Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (2004) and American Wasteland (2005) System: PS2 Played with: my little sister I got into the Tony Hawk series a little late, not playing it until the Undergrounds came out for PS2, but I loved it immediately. It didn't feel like a sports game as much as it felt like an adventure game where you could never really stop moving much, kinda like the 3D Sonic games. While later I did go back and try out the Pro Skaters (and I'm in fact currently playing through the remake) the much goofier and over-the-top later entries will also hold a special place in my heart, with their goofy and over-the-top characters and stages and challenges. The Underground games were basically Tony Hawk mixed with Jackass, while American Wasteland was its own teen movie story, and both were a blast. One of my best memories of the game was playing them with my sister. I could always beat her in terms of score/comboes, but things like tag and grafitti modes were pretty much fair game, and we had a blast jamming to the distinct hip-hop/punk/ska mix in the background. Unreal Tournament (1999), Counter-Strike (2000) & Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) System: The computers at my high school Played with: the other students in my electronics class I have no conceivable way of differentiating these three experiences in my head, because to me, they were all experience. In high school, I took two semesters of Electronics (I and II). The class had a desktop computer for each student (probably around 15 in the class) that were necessary for the bulk of the work. Well, the teacher of the class was pretty laid back, and had a rule that if you finish all the work for a given class, you can play a game on the computer until the bell rings (which, if we were lucky, was about 10 minutes). I was one of the brighter students in the class, which meant I was typically one of the first onto the computers to grab weapons and find good sniper spots on our LAN games. At first it was just UT, which was basically just a race to see who could get the rocket launcher, then eventually CS became the go-to game, with easy-to-join matches and different team-based game modes. Halo matches consisted almost entirely of sniper shootouts from opposite sides of Blood Gulch, with at least one person always tried to run over people with the Warthog. LittleBigPlanet 2 (2011) System: PS3 Played with: my girlfriend There will be a handful of games on this ranking I played with my girlfriend, mostly fun, goofy platformers (just missing the list was Rayman Legends, which we enjoyed but never finished). Consider this ranking a little all-inclusive of the LBP series, because we played all 3 together (I don't think we ever finished 3 though). 2 was just by far the most fun and most memorable, expanding on everything 2 did with new, memorable gadgets, worlds and side characters. We probably spent as much time playing the Basketball minigame as we did with the rest of the game combined, and it was so fun it could've been a whole game on its own and I wouldn't have complained (it was like normal basketball, except with the ability to also pick up and throw other players as well as the ball, leading to hilarious chaos). I'm confused. Holding Out For A Hero had 4 noms and These Dreams by Heart only had 2. Unless I just can't count.It turns out that I am the one who cannot count. 2 of the HOfaH nominations were listed as "Bonnie Taylor" and 2 were "Bonnie Tyler" and in my head I somehow combined them to make it just 2 nominations for the song. By all means it should've gotten into the poll, and I apologize for that.

During my dad's last 2 or so years, he got very into the game. Unlike my mom, he was a big fan of games, but he worked two jobs to afford a shabby 3rd floor apartment in the city and didn't have the time or the money to keep up with gaming as a real hobby. Except with WoW. When my dad got into an interest, he really got into it. With Harry Potter, he owned a copy of every book and got me a copy as well, all in hardback. We saw every movie in theaters together, ending with the 5th. He was a regular on forums and would enthusiastically relay fan theories to me. With WoW, he was the same way, knowing what weapons to go for and what quests were best and would get his friends to give me free gold to help me start a character of my own. For a while, I became obsessed too. When I visited him, we would spend much of the weekend taking turns playing on his desktop PC (which he used almost exclusively for WoW). I had never played an MMO before; the interaction with other players, the massive open world, it was all just wild for a young 2000s teen to take in for the first time, and I loved it. My dad died in 2008, when I was 15. I remember being the one to cancel his WoW account. I remember writing the reason for cancelling the account. I don't remember what happened to that old computer. The Sega Genesis was probably my first system (my dad had an NES I didn't use much and I eventually had a Game Boy). On that Genesis, I had an arcade classic game with Pong/Centipede/Galaga, Aladdin, a TMNT game I liked but that usually didn't work, and The Jungle Book. For whatever reason, of everything on that system, the thing I remember the most is taking turns playing the first level of The Jungle Book over and over because I was like 5 and terrible at video games. The boss at the end of the first level was Kaa the snake, who was a pain to take on. The game itself was probably not very good! I vaguely recall it as being a DKC-like platformer where you mostly jump over things traversing the jungle, but beyond that it's mostly a blur; it makes this list solely for being probably the only time I've ever played video games with my mom, who since then hasn't cared for them. Crash Team Racing (1999, 2019) Systems: PS1, PS4 Played with: My mom's friends' kids, my gf, random strangers online My memories of the original Crash Team Racing are vague, but all positive. I never owned a PS1, but every once in a while when I was little, my mom would take me to visit her friend's house (who occasionally served as my babysitter) and while I was never friends with her kids by any stretch, I did play a decent bit of Crash Team Racing with them. I don't remember much aside from maining Tiny Tiger and having a blast endlessly rushing around N. Sanity Beach. Jump 20 years later and CTR:NF is just everything I remember it being and so much more. It's more than I or any other CTR fan ever could've hoped for, with much, much, much more in terms of characters, tracks, content and polish.
