Going into TRU as a kid was like crossing the pearly gates, it wasn't like being in one of those department stores that your parents took you to that bored you to tears. TRU was all for you from the bikes, train sets, action figures, stuffed animals, legos and video games it was always a joy to go there. Even if you couldn't pick anything up just going there could be a real treat. Who could forget the process of picking up a video game there, how you picked up a voucher for the game you wanted and the clerk went to the video game section to retrieve the game for you, it felt like a magical hourney to a child. I remember picking up games like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Sonic 3D Blast, X-men 2: Clone Wars and Pokemon Blue there to name a few. I was disappointed when I went there as an adult and saw the process changed when I picked up a copy of Tekken 5. Over the past few years whenever I went by the local TRU off to the side of the mall I almost never stopped in always feeling like I was in a hurry. The last three items I bought there were all board games I got a generic game board that played 10-1 different games, + a Magic the gathering tabletop for my friends' birthdays and this past January I got a copy of the Jumanji board game for myself. Weather permitting I'll try to get up to the local TRU this week for one last stroll through the store before it's gone forever. Even though I'll always have the memories of going there it fills me with melancholy to know that Geoffrey the Giraffe isn't long for this world. Fuck Bain Capital.
