Sen. John McCain, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last year, has made the decision to discontinue medical treatment, his family said in a statement on Friday.

"Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment," the family of the Arizona Republican said in a statement.

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, is a key voice in the Republican Party and an icon of the Senate.

The statement went on to say, "Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all."

McCain's wife and daughter both put out additional statements on Twitter.

Cindy McCain, the senator's wife, wrote in a tweet, "I love my husband with all of my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey."

The senator's daughter, Meghan McCain, said in a tweet, "My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. We could not have made it this far without you - you've given us strength to carry on."

Senators, elected officials react

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the news "very sad," and said on Twitter that "John, Cindy, and the entire McCain family are in our prayers at this incredibly difficult hour."

"Very sad to hear this morning's update from the family of our dear friend @SenJohnMcCain. We are so fortunate to call him our friend and colleague. John, Cindy, and the entire McCain family are in our prayers at this incredibly difficult hour," McConnell tweeted.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted, "My thoughts and prayers are with Senator McCain and his family."

Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey said in a statement, "John McCain is an American hero, always putting country before self. From Vietnam to the halls of the U.S. Senate, the spirit of service and civility that has guided Senator McCain's life stands as a model for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation." The governor said that he and his wife Angela "had the great privilege of visiting with Senator McCain and Cindy in May. Then and now, our prayers and our hearts are with them and their entire family."

Countries which rely on rabid nationalism and xenophobia and doctrines of religious or racial superiority . . . eventually those countries find themselves consumed by civil or external war, Obama said in a speech widely interpreted as a rebuke to Trumps worldview.

Judd Devermont, director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Trumps weighing in on the issue was another example of the presidents comments derailing what is still a very unformed and unarticulated Africa policy.

President Trumps unfortunate tweet in response to a Fox News broadcast should not distract the United States from improving relations with South Africa, Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.), who are members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a joint statement. We care deeply about the United States relationships with all African countries. Constructive relationships require measured dialogue as opposed to arbitrary tweets.

The complicated issue of land expropriation has been fraught with emotion in South Africa, whose leaders quickly sought to stanch the enthusiasm of the far right over Trumps tweet.

Government officials said they would summon U.S. diplomats to explain the Trump administrations position, although Trump has yet to name an ambassador to the country.

We would like to discourage those who are using this sensitive and emotive issue of land to divide us as South Africans by distorting our land reform measures to the international community and spreading falsehoods that our white farmers are facing the onslaught from their own government, David Mabuza, South Africas deputy president, said while attending a land summit in the province of Limpopo. This is far from the truth.

Members of Afriforum, the South African white-supremacist group, recently toured the United States, and the groups causes have been taken up by other white supremacists, including Duke, said Jill Kelly, a South Africa scholar at Southern Methodist University.

She said studies have shown that farm murders in South Africa are at a 20-year low and that murders in general in the country have been declining since the end of apartheid.

Analysts said the idea that white farmers in South Africa were being unfairly treated and are attacked in large numbers by nonwhites has persisted for decades. Brian Levin, a professor of criminal justice at California State University at San Bernardino who studies hate groups, said the narrative of white genocide has been central to the white-nationalist movement across the globe.

Now we have an American leader parroting these talking points once theyve been transmitted through cable news. Its astounding, Levin said. Cumulatively, these messages and particularly the bluntness and adherence to inaccurate information or conspiracy theories are taken like rocket fuel within this fragmented, but still very significant, white-nationalist community.

In a news briefing in Johannesburg, Julius Malema, the head of South Africas far-left EFF party, said: We are more determined, after the Donald Trump tweet, to expropriate our land without compensation. . . . Theres no white genocide here. There is black genocide in the USA.

At the State Department, spokeswoman Heather Nauert confirmed that Trump and Pompeo discussed South Africa and added that Pompeo promised the president he would review the matter of land being taken from white farmers.

In general, she said, expropriation of land without compensation would not be a good thing and would send South Africa down the wrong path.

Foreign policy analysts said that Trumps administration has not articulated a clear Africa strategy and that the presidents lack of interest has harmed U.S. interests in sub-Saharan Africa, which features fast-growing populations and economies. Obama visited the continent three times as president, and he gave the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture there last month.

President Trumps promotion of a white-nationalist conspiracy theory involving South Africa prompted fierce backlash there Thursday and fresh criticism in the United States that he is compromising American foreign policy to stoke his far-right political base.

Former U.S. diplomats and South African leaders denounced Trumps declaration in a tweet late Wednesday that he had instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to monitor the large scale killing of white farmers and the governments expropriations of their land.

White-nationalist groups have for years spread false claims about the murder rates, assertions that have been widely debunked. Local police data shows the number of people murdered on farms has dropped by half over the past two decades from 140 in 2001-2002 to 74 in 2016-2017, according to the Associated Press.

Trumps tweet appeared to come in response to a segment on Fox News in which host Tucker Carlson railed against a plan by South Africas governing party to pursue constitutional changes allowing the government to redistribute land without compensating the owners. The measure is designed to redress racial inequalities that have persisted for nearly a quarter-century after the end of apartheid in 1994.

White nationalists in the United States and South Africa, where a fringe group called Afriforum has advanced the conspiracy theory, hailed the presidents remarks. David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, thanked Trump on Twitter and tweeted an image of a white woman holding a sign reading Stop white genocide. Mike Peinovich, a far-right podcast host, called Trumps endorsement very big and said that this is how we slowly chip away at the all-consuming anti-white discourse.

Critics lambasted the president for endorsing the conspiracy theory to his 54 million Twitter followers. Patrick Gaspard, who served as U.S. ambassador to South Africa under President Barack Obama, noted that this was the first time Trump had mentioned Africa on Twitter since he took office.

He uses the occasion to lift a white-supremacist meme from the darkest place he can find, Gaspard, now president of Open Society Foundations, said in an interview. So many of my friends in South Africa are bewildered that a modern president of the United States, instead of leaning into issues of constitutionalism and jurisprudence, lifts up these themes. Its dangerous and poisoned.

Trump faced an intense backlash for saying last summer that a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, where a counterprotester was killed, featured some very fine people on both sides. In January, he sparked more outrage when he complained to lawmakers in a private meeting at the White House that U.S. immigration law offered protections for people from shithole countries, referring to Haiti, El Salvador and some African nations.

The presidents tweet about South Africa was his latest bid to signal common cause with nationalist movements abroad, including in Europe, where Trump and his top aides have expressed solidarity with populist governments pursuing anti-immigration agendas.

Trump has not visited Africa since taking office, although first lady Melania Trump announced this week that she will visit the continent in October for her first major solo trip.

Manafort convicted on 8 counts; mistrial declared on 10 other charges

The trial was the first public test of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible Russian meddling and obstruction of justice by Trump.

A federal jury in Virginia convicted Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, on eight felony counts on Tuesday, but the judge declared a mistrial on the 10 other charges he faced.

Manafort, a fixture in Republican politics for decades, was convicted of five counts of tax fraud, one count of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts and two counts of bank fraud. A mistrial was declared in three counts of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts, and seven counts of bank fraud and bank fraud conspiracy.

Prosecutors built a case that Manafort for years hid millions from U.S. tax authorities in overseas accounts, spending the money to maintain a lavish lifestyle and lying to banks to generate more cash.

The trial was the first public test of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, and while the special counsel was vindicated, the victory wasn't total.

Last month it also emerged that Mr Cohen had made a secret recording of the president, in which they discuss a payment to buy the rights to former Playboy model Karen McDougal's story from the parent company of the National Enquirer tabloid.
Ms McDougal had sold her story to the Enquirer in the run-up to the presidential election.
Undisclosed payments on behalf of a political candidate could be considered a violation of US campaign finance laws.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-45265546

US President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen has entered into a plea deal with US federal prosecutors in New York, US media report.

Mr Cohen will reportedly plead guilty to felony charges including tax fraud and campaign finance violations.

He had previously admitted to arranging hush money for a woman who claimed she had an affair with Mr Trump, which could be a campaign finance violation.

Mr Cohen is reportedly due to appear in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday.
He reportedly surrendered himself to the FBI in New York and is now in the custody of authorities. The charges against him could carry prison time.

Mr Cohen worked at the Trump Organization for more than a decade and continued to serve as Mr Trump's personal lawyer after the 2016 election.

His potential co-operation with investigators has been tipped for weeks.
The nature of the reported plea deal is unclear and does not necessarily entail that Mr Cohen is co-operating against the president.
It could simply mean he has agreed to plead guilty to unspecified charges in order to spare both sides a lengthy trial.

The New York Times reported on Sunday night that federal investigators were looking into Mr Cohen's business activities.
They were focusing on more than $20m (15.5m) in loans to taxi businesses owned by Mr Cohen and his family, according to the newspaper.

What does the deal mean?
Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington
Ever since federal investigators raided Michael Cohen's office and home back in April, there was speculation that it was only a matter of time before he faced criminal consequences. The only question was whether it would come in the form of an indictment or some type of plea deal negotiated with prosecutors.
It appears it will be the latter.

What this means, of course, is still an open question. Mr Cohen was Donald Trump's long-time lawyer, business associate and all-around fixer. If there are skeletons in Mr Trump's closet, Mr Cohen could know where they lurk.

While a plea deal doesn't guarantee that he is sharing information relevant to other federal investigations, he may be rewarded during sentencing if he does so. And the growing tension between Mr Cohen and the Trump team could make that more likely.

Mr Cohen reportedly said he has details about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between top members of Mr Trump's campaign staff and Russian nationals.

He facilitated a six-figure payment on the eve of the 2016 election to an adult film actress who was poised to state that she had a sexual liaison with Mr Trump.

These are topics that Mr Cohen might be inclined to flush out in further detail, surely to the discomfort of those in the White House.
The FBI seized a number of files during a raid in April on Mr Cohen's office and a hotel room used by him in New York.

They reportedly conducted the raid following a tip-off from the team of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mr Mueller is investigating whether Trump campaign aides colluded with alleged Kremlin attempts to sway the 2016 presidential election his way.

The president has distanced himself from Mr Cohen since he left his post as Mr Trump's personal lawyer in May.

The investigation into Mr Cohen's business dealings has strained his relationship with the president.

He once famously vowed he would take a bullet for Mr Trump. But he said in an interview last month that his loyalty to his family and country came before his old boss.

What was the hush money about?
In May, the president admitted he had reimbursed Mr Cohen for a payment he made to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels about her alleged affair with Mr Trump just days before the election.

Mr Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the $130,000 (100,675) payment as part of a non-disclosure agreement.

95% of commercially used (in the US, at least) asbestos is white (chrysotile) asbestos. This is the powdery, soft asbestos. It is by far the "safest" type of asbestos because it is less likely to be inhaled. Here is a SEM (scanning electron microscope) image of white asbestos. https://goo.gl/X1CkSM While there are still health risks involved in working around white asbestos, it is not nearly as bad as blue (crocidolite) asbestos. The image below is blue asbestos. It was mainly used in Australia, and it's estimated that up to 20% of crocidolite miners will die of mesothelioma. Luckily, as far as heat-resistant properties go, it isn't nearly as good as white asbestos, so its use is not nearly as common.

Imagine swallowing a big handful of straight pins. Now instead shrink them down until they're microscopic. Now multiply the number you had by tens of thousands (if not millions, billions, etc. Difficult to truly get a reasonable scale here). That's what's happening to your lungs when you inhale asbestos fibers.

This is what you're dealing with. You inhale it, it goes through your airways causing microtears which lead to inflammation. That's not a huge deal until it happens on a large enough scale (such as asbestos exposure). To make things worse, it will stick into the linings of your airways, lungs, etc. It doesn't go away. Everywhere they stick in is going to be permanently inflamed. Chronic inflammation can damage your DNA and can lead to cancer. A lot more goes into it than that, but you can safely say chronic inflammation is bad news regardless of why it's happening.

Another way of thinking of it: asbestos is like a splinter that will never go away. Except now you have millions of them and they're all throughout your airways.

The more fibers you're exposed to, the greater the damage done. Even among workers who were chronically exposed, the effects often take decades to manifest. If you are feeling short of breath a year after a single exposure, there is likely something else behind that, although it doesn't hurt to go get checked out.

Another way of thinking of it: asbestos is like a splinter that will never go away. Except now you have millions of them and they're all throughout your airways.

The more fibers you're exposed to, the greater the damage done. Even among workers who were chronically exposed, the effects often take decades to manifest. If you are feeling short of breath a year after a single exposure, there is likely something else behind that, although it doesn't hurt to go get checked out.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos#Production

In 2015, 2 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide. Russia was the largest producer with about 55% of the world total, followed by China (20%), Brazil (15.6%), and Kazakhstan (10.8%).

Trumps EPA pick rolled it back under Trumps orders and a Russian asbestos company even put Trumps face on their product.

The report states that the agency will no longer consider the effect or presence of substances in the air, ground, or water in its risk assessments.

The World Health Organization notes that all types of asbestos cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, cancer of the larynx and ovary, and asbestosis, saying exposure results from inhaling airborne fibers in working environments, air near factories that handle asbestos or air in buildings that contain decaying asbestos materials. The group says that one of the most efficient ways to eliminate asbestos-related diseases is to stop the use of all types of asbestos.

The trade group the Chrysotile Association (chrysotile is what is mined in Asbest) says that its product is less carcinogenic than other types of asbestos.

The classification of the World Health Organization establishes hazard of a substance rather than risk, it writes on its website. Almost four hundred other products and industrial processes are considered carcinogenic to humans, probably or possible carcinogenic to humans, but this does not mean that we must ban their use. This means that we need a strict control over their use.

The Environmental Protection Agency has never implemented a full asbestos ban. In 2016, Congress amended the Toxic Substances Control Act, giving the EPA a mandate to evaluate chemicals in use nationwide and raising hopes initially among some advocates that the agency would move forward with a full asbestos ban. Those hopes have yet to be borne out in the Trump era, in which the EPA has taken a sharp turn toward deregulation.

Asbestos was the poster child for why the original law was broken and not working, so now asbestos is an important litmus test as to whether the new law is better, Melanie Benesh, an Environmental Working Group lawyer, told The Washington Post. This administration is really responsible for setting the rules and setting the precedent for some of the ways this new law was going to be implemented. As far as we see, theyre taking every step they can to minimize this law and limit this law and not implement it in the way that it was intended.

In an email, the EPA said that asbestos was one of the first chemicals selected to be studied per the terms of the amended law. Final risk evaluations will be published by December 2019, it said.

Asbestos producers and associations in Russia have moved actively on potential bans against the product around the world, the Center for Public Integrity reported. Andrei Kholzakov, the chairman of the Uralasbest union, reportedly asked for Putins help.

He promised to support Russian producers of chrysotile, Kholzakov said afterward in a press release quoted by the Center for Public Integrity, especially in situations where we find ourselves under political pressure at the international level.

Approved by Donald Trump: A Russian asbestos company that operates a giant mine in the Ural Mountains is marketing its wares with President Trumps image, according to photos it posted on social media, citing former EPA administrator Scott Pruitt as well as Trumps outspoken support for the carcinogen.

The company Uralasbest posted photos of the pallets adorned with a seal with Trumps face in the center on its Facebook page in June.

Approved by Donald Trump, 45th President of the United States, the seal read, according to a translation supplied by the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit focused on human health and the environment that flagged the posting.

Asbestos, a fibrous silicate mineral that was used widely in industrial and commercial purposes such as construction in the United States, has fallen out of favor in many applications after a large body of scientific evidence connecting exposure to serious health concerns. Its use is restricted in the United States, though it has never been outright banned, as it has been in at least 60 other countries.

But Trump has long expressed skepticism about its potential health effects after it is applied. In his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, he wrote that he believed that anti-asbestos efforts were led by the mob. In 2012, he tweeted that the World Trade Center would not have burned down had asbestos, which is known for fire-resistant properties, not been removed from the towers.

The asbestos company focused on this supportive stance in a post accompanying the pictures.

Donald is on our side! the company posted in a caption for the photos, which also cited Pruitt.

The use of asbestos in the United States has decreased dramatically in recent decades as links to health effects such as mesothelioma and lung cancer have come into focus. Because it is no longer mined in the United States, asbestos is imported for its remaining uses, primarily for the chlor-alkali industry. Until recently, 95 percent of asbestos in the United States was imported from Brazil, and the rest from Russia, according to Chemical & Engineering News, but a recent ban on the mining, use and sale of asbestos in Brazil has left an opening in the market. Some lawmakers have expressed worries about Russia being the sole asbestos supplier to the United States, Chemical & Engineering News reported.

Perhaps some companies are aware of these opportunities. Uralasbest, which reportedly counts Russian President Vladimir Putin as an ally, operates an enormous mine in Asbest, seven miles long, a mile and a half wide and about 1,000 feet deep for an area that is nearly half the size of Manhattan, according to the Center for Public Integrity. The company did not return a request for immediate comment.

Asbest, named for its chief product, was once known as the dying city because of elevated rates of lung cancer and other diseases, the center reported. A New York Times report from 2013 paints a grim picture of life in the mining town:
Residents describe layers of it collecting on living room floors. Before they take in the laundry from backyard lines, they first shake out the asbestos. When I work in the garden, I notice asbestos dust on my raspberries, said Tamara A. Biserova, a retiree. So much dust blows against her windows, she said, that before I leave in the morning, I have to sweep it out. Asbest is one of the more extreme examples of the environmental costs of modern Russias deep reliance on mining.
