I did also read Christine and I'd agree that the characters are slimmed down a good bit from the book, and yeah you find out a lot less about Christine and why the car is significant. But I think the movie largely makes up for it by having the visual thrill aspect the book doesn't, which is pretty essential for a story like this

1. Reagan
Source: Killer Mike
Villain: Ronald Reagan (and the US government as a whole)
Nominator: Bane_of_Despair (eliminated)

https://youtu.be/6lIqNjC1RKU

Villainy: 10
Characterization: 10
Melody: 10
Total: 30/30

"But thanks to Reaganomics, prison turned to profits / 'Cause free labor's the cornerstone of US economics / 'Cause slavery was abolished, unless you are in prison / You think I am bullshittin', then read the 13th Amendment / Involuntary servitude and slavery it prohibits / That's why they givin' drug offenders time in double digits"

Just like last contest, we ended up with exactly one song to hit a perfect score. I mentioned before, the evil that isn't fictional but is actually happening always feels just a little more evil because it hits so close to home. And no song hit close to home the way Reagan does. This song makes Reagan out as a pretty obvious villain through his foreign policy and the long-term effect his administration's action had (and over a decade after the release of this song, still having). But he also notes that Reagan was above all things an actor, serving as the face of nearly unfathomable corruption in the government.

I don't want to get too into the weeds here, because if people wanted to be in the politics topic they would be, but shit like widespread discriminatory police brutality that was ramped up to startling numbers by Reagan's "war on drugs" that is still happening four decades later and the intentional long-term imprisonments for minor crimes in order to maintain modern day slavery practices under the guise of justice are objectively things that are happening. In terms of the sheer number of lives ruined or worse, Reagan is up there with the worst of the worst on this list, especially when, as Killer Mike suggests, you acknowledge that the corruption runs much deeper than just Reagan.

And Mike himself absolutely kills it here. I mean, the punctuality of the vocals, the flow, the beat, the buildup, the outro -- the cutoff of the instrumentals for the line "I'm glad Reagan dead." I mean, this is Killer Mike at his best. Including Reagan's actual, direct lies in between the verses works incredibly well and only emphasizes the hatred coming through in Killer Mike's lyrics.

The hardest aspect to rate this on was characterization, because it's admittedly only doing so much to characterize Reagan himself. But the lengths gone to to characterize the situation is what I think utlimately justifies the placement. We hear not just who Reagan is and why he's a villain, but his policies (both in the US and international), why they were put in place, their long-term effects, how the corruption continues to outlive Reagan, and even reflection on how rap and even Mike himself is complicit in allowing the situation to get as bad as it has. I can see this being a winner not everyone would agree with, but the more I thought about it over the time, the more I think this portrayal of Reagan as a way to both literally and symbolically represenent an all-encompassing type of terror makes for a surprisingly perfect villain song.

2. Night Surgeon
Source: Repo: The Genetic Opera
Villain: Nathan (and Rotti, Luigi & Pavi)
Nominator: FFDragon (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wwZ814rSIA

Villainy: 9
Characterization: 10
Melody: 10
Total: 29/30

Cause the claims medic gives no anesthetic
90 days delinquent gets you repo treatment
I'm the masked horror on your street corner
Make your momma mourn you

Fun fact: Repo the Genetic Opera is my sister's favorite movie! Night that I ever need the excuse to watch it, as I absolutely love it too. I mentioned before that I'm a sucker for a good horror musical, and Repo! just presses every button for me; it's dark, it's campy and it has a fantastic soundtrack start to finish that feels just as at home on a Halloween playlist as it does on a theatrical musical playlist. Gold was nominated last year for Rotti, which is a decent enough song (and Rotti's the main antagonist, so it makes sense). But Nathan, the night surgeon, is the titular Repo Man.

This song has some strong parallels with The Spider and the Lamps and a few other nominations, where we see a few other characters encouraging the protagonist/antagonist to do bad. But I think what makes this one so interesting is that for one, everyone here is a villain. You see Rotti appear here with his sons, Luigi and Pavi, all wanting him to act as the repo man on their company's behalf. Then you have Nathan, the only character here with even an ounce of compassion or empathy. It really serves as the villain song for all of them. You get Rotti's manipulation, Luigi's violence, Pavi's chaotic nature.

For two, you get to see Nathan actively make the decision to be the villain here. He is of course yet another tragic figure, dealing with the regret suffered due to the loss of his wife, Marni, which he thinks is his fault. In reality, it too is a manipulation of Rotti. He does lose a point in villainy because he does have compassion for his daughter and his late wife, but his compassion ends there. While he wasn't the one to kill Marni, he did kill everyone aside from Marni, and as his voice changes back into the voice of the Repo Man proper, he embraces it, gloating about his slaughters and his identity as the terrifying night surgeon, and ends up violently slaughtering a man DURING THE SONG. Since the contest started, "Remember who you are - I remember - Remember what you did to Marni!" has been stuck in my head on repeat.

Nominator: SceptileSolar (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBdUnT103A0

Villainy: 10
Characterization: 10
Melody: 9
Total: 29/30

I went into this with pretty nonesistent expectations. I'll admit I can be biased against Eastern stuff sometimes without intending to be. I'm not much of a JRPG guy, I don't watch a whole lot if anime outside of a small handful of shows, etc. I try to be as unbiased and neutral for a ranking like this as I can be, but with some exceptions, I think Western stuff tends to click with me a little more. So when I say that the song featured a separate translation link and one of those anime children that's actually supposed to be thousands of years old, I figured I knew what to expect. Then the song opens up with some God of War-esque instrumentals and chants, and my interest was piqued. Then the song opens with the following (translated) lines:

"Ah, fragrant is the canon that ushers in demise / Vomit blood and fall apart to the gospel of slaughter / I will dissect you unto the atomic level / And eradicate treachery forevermore"

Holy shit. I don't think any other song nominated comes close to diving that hard that fast into a description so violent that Dethklok would be in awe. And it never stops. The song is almost all in Japanese but it makes sure to sing "Genocide and genocide" in English just to make sure you know. I don't think any other song actually made my jaw drop, but this one did! Seriously, the villainy score was never going to drop even an ounce below max. I mean:

"Since I swore that I will murder the likes of miracles / I will incinerate even the slightest flicker of memory / And when I'm drunk on insanity, then his gentle smile, too / Will be obliviated by the song destroying this world"

"When you're wrung by the bellowing catastrophe / I will burn you in complete denial from your very foundation"

And the song still manages to make her a tragic figure! We learn of the loss of her father and how the only person she loved was taken from her by mankind, and she's left broken and endlessly destructive as a result, willing to sacrifice even the few happy memories she has left in her destruction of the world. Great vocals and excellent instrumentation here; just an incredible example of what a villain song can and should be.

4. Snuff Out the Light
Source: Kingdom of the Sun/The Emperor's New Groove
Villain: Yzma
Nominator: Place (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_hJxBUMuss

Villainy: 9
Characterization: 9
Melody: 10
Total: 28/30

"I've really stopped at nothing / Murder, treachery and lying / Whatever it takes to keep my looks / You really can't blame a girl for trying"

Fun fact that I assume Place didn't know prior: The Emperor's New Groove is my favorite Disney movie. I've legitimately seen it probably 30 times at this point, and it still makes me laugh consistently. That being said, in an alternate universe we got Kingdom of the Sun, the movie that The Emperor's New Groove was originally planned to be, which was intended to be a much darker movie with a heavier emphasis on Incan mythology. And goddamn would I give anything to see what that movie would've been, but I'm so glad we managed to get this absolute gem of a song. Weird to think one of the best songs Disney ever put out is from a movie that doesn't exist, but here we are!

This version of Yzma is not trying to kill the emperor, she's trying to use Supai, the Incan god of darkness to blot out the sun and plunge the world into eternal night in order to... stop herself from aging. It's maybe not the best plan, but it certainly is evil! Yzma does say directly in the song that she's killed in order to get to this point, and her plan is certainly on about as wide of a scale as you can get without being Lucilius. I think the only thing stopping it from being a 10 villainy score is that there's a lack of active malice in the song; she doesn't really wish hate on anyone, and there's no sadistic nature to her actions, her main priority is just embracing the darkness to give herself eternal youth.

In this song, we learn her history, and any song that lays out not just the villain's plans and the motivations behind the plans, and also the reasoning for those motivations coming to be is going to do very well here. That, and I absolutely love this song. Eartha Kitt was incredible and irreplaceable, and as much as I'd love to see them make Kingdom of the Sun into a proper musical someday, I don't imagine we'd ever see another Yzma this good.

5. Meant to Be Yours
Source: Heathers: The Musical
Villain: Jason Dean
Nominator: Inviso (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD7x_7tUFNI

Villainy: 10
Characterization: 9
Melody: 8
Total: 27/30

"And so I built a bomb / Tonight our school is Vietnam / Let's guarantee they never see their senior prom"

Kinda funny that the three 27-point songs all ended up with the same score dispersion! I had never seen Heathers prior to doing this ranking, but since it started I've watched both Heathers and Heathers: The Musical. Largely because this song made me realize I had no idea what Heathers was actually about. I always assumed it was basically just an 80s Mean Girls and never looked more into it, but holy shit is it darker than I'd imagined. I had actually heard the "Veronica, open the door" section prior because it was a viral Tiktok sound for a bit, though I never actually knew what it was from.

Despite Vis' surprise at its high placement, I feel like this score doesn't need justified too much! I mean, this is quite literally a guy who (Heathers spoilers) is planning to blow up a high school and frame all the deaths as a mass suicide. He had already killed three people prior to this (though that's not being counted toward the villainy score since it's not addressed here, not that it makes a difference, because planning a mass murder of teenagers is pretty indefensibly evil). In fact, part of what made me like the musical a little less than the movie is that the musical tries to give Jason Dean a little more of a redemption in the end (in the movie, Veronica disarms the bomb and then JD kills himself, but in the musical, she fails to disarm the bomb, and JD takes the bomb away to detonate alone and save her from being caught in the explosion), which felt pretty unearned and unwarranted.

JD is a scumbag masquerading as the troubled weird kid, and I think this song really shows it. The way he talks to Veronica when she won't respond to his plans to cuddle next to the fire of the burning school is pretty blatantly in line with an abuser, and while he sound devastated to find her dead (faking her death to get away from him), he gets over it pretty much immediately, making note that it won't stop his plans. He tries to convince both her and himself that he's the victim in the situation, while also blaming her for allowing things to get this far

you know on a list full of some very wacky and over-the-top horror, you'd think a slower and more serious one would be a good change of pace, but man it missed the mark for me

the haunted house itself was done well but it was definitely one of the more forgettable entries

6. Gila Monster
Source: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Villain: Gila Monster
Nominator: Snake55555556 (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQX2CsMCB9M

Villainy: 10
Characterization: 9
Melody: 8
Total: 27/30

"So beware, ye witchs fair / Lest thee be spied by dragon-glar / It'll show no mercy, it is said / But devour thee and leave thee for dead"

I've always meant to listen to more King Gizzard, but the sheer amount of music they have and the rate they put it out really just makes it hard to know where to start. I will say this song fuckin rules though. This is probably the most head-bangable track on the whole list; it really kinda leaves you with the feeling that you could go fist fight a bear. The pronunciation of Gila gets me every time, and the growling chorus really elevates the song, almost having a Rob Zombie feel the way the rhymes roll off. I do think I liked Ambrose Kenny-Smith's vocals more than Stu Mackenzie's (I absolutely had to look up those names though to put words to the thought).

The Gila Monster itself feels very Cthulu-inspired. It's summoned to the earth by witches, violently slaughters and eats the witches to grow its own power, and then roams the earth in seek of destruction and power. At a surface level, the Gila Monster seems pretty straightforward. He's summoned to serve as a servant of the witches, but never for a moment ends at mere revenge. He only gets more and more cruel, ambitious and all-powerful. I just want to post more lyrics directly, because they are not subtle:

"Growing immensely and vastly in size
Summoned from the wicca to their demise
Sprouting wings, demonic features
Horny for bloodlust, Lord of pagan creatures
Blacker than space, its eyes are distant suns, devouring its disciples
Like mischievous sons, in the forest of my mind
Runs a torrent of fire, the real me beneath the liar"

Gila Monster is a monster that, similar to the protagonist from Handlebars, sees no end to its ambition and desires for power and destruction. Again, about as subtlely as "I could end the planet in a holocaust," we get "Annihilation of planet earth and the beginning of merciless damnation"

7. Handlebars
Source: Flobots
Villain: The Narrator
Nominator: Bitto (eliminated)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA

Villainy: 10
Characterization: 9
Melody: 8
Total: 27/30

"I can hand out a million vaccinations / Or let 'em all die in exasperation / Have 'em all healed from their lacerations / Or have 'em all killed by assassination"

I've heard Handlebars more than most songs on this list, second only to songs like Iron Man and Sympathy for the Devil that are just everywhere. I've always really liked it! It's kinda surprising they never really got another hit nearly as big as this. Then again, I listened to a few of their other songs out of curiosity after this one, and they're other stuff (which seems pretty largely anti-war) didn't ever hit quite as good as Handlebars did.

I almost gave Handlebars a 10 for characterization here. I mean, you're basically getting the narrator's whole life story here. (side note: I've seen disagreements over whether the song is told from multiple perspectives or from one perspective about the different directions a life can take, but for the purposes of this I don't think it matters too much, because whether it's one person or two like the video implies, it doesn't really change the score). It does fall into the trap of never identifying the protagonist. Even though it's from the first perspective, everything is told by his actions rather than the emotions that drive him, which are all rooted in ambition. You see the way his ambition drives him from being a child learning to ride a bike, and while that ambition begins by creating a picture of dozens of fixations, the bulk of the song sees it spiral continuously out of control. He's a genius, an inventor, a leader, and more.

The song peaks at the peak of his ambition. After achieving his every dream he could've ever achieved, having basically unlimited power over the world, he begins to brag about having the lives of everyone at his own whim, and with nowhere else to go, he proclaims his ability to famously end the planet in a holocaust. Now I almost want to take a point off of the villainy because I do think it's presented all as hypothetical, but that's also kind of the whole point here. The villain being presented is the hypothetical version of himself with unstoppable ambition. Whether the world is ended or not is less important thant the fact that the intention is there.
