Origin > Celceta > Oath > VI >= Seven > Chronicles

Celceta has more Trails-like writing (though not as deep obviously) and quests which I kind of enjoyed. Seven also tries to focus on plot but it doesn't do it as well

Ys: Memories of Celceta (Vita)

Basically had everything I liked about Ys Seven and none of the things I disliked. Up there with Origin as my favorite in the series.

What didn't you like about Seven? always hear nothing but praise for that

Boss fights felt really tedious compared to normal, and the writing didn't seem as strong. Most of the new playable characters were totally forgettable as well.

The combat system was very solid overall though.

The first world you go through in BD (which I think is the one you go back to?) shows plenty of them dying and then coming back in this game though. In fact, I thought you killed all of them except Braev and Praline. <_<

(that's not entirely a complaint though, as the old asterisk holders are better than the new ones)
