a stealthy approach, and damn if that isn't the way to go. I haven't played a ton of turn-based tactics games in my lifetime, but this is definitely one of the better ones with its flexibility, deceptive depth, and level design. It's not a funny game, but I laughed and chuckled quite a bit with their confusion of objects and stuff from our time.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (XB1)

Looks fantastic, I liked its stealth mechanics, and the vocal performances were great. I never truly got a handle on the sling though, and while I can accept how miserable the first few chapters to establish the grim and dour tone for the rest of the game, there were parts that were just unnecessarily cruel that just depress me. It's definitely a good game, but just know that you will be experiencing a lot of awful things.

Duke Dashington Remastered (PC)

Its movement is ripped straight out of Wario Land, but you can only move via dash in four directions in about 150 micro levels. It is nothing special but competent.

AtmaSphere (PC)

This isn't a long game (about three hours across 30 levels), but it took me over a year to beat it because I liked to play it in little spurts until I decided to power through it earlier.

It's a cool physics-based, ball-rolling game that can have some humorous, jarring in-level music changes from what is a pool of royalty-free music.
