The irs shouldn't have to change much except what is considered an acceptable adjustment/reduction to taxable income in cases where unemployment is being reported.

But all the major software people will need to adjust their software so the returns they are submitting are taking advantage of the change.

Hey FD, I have a tax question

A situation that came up for me last year was that I was apparently owed some very small amount of money (less than 10 bucks I think) because of something having to do with dividends on foreign stock. Because of that, I was forced to pay much more than that to upgrade from the free version of whatever tax software I was using.

Would it have been fine to just have not reported that (since doing so would make my refund smaller rather than larger) to have avoided the larger fee on the software?

red13n posted...
use the link from the IRS website. This will bypass that. At least it does for turbotax.

If you use the tax software's free link they'll sucker you in.

Basically this. I'll elaborate:

This is the IMPORTANT INFORMATION that EVERYONE should know.

1) Go to www.irs.gov

2) Click "File your taxes for free"

3) If your income is below 72,000 there will be an option to file your taxes for free. And that's regardless of how complicated they are. The important distinction is that you use the link from this irs.gov page to reach the filing website.

~~

For example, I use TaxAct to file my taxes.

If I went to the TaxAct website directly and set up an account I would definitely be charged to file my taxes.

But instead I click the link on the irs.gov page and so I set up a Free version TaxAct account and they cannot possibly charge me.

Those sites are all required to have a free filing option if you meet certain income requirements (which vary from site to site). But they are not required to make it apparent when you just go directly to their site. So millions of people every year end up paying their software when a couple of extra clicks would have them filing for free.

red sox 777 posted...
No. That would be illegal. But you don't need to buy the software - you can fill out the forms yourself.

I mean, this is true, but NOBODY should be filing taxes by mail this year. We are SOOOO backed up that you are adding months of potential delay by filing by mail currently.

But if you do want to file by mail and you have enough of an understanding to fill out the forms yourself (which is honestly not that hard if you go line by line and refer to the 1040 instructions if you get confused) then you can use the "Free File Fillable Forms" page on irs.gov to populate the forms and then print them out.

CaptainOfCrush posted...
The people who will need to amend their already filed tax returns to get a bigger refund will also need to pay their tax preparers again in order to amend them.

Talk about a wet fart.

Which is why (almost) nobody should be paying to have their taxes filed in this day and age.

I am owed a pretty significant refund if this is indeed the case.

Of course I already filed taxes a couple weeks ago.

Good news! As of last year you are able to file 1040-X amended returns electronically now. If your taxes have finished being processed you can get that started. It will probably still take a few months to process but paper 1040-X returns are so badly backed up that doing it electronically will be much faster.

But you'll need to wait for the original return to finish processing first. Hopefully it already has, but many people made errors when filling and are currently experiencing delays. (Most of the ones I've reviewed have involved people who received their stimulus and then claimed the recovery rebate credit on their taxes because they didn't understand the questions about it which hopefully you did not do)

The changes to eligibility are dumb, but it's hard to say "wow dems so awful" when republicans by and large will be VOTING NO to there being additional stimulus.

Also Stim #1 and Stim#2 were issued based upon 2019 income information (or in the case of Stim#1 the 2018 information was looked at if 2019 hadn't been filed yet), but the bottom-line determination of eligibility for both of those payments is your income from 2020. So if you had pandemic related loss of income in 2020 then you had/have the option to claim Stim#1 and Stim#2 on the 2020 tax return because both of those payments are coming from the 2020 portion of your account with the IRS.

Will Stim#3 work the same way? Impossible to say until something is actually passed and being implemented. The fact that 2020 returns are already being processed makes me think it would be difficult to retroactively make it a part of the 2020 tax module. Would everyone who already filed get the $1400 issued retroactively based upon their 2020 information? Would the system still look at 2019 in instances where 2020 has not yet been filed? In the case of the latter would the $1400 then also be claimable on 2020 or will it be designated as part of the 2021 tax module instead? If that's the case then someone who (A) does not qualify based upon 2019 and (B) does qualify based upon 2020 but (C) has not filed 2020 yet so 2019 is the most recent information on file would probably slip through the cracks until they could eventually claim the $1400 as part of their 2021 taxes. But that's just one possible implementation and until it is passed and in progress we wont know exactly how it's being issued.

Source: Am an IRS employee who has been eating, sleeping and breathing stimulus issues for 40 hours a week for 11~ months now.

Disclaimer: This is not tax advice nor should it be misconstrued as such. Please consult a tax professional and do your own due diligence when filing. Do not interpret this as an official statement from the IRS as actions you should take nor as an explanation or how a potential Stim#3 will definitely be implemented.

Some of us live in our cars during winter in a pandemic because society is on the brink of collapse.

Forcing through some help sure does seem like the lawful good solution right now.

But why is it that republicans get to hold 'doing good things' hostage?

Dems: We want to do Good Thing A and Good Thing B

Reps: We don't want to do EITHER of those things, and we sure as hell aren't going to let you do BOTH.

Dems: Well here is our proposal to do both.

Reps: We aren't passing that unless you take off Good Thing B. And if you make any attempt to do both we will be loud about how you are just "playing politics" and how it's YOUR fault that Good Thing A is not happening because you are unreasonably trying to do TWO good things at one time. How dare you try to fulfill campaign promises. We conveniently forgot that Trump held the entire government budget hostage for a wall and our best defense was "well people voting for him knowing he would do this so clearly this is what voters want him to do. he has the mandate of the people". But clearly that logic doesn't apply to you when you win elections.

.

Like everyone wants Dems to play hardball to effect ACTUAL change.... until Dems actually try to stick to something and then public opinion flips? It's bananas.

I'm not sure that they do anything currently. In theory they could have someone show their minecraft installation folders before and after attempts so you could see any files that aren't supposed to be there? And show themselves launching the exe from that folder? Or they could get one of those Easy Anti-Cheat applications going like what fall guys had to use after cheating was rampant. I'm really not sure.

If he wanted to get away with it then he should have put in work doing many hours of legit attempts and then used the modded version of the drop tables for one single attempt and then go back to legit attempts. And then probably maintain a ratio of one cheated attempt for every thirty legit attempts to dilute the observable-ness of the manipulated RNG.

Instead he had several full streams of cheated attempts. And so the impossible-ness of his luck was more conclusively proven by the aggregate result of many consecutive cheated attempts.

I thought the controversy was that he'd done multiple speedruns and got 'impossibly' lucky every time?

Competing in a speedrun category where the major factor in how fast you can complete it is luck and then complaining that the winner was lucky seems pointless.

There's is a difference between being lucky and being so lucky across multiple runs that it's a mathematical fact that cheating occurred.

The dude was playing a Modded version of Minecraft to alter the drop rates of items and trying to pass it off as vanilla.

JK Rowling does seem not understand the difference between Biological Sex (as defined by having XX or XY Chromosomes) and someone's Gender Identity (as defined by a person's own psychological view of themselves).

When that comes up it feels like a very Black Lives Matter vs All Lives Matter sort of thing.

"We are saying Black Lives Matter to call attention to the racial inequality that black people experience"
"Yeah, but wouldn't you say that ALL lives matter too? ALL includes black people too."
"I mean sure, but that isn't the POINT. That isn't the conversation that we're having right now."

.

"We are discussing gender identities because that is how we personally feel about ourselves and how we identity ourselves as people"
"Yeah, but male and female are different things! Chromosomes. Science. Etc."
"I mean sure, but that is not relevant to gender identity. Those are different things"

Like you might as well respond by saying "Lima is the capital of Peru". It might be a factual statement, but it just doesn't have anything to do with the conversation.

One last thing: it is important to be clear when saying things like racist. It's possible for a joke to be racist without the person making the joke being a racist.

To use myself as an example I'm certain when I was a child I used the phrase "gypped" when I felt like I was cheated. I was fully unaware of the phrases origins and that it was a racist slur. To me it was just a word that meant "to be cheated or treated unfairly" the same way "pencil" means "a lead/graphite based wiring utensil". Eventually I learned the phrase's meaning and I removed it from my vocabulary, but the fact remains that I did use a racial slur whether I was aware of it at the time or not.

It is however possible for someone to make a breathing joke about George Floyd without it having to do with his race or what came about afterwords.

If you believe this then you are not being racially sensitive or aware of the impact of those words and ideas.

The joke wasn't about George Floyd's astrological sign.

The joke wasn't about a physical feature that George Floyd had that caused him to be picked on in grade school.

The "joke" was about his death. You know, that one time where he was murdered by police officers. It was national news and used as an example of racial inequality. Those thoughts and those ideas are so intrinsically linked that you do not get to reference his death in a vacuum. And if you are attempting to reference his death in a vacuum without all the other "baggage" ruining your joke then I'm afraid you are guilty of being racially insensitive.

It literally could not be more clear cut.

TUM when the thing being accused is "not being sensitive to the ramifications of the statement you are making" then you can't say "it comes down to the intent of the message". The fact that the intent was oblivious to the ramifications is proof by itself.

That would be like if I got pulled over for driving recklessly and my excuse was "well my intent was to juggle three balls in one hand and solve a rubik's cube with my other hand and i just so happened to be on the highway at the time. How can I be guilty of driving recklessly if I did not intend to do so?"

It's completely beyond the pale to suggest you can't do anything wrong unless it is premeditated.

I was going to mention this. They couldn't even make it to the end of the movie where they explained things retained their mass.

But looking into it a bit it seems in the comics they go back and forth on this issue as well and the closest thing they have to an explanation is that when things shrink or expand there is a transference of mass via the quantum realm so mass can either be stored in or pulled from the quantum realm as the situation requires... Or something
