I think I may be the only person in the world (certainly on the internet) who actually likes Summer on Smash. I mean, Miguel's verse adds absolutely nothing to the song, and that post-chorus bit where the beat breaks down and Swizz says SUMMER ON SMASH yet more times is irritating, but that beat is great.
And vocally Swizz Beatz has been in "so bad he's hilarious" territory for a while now. I mean, how can you hear WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE WELL and not smile out of sheer bemusement?
As for that trio of new albums that I checked out last week, I'm currently going Channel Orange > Skelethon > Life is Good. The latter's pretty consistent for a Nas album, but his on-mic performance has nothing on even Untitled (which, to be fair, I've always thought was unfairly maligned). Bye Baby is the only song where he displays even a modicum of emotion, and he simply doesn't rap well enough to make up for that for the most part.
surprise of the year so far: the new om album is like, really good. loads of violin, cello and piano swirling around, and they sound like a whole different band (which i guess they are since haikus left)
first worthwhile thing they've done since conference of the birds in my opinion
yeah but you were talking about the openers in reference to their albums, not the songs themselves
15 step is about as electronic as in rainbows gets (besides maybe videotape), and i don't think it's less of a rock song than say, climbing up the walls
I think genres are very fluid and subjective but at the same time I'm perplexed anyone would place OK Computer and In Rainbows in separate ones.
For me, though, every Radiohead album besides Kid A is a rock album of some description, and even then I don't think any other blanket term suits it better. They've certainly never made an album I'd describe as primarily electronic, which would seem like the obvious alternative unless you include ridiculously vague classifications like "alternative".
i happen to enjoy valtari because it has that sort of bland summery pleasantness that goes well with sun and general contentedness (see beach house, washed out)
to claim it's anywhere near ( ) is patently ridiculous though
what the hell is in rainbows if it isn't a rock album?
also i stand by the EEIRP judgement, it's flawless as an introduction to kid a, and pretty cool live, but easily in the bottom half of that album quality-wise
bloom and 15 step are the only radiohead openers that are legitimately great songs as opposed to good introductions to the tone of their respective albums
fantastic band for closers, but album openers not so much
os mutantes in the top ten is cool but i can't say i like any album in the top three and odessey and oracle top is just ugh
as is arthur being the third kinks album as is abbey road being the FIFTH beatles album as is the jazz contingent (well chosen as it is) being so low as is forever changes and astral weeks outside the top ten
actually, i don't like this list much at all!
edit: wait, they have please please me above a hard day's night too? come on
i wouldn't call it one of my favourite radiohead songs, but i think the album version of videotape is actually one of their most powerful statements. like, potentially top three.
also how anyone could think that song is about anything other than suicide is beyond me
From: WingedInsignia | #294 WalrusJump posted...my main impression was "why the hell is spirit of eden 110 spots higher than laughing stock?"
Calling it right now: Giggs.
Nope! I do prefer Spirit of Eden but Laughing Stock probably made my top 20 too. Only way you could blame me is indirectly, cos my attempts were always to get people here into both yet only Spirit seems to have really stuck.
iconsience's clear preference for Spirit has always left me a little perplexed too, actually!
I don't know why anybody would make fun of my top 5 when 1: It's awesome, and 2. It doesn't contain 3 albums by a single band which doesn't even deserve more than 1 album in a top 50 rock albums list.
can't disagree with your second point (if only because radiohead's best albums aren't rock), but your top five doesn't contain any bands which would even deserve one in such a list!
p.s. lolkanye is more talented than anyone in your top five. except MAYBE geoff tate, but he kinda invalidated himself by making cheesy prog metal
p.p.s. 31-40 is so much better than the top ten it's not even funny. at least they all placed highly!
fair enough! you should get on the-dream's stuff for sure though (assuming you enjoy the song in that link), he's clearly the most direct antecedent to frank ocean and his discography is remarkably solid
i'm as big a fan of the weeknd as anyone, but to credit that "suite" style of modern R&B songwriting to anyone but the-dream (and prince before him, obviously) is just ignorant
good song though, even if the last few minutes did seem kinda superfluous
