[This is a really obscure pick. I cant find any information about the song... should give a few bonus points for that.]

Has anyone besides the two of us even heard of this song? There's only six views--if I've watched it four times for ranking purposes and you had to view it to get the link, then... one other person at best has seen this? </.<

Song's got a nice classic rock sound to it. Nothing super amazing, but it's got a complete story & it's catchy enough that I wouldn't change the station if it came on. It's not a story I can particularly relate to, but there's nothing wrong with it.

...honestly I like it more than I'm making it sound.

[Final Thoughts: I kinda like how direct the story is here. Not to say I didn't enjoy the complicated ones as well, but sometimes, you just want to relax. Easy story, easy to understand lyrics (can't find the lyrics transcribed anywhere, but don't need any), it's just rather soothing... which isn't likely what they were going for, but it works incredibly well for me.]

Nominator: Dragon (5/10)

(6, 6.5, [I forget what number I had here, but it was upgraded to 9.5 eventually])

[Provides an interesting contrast to last years LDR song, "Love".]

This is a heavier song; in terms of the weight to her voice, the lyric content, the video, pretty much everything.

I'm undecided if I prefer this over the other song or not... which is odd considering how terrible "Love" did last year (173rd/200) and this song is practically guaranteed to do better than that.

[Final Thoughts: From #191 to #41. This song was scheduled to be eliminated an eternity ago, but something about that voice of hers... the song just kept inching up the list. There was never any sudden declaration of "I've decided to give this song 9 points now!" or anything. Just a "well, this song is a bit better than this block of 10 songs, I'll eliminate it tomorrow instead", "and this block", "well, maybe after this block", "and this block", night after night... listening to this song and deciding not to cut it at the last possible second has been part of my nightly routine for weeks now.

Honestly, I'm kind of sad it's over. For a while, I was starting to wonder if this track was going to sneak its way into first place by default or something. But I think we're finally at a point where I can agree to eliminate it.

...also not really sure why I was suddenly into "Love" at the time I wrote some of this?]

[Never played the game. Given the content warnings, it seemed best to stay away from it. Of course, the game is so popular I think I know most of it anyway... sadly, some of the twists seem like something Id love, but they probably lose their impact if you already know going in. Probably best I avoid such depressing things anyway.]

I'm probably ranking this song too highly now, but it kinda pushes a lot of my buttons. As I've said, I like songs performed by characters ; I also deeply love meta experiences and everything I know about Monika and the plot twists make this a very meta song. It's enough that I give it high marks, even though it's not technically the most impressive song and I'm only going off second-hand spoilers without having actually experienced it myself.

[Final Thoughts: Does a lot of things I love. Sounds happy on the surface, but decidedly isn't. The relative simplicity of the song helps sell it as being performed in character--it's a small touch, but I appreciate how the music and singing actually feel like something the character could do.]

I'd make a Paranoia Agent reference for this elimination, but I only saw that series once years ago and don't recall enough to make a coherent one.

[Pretty great and it does make me curious about the rest of the album, but I dont think the singers voice is dark and angry enough to fully sell the lyrics.]

When I think "hell-ish sci-fi prison planet", I just think of a deeper, crueler voice than this singer is capable of pulling off. Not that he isn't great, just too...happy? Or happy adjacent at any rate. I still like the band and the sci-fi twists here have my attention. I should probably look into this band more someday//==

...That was a typo when I missed the period and then also missed the backspace key, but I like the way it looks and I'm leaving it that way.

[Final Thoughts: I don't think it would have impacted the placement in any notable way, but I think I prefer the song has it was uploaded to YouTube, with the Prologue & Dark Sentencer being combined into one track. I certainly see the value in splitting them up: A ten minute runtime can feel excessive and I think most people would want to quickly get to the actual song part, but I love spoken word sections and the ambiance in the Prologue. That deep voice, the low tones of the backing music, that might be the highlight of the track.

If I was positive it would impact the score, I'd be very tempted to just use that link instead. If I found Spotify links better than YouTube, I haven't been shy about swapping them and giving the best possible score... seems rather fitting to do the reverse for at least one song. It'd arguably be cheating a bit (Prologue & Dark Sentencer are officially different tracks on the album), but my interest in giving the highest possible score would trump any hesitation over minor technicalities.

But... while it's a very nice opening that commands my full attention and does things I love, it's still not quite enough to push this to a 10 or anything. Does a great job of setting up the universe and tempting me to try the rest of the album (which as I said back at Little Shop of Horrors is all one could reasonably want from a Prologue) though.]

(Meep Morp, 9.7, 9.3)

[This song is way out of my league. I have no music education, so I can barely parse the description as being words. Its also really long and the beginning is so dull that I wanted to give it a 0... but it did get a lot better and I enjoyed it, but its so long and complicated... I cant decide on a score for it. I give it an official rank of Meep Morp and will decide where that places later.

But that outro is definitely a 10. The song is part 0, part 10, and ten minutes of meep morp.

...Ohhh, right, Peridot from Steven Universe! Thats where I got Meep Morp from... this song kinda feels like her, somehow. It's weird, but good, I think?]

*note: "Meep Morp" was determined to be a 10, around the point that "Glorfest" was determined to be about a 7 (or as I put it at the time, 'at least three points below Meep Morp'. Least, I think that's how I put it at the time. Close enough.*

I think it's because she was only able to process music as a pattern at first and was always the technological one, so a song that's literally just patterns and algorithms produced by a computer would probably be her idea of Meep Morp. It actually makes sense as a connection, at least more sense than my connections usually do, when you think about it.

But now that I understand where that train of thought came from, it and the song itself, are less mysterious. Like the first two times it put me in this weird trance, where I couldn't decipher what I was thinking or why. Now that I know, it's...well, not exactly ordinary, but not as magical as it was either. So, the score has dropped some--a high score, but not as overwhelmingly high as it was the first two times.

[Ha, I was kinda waiting and hoping for you to enter something with her again. I still wouldn't say I'm really a fan, but shes not bad and the lyrics are interesting enough that Im glad this isnt an instrumental track. Still... that violin might be the best part...]

Violin is still great, though I'd say the absolute best part ofthe song is the first verse. Singing about darkness painting over the ominous light while flourishing that cape, she has all the makings of a vampire queen and/or final boss fight. Absolutely spectacular.

The other verses weren't able to live up to the high expectations from the initial greatness. They were never bad, of course, but not 10/10 like the first one. Though the latter part of the song does have more violin playing, so it probably evens out in the end anyway.

[Catchy and fun.]

Well presumably. My attempts to translate the song went nowhere, so I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the song was secretly tragic or something.

After school dance floor
Shake the skirt
Even if beaten
Pretend not to notice

Like, I'm not sure how that line should have been translated, but that could easily be something depressing. Actually hard to read that as anything non-tragic to be honest, though it could still just be Google's usual gibberish. Who knows? For now, I'm just going to accept that it sounds like a fun song and avoid digging any further. </.<

[Final Thoughts: On my last attempt to find anything related to this song, I found her song, "Connected World" almost by accident. Wasn't looking for it, but it was one of the top results and had a GameBoy inspired thumbnail, so I had to click it.

Hard to say where it would have finally ended up, but my first impression would be somewhere in the 10s--probably towards the middle of that final group? Great song and very personally relevant, but still unlikely to steal first place. Still, it was very much worth searching for her to find such an outstanding track, so thank you for indirectly leading me to it?]

Nominator: paulg (1/15)

(2.5, 6, 9.3)

[Its kinda funny, but its already been made fun of by so many people that I have nothing to contribute.]

"So Gramps opened up the bag! And took out the magical shoes!"

Honestly, the only thing wrong with the song is how obvious a pick it is--I like comedy songs, I like cartoons, I wanted some lighter rap songs (and it doesn't get lighter than MAGICAL SHOES).

...well obvious in hindsight, I mean. It's not as obvious a choice as ponies or something, but this is very much my type of thing. Not much to say about it though. You either enjoy the pure insanity of this intro or you don't.

[Final Thoughts: On the one hand, I can kinda see why you'd be surprised by the high placement since we don't actually know each other. But as someone who

1.Loves cartoons.

2.Loves obscure things.

3.Loves joke nominations.

4.Likes finding rap songs that are light and easy to get into.

It's like...there's no way this was getting a low score.

...Except for the initial impression where it did? I think, as the write-up alluded to, I was just a bit bitter that I was going to have to do a write-up for it. Like 'everyone has already made fun of this song, there is nothing left for anyone to say anymore'... but over time, I had to admit that I was actually enjoying it. Like everything about it.

1: The absurdity of the concept.

2: The intro being so much longer than a cartoon intro needed to be.

3: MC Hammer feeling the need to not only explain where the main character got his powers (he was given magical shoes), but to explain where the previous owner got them (he was also given the magical shoes--just a long, long time ago.).

...I kinda want to know where the hip hop motown dude got the magical shoes. Did any episodes go into his backstory? And is that backstory also best summed up as "he was given the magical shoes"? And if so, who gave them to him and where did they get them? Have these magical shoes been passed down since the dawn of time? I am very invested in this story.

The sad part is that I'm not even being sarcastic right now! I would pay to hear Hammer just keep talking (TALK!) about the history of these magic shoes.

4: The background speaker who contributes absolutely nothing to the story, just shouting single words for no apparent reason. Ordering MC Hammer to TALK might be justifiable (if he hadn't already started telling the story by the time the background speaker yelled at him), but the way he felt the need to repeat Stanley's name is so...so stupid.

MC Hammer: They met a guy named Stanley.

Speaker: STANLEY!

Like I'm finding it so hard to contain my laughter right now; this song is a masterpiece and I have half a mind to move it into first place.

But... no, I think I'm happier leaving it here. Just outside the top 50. It's a harder call to make than it should be, but I'm going to let the joke die here.]

I haven't written an elimination for paulg, but I will write it, and it'll be much better than when we had "Meow".

[Not really into the lyrics or subject matter, but her voice isnt bad and I didnt not enjoy it. I guess thats about a 6?]

She's got a nice voice. Still not crazy for the lyrics--I can't say they're actually explicit, but they don't leave much room to try interpreting them in any other ways--but... well, I like her voice enough to make her a bit of an exception and give a decent score.

[Late Edit: ...Did I really just put a pop song about a girl singing about how she'll do it on the floor (she don't care. anymore.) over a deeply spiritual song that I actually enjoyed?

Somehow I regret everything, yet can't bring myself to flip the positions or even make it a tie.]

[Later Edit: ...Yeah this was only one space above Hymn of the Cherubim at the time it was written, but I've gone back and given it a rather large boost. I may regret that, but...eh, whatever, song is here now.]

[My kind of music video. I love cities at night, so honestly, I went into a bit of a trance watching the videosong was nice, but I didnt pay as much attention as I should. I just enjoyed the ride and let my memories take me back...

Lyrics are hard to pin downthe automatic translations arent entirely clear, but lines like I feel cold and frozen and reason has lost control dont paint a happy picture. Not that I was looking for happiness.]

I believe this was the only Tat Ming Pair song that I couldn't find anything about; with "1+1=14" I couldn't find any information that I couldn't figure out on my own, but I can't find anyone discussing this song in any language. There's a few scattered references to it being a very good representation of their style, with it being several people's first introduction to their music, but no one seems interested in analyzing the song at all.

...Or if they do, I can't figure out what combination of words to search for to find anything. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. Turning to automatic translations results in an odd experience: It starts with lines that clearly did not translate correctly, resulting in things that are barely coherent

Lost has received a warning like I'm going to hunt storm in pestering my heart

But then it suddenly shifts to being almost disturbingly direct:

The night is flowing.
I feel cold and frozen.
I am running in my eyes.
I am lonely.
I am fooled.
I have lost my control.
I am in a mess and bump into the car.

The shift in translation, going from obscure metaphors that have lost any sense of meaning to just directly stating what an emotional mess the singer is, is one of the most jarring experiences of any song on the list (in a good way).

The effect is only increased by the inate lyrical dissonance (this feels like a catchy 80s pop song) & also the relaxing nature of the video. Without any translation, it's like "oh hey, a pleasing 80s pop song with a relaxing video". Much, much different experience with even the garbled lyrics being available which is most likely responsible for the large jump in score from the first impression to now.

As I've said many times before, I like chaos in music. Playing multiple songs like this is rather calming; neither song is so loud as to overpower the other and they somehow go together fairly well, while still sounding a bit unnatural (unnatural being good).

I don't like the abrupt end on the song, though there's not a lot you could have done about it; that's just how Rave is usually. All in all, it was a good experience, a good choice of songs to combine, and a good nomination. Yay.

During one of my days off, I turned to Spotify to check my Discover Weekly section to find what new songs it felt I should be listening to. Take a break from the list and refresh my opinions by listening to unrelated songs. This song was at the top of Spotify's list.

...That algorithm knows too much.

Either way, I have no idea what happened the first time I listened to this. It may not be my favorite singer, and he's not exactly hot blooded enough to fully sell the chorus--a true warrior needs a voice that will shake the heavens and strike terror into the hearts of the Gods themselves!!--but it deserves a lot of points for being a perfect theme for any HOT BLOODED ANIME WARRIOR; Kenshiro, Domon, other people probably though at this point I'd just start talking about any character from the Super Robot Wars series with access to the Hot Blooded spell because I haven't seen that many HOT BLOODED anime.

It's another song dealing with depression, but in a far more optimistic way.

You've done enough and you are enough.
Let's fall asleep tonight,
I'll hold you close and show you you're not broken

Is probably the sweetest verse I've ever heard and is worth quite a few points. Yet, inexplicably it ties with HOT BLOODED JAPANESE WRESTLING because there is no way I'm putting either song above the other. Like, there's nothing in common to serve as a point of comparison, nor a significant difference in quality for one to definitively win. This is emotional and touching, the other one makes me think of GIANT ROBOTS making things EXPLODE with SHEER WILLPOWER. It's basically a coin flip which I'm going to prefer on any given day.

...I know I should talk more about the actual song itself, but I'm not coming up with anything right now.

[I cant decipher any of this, but Im pretty sure I like it.]

I can almost get the first verse--something about killing your feelings and working in a factory for ten years, it seems direct enough even with Google Translate turning it into gibberish--but one of the most important parts keeps getting translated as "second basement".

Trying to check people's comments, you get things about people wishing to see Misoshita become the second basement or that his darkness brings salvation to his comrades in the second basement, and I know that's not right.

...Though I don't think you'll ever find a stronger endorsement for someone's work than "his darkness is salvation". But I digress.

Even without a good grasp on the meaning, I feel I'm still able to connect with the song on some level. Like enough of the emotions come through, even without being able to grasp the meaning? I think.

[The subject matter is too heavy to really enjoy, but I cant really find any fault in it.]

1: After criticizing Futures for failing to take any specific political stance and Only Child for only making a political comment in one almost arbitrary line, it's nice to have a song actually go all in with its messaging.

2: I like this a lot more than her self-love anthem "I Like That" that got nominated last year. I actually almost didn't recognize her, but this time her name clicked when I read it.

3: I'm surprised by how well that sermon sampled in the song actually works; besides the refreshing bluntness of the speech, Sean McMillan seems to have a lot of charisma. There aren't a lot of things I could be less interested in than a Pastor's sermon interrupting things, but here, it really just works wonderfully.

[This is probably getting a good placement, but I dont think I want to deal with lyrics this serious right now.]

I like how people are somewhat split on how depressing the end of the song is. I took it as fairly optimistic--life sucks and everyone's going to die, but she wants you to keep surviving anyway ("If youll have lived on then thats all I need") and is practically begging you to live by the end.

But there's the other take, that "living frantically" isn't a good thing and... well honestly I don't care to continue down that road.

At any rate, this version of the song is much better than the original--something about what they did to Miku's voice makes the original fairly painful to listen to. Or maybe I've just gotten use to this version of the song, so it sounds off with other singers. Either way. Decent voice, decent character design, song is...on the upper end of songs that deal with people wanting to die? I mean, this is a pretty high placement for a song that opens with the singer directly admitting they wouldn't care if they died.

Also, three albums is asking quite a lot.

...Though this song may justify trying to find another one as good...maybe.

Either way: I know this is a villain song and they're being sarcastic, but I can really get into that chorus for obvious reasons.

Huh, don't think I've heard anyone talk about the Smile song before. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's just too...happy.

And I hadn't seen that figure before. Neat! I mostly kept up with the cheap merchandise that would be on shelves, but never looked into the higher end collectibles.

[I don't think I understood a single line in the entire song, and I don't know that the two halves went together perfectly, but it was an enjoyable trip anyway.]

Song is definitely in the top 10 most unique songs on the list, but for better or worse, I have absolutely no clue what any of it meant. They're just screaming about Greek mythology, severed heads, disassembled killers, and prolifiic veins. I'm at a point where I don't know if there even is any meaning in this or if they're just stringing random words together.

Some days I love that effect and this song would get an incredibly high placement; sometimes, I find it to just be exhausting. Right now, it's a bit between both extremes--a decent placement, neither as high or as low as it may have gotten.

[Final Thoughts: No matter how many times I listen to this, I have a really hard time making out almost anything without having a set of lyrics in front of me. Not saying that's bad, but this is a song that demands complete attention and is occasionally draining as a result. Which is great when that's what I want, but...not right this second, unfortunately.]

Still love the song, but I feel like this is as high up the list as I want to take it. It's not quite as played out for me as something like "Sound of Silence", but it's still something I listen to on a regular basis and have for years.

[Final Thoughts: A peg above most other songs that I was already obsessed with.]

A technically impressive song, though one I'm not always able to properly connect with and I still find the shift from the beautiful intro to the actual song to be a bit jarring--the shifts between the regular and more mechanical sections of the song can also be jarring at times, but that's obviously intentional.

[It starts off very strong, but I wish it ended sooner. Theres not really anything new happening during the outro. Still a very good song.]

It's a nice song--I had low expectations as I wasn't a fan of whatever Rent song was at Se7en's topic (which must have dropped quite early as I really only listened to the bottom hundred songs or so), but this is an improvement over...

*notices that the song in question was literally this song*

....Oookayyy... this is starting to get uncomfortable now.

*later*

A few plausible theories:

1: I don't think the version I saw at Se7en's topic had the actors and it's possible the performance helped that much.

2: I tried to look up information on Rent to get context for the song originally and it was a bit too serious for my liking; this time I was more familiar and prepared.

3: As much as my rankings fluctuate moment to moment, there's no point in attempting to assign any logic to anything in the first place.

[Medleys are in a difficult place. Unless they do something really different than the originals, they tend to rapidly devolve into a list of songs Id rather be listening to.

I didnt recall the first song, so hey, its practically new...oh, its over.

The longing for a life that is forbidden! I may not be into water, but I can kinda relate to...oh, its over.

Hey, its some guy pretending to be The Rock pretending to be a God while singing a Lin-Manuel Miranda song! Oh, it ended before I could even type that.

Shiny! A villain song by a non-human antagonist? And its a song I referenced last topic (some song title reminded me of Shiny, to a point that I could never recall what song I was supposed to listen to). Oh, the callbacks and the glorious inhumanness of it all... oh bother, were already onto the next...

Its quite exhausting and I wish you had nominated any of them by themselves. As it is, I just want to lie down, listen to the actual soundtrack, and forget about this.]

1: Looking back now, I can say that I definitely prefer whoever is singing Shiny in this video over the original. So that gives some bonus points.

2: Apparently my love of villain songs trumps my dislike of crabs, so I suppose I owe you for that personal discovery. Not that I think knowing this detail about myself will help in any way, it is way too specific a detail to ever come up outside of this one specific topic, but it's still legally defined as a self-rese...self-resolu...

...give me a sec, I'll figure out how to pronounce and spell that word in a second. Revelation! Self-Revelation, yes. A pointless one, but revelation none-the-less.

[Late Edit: Actually I think realization was the word I was going for back there. Self-realization.]

3: I may wish it had the full versions of the songs, but the renditions of How Far I'll Go and Shiny are worth...8-ish points? So even with my disappointment, that still puts this song well beyond where I originally had it.

[Later Edit: Let's take this up to a 9 for a bit. The more I think about it, the more I think I like these renditions of the songs better than the originals (other than the short length) and that should be worth something.]

[Even Later Edit: This isn't the highest increase in placement from Beta to final list, but it's still a very substantial one.]

[Its unique, though I'm not sure how much I enjoyed it VS just appreciating it for being unique.]

Well researching this song was a trip. A vocal jazz cover of a rap song that was performed over a classic jazz song? That was an...interesting musical trip back through time.

I like it, but neither the lyrics or background music make me think of anything in particular or spark a connection. It's not like anything else I can recall hearing so that's neat.

Also, I really wasn't prepared for this song the first time. Since you opened your post with an apology for nominating "weeb" music, I was expecting...uhh...not this?

..also that singer's voice gets a bit too high-pitched at the end. Still good though.

Regardless of what you said when nominating, I found your list to be quite varied actually. In no particular order:

I don't think I'd even heard the words "vocal jazz" before I tried to learn what genre Cantaloop even was. It was an entirely new genre for me and a very interesting variant on a rap song, so I've gone back to listen to it quite a few times for fun already (even if it didn't pay off with a perfect score).

Echoes into the Coffin & Haien Idea gave me a look at a different style of music, with interesting stories (well, what I managed to decipher was interesting at any rate)

An avant-garde metal song that is both more avant-garde and better than anything I found when I was trying to research the genre last year.

One of the more interesting experiences from an instrumental song.

And you did so while using only a little over half your available nominations.

[I really enjoyed this, but dont feel like talking about it right now; its quite late at the time Im listening to this and I need a break.]

I know they don't identify as animals or shapeshifters, but some of those lyrics make me wish this was literally about a shapeshifter war--with the "if you come as snakes, we'll become birds" it's actually pretty easy to read the song that way.

Part of me wants to give the song a 10 purely for that sort of image, but it's just not very exciting. For a metal song, it's really rather quiet and the chorus of HU HU HU HU HU HU HU HU is not as intimidating as they seem to wish it was.

Also, isn't it kinda weird that we have two songs referencing Genghis Khan? Especially songs that are so different?

[Final Thoughts: If this were louder, it'd work as a wrestler's theme. I can just picture someone posing as fireworks go off and the audience starts the HU HU HU HU chant.

As usual, this is another song that's better than I make it sound. I love the choice of imagery here and the repeated animal metaphors, and how easy it is to imagine a magical shapeshifter war.]

While it would be perfectly fine to do so, I think this is just too familiar. It may be the most popular song from the show--or at least I think it was? Like I said, I was never part of the community and I'm a few years behind, so there's a slim chance it's been replaced by something newer and shinier these days--and inspired the endless 20% cooler memes, and I do love it... just not in the mood for it right now.

More seriously, I want to like thisI absolutely adore songs performed by fictional characters and I like Team Rocket, but I hate Christmas music and this doesnt do enough to differentiate itself from the original song. Like, with the Spiderverse Christmas album, there were changed lyrics and bits of comedy in the songs themselvesMiles begging the audience to give him funding for his web fluid, Peter as a failing lounge singer annoying MJbut after the intro, this song is just some voice actors singing a song I hate. I think the only lyric change was "Reindeer" to "Stantler", which is cute, but not cute enough. You get a bunch of bonus points for general concept and singing villains, but theres a limit on how far personal bias alone can carry you.]

Uhh...past me, you do realize pesonal bias is THE ONLY CRITERIA, right? If I wanted to go "Song has Meowth, ten million points awarded", there is literally nothing stopping me?

*ears twitch as she considers moving this song into first place specifically to spite past Raetsel*

Ehhhh... it's awfully tempting, but I guess I don't actually want to do that.

...well maybe not first place, but we can give this a 9, can't we?

Also you have no idea how much I wanted to squeal when you listed it as being by Team Rocket instead of listing the voice actors names. Like I know you don't really get me (no one in this dimension could), but you kinda get me, ya know?

[Final Thoughts: As much as I love Meowth, it's actually James that carries the song as far it went. He just sounds like he's having so much fun with it and never fails to make me laugh. I never make it through the second verse without at least smiling.

But, I really don't like Christmas music--it's cute, it's funny, it's amusing, and it makes it so close to the end... but top 70 is as far as it's getting.]

to be honest i probably should've expected this to some extent as the original has so much more flair to it (i prefer it as well)

Well this was good too, obviously. I love Sonic, I (usually) love joke nominations, and I like getting to do a bit of research--having never heard of Nelward (much less the specific song), there was a little research to be done. Not a lot, just enough to get a false sense of accomplishment from typing something into a search bar.

So this was definitely my sort of nomination.

She's adorable, I love the bunny hat, I liked the repeated use of "chu" before I learned that in this context it's a kissing sound effect and not squeaking--in my defense I had only heard Chu in context of Pikachu or Chu Chu Rocket and knew chu meant squeak there. It was a lot cuter when I thought she was randomly acting like a mouse--the song has gotten stuck in my head a few times, and the simplicity of the dance somehow only makes her even cuter.

[Should have nominated Steamed Hams Inc. to be honest.

More seriously, this isnt bad. An improvement over the original Splatoon song and I usually like those. I dont have much experience with Rick & Morty itselfI tried watching the first season back when TV & Movie Mercs was a thing so I could be prepared for it, but that never coalesced to an actual Game & I would never post enough to participate as a voter anyway, so I lost interest. Show seemed alright? Other than the terrible pilot, I never regretted watching it... just never enjoyed it enough that I felt I had to continue watching it.

[Later Edit: After having this song stuck in my head all day, Ive decided I was too harsh on this and have raised its score up to an 8.]]

I probably shouldn't have this song so high up on the list, but sometimes I need something goofy and fun to relax with. Also I think it's gotten stuck in my head more often than any other song on the list, so that's gotta be worth something.

...Seriously for being an anti-Bush song, I can't find anything that actually points to him directly. Or even indirectly for that matter. It's so vague that you can pretty much use the song as a complaint against any incumbent president, which...ehh...I could see arguing that it gives it a more timeless quality, but I don't think it really works for a protest song. Heck, this song is so vague, I see some people managed to miss the political angle entirely which isn't a good sign; can't inspire the electorate if they don't even know you're trying to inspire them in the first place.

Still, I think I like his voice and the song in general.

Okay, so let's jump to the 8.5s ; we'll likely be going to Level 9 starting at 70th place, so there's not much reason to avoid taking a half-step here.

Truthfully, I again don't want to cut any of the next 7 songs... but I more strongly don't want to cut anything from the top 70 either and that isn't changing, no matter how many times I look over the list. And stalling for several hours hasn't changed things...

I suppose I can't keep refusing to talk about any of my memories forever. Thankfully, there are so many different memories triggered by this, that I have options... let's go with a particularly happy memory that I've never fully shared with anyone, shall we?

I had a dream where I was Kari once. I was in a forest in the Digital World, playing with my new friend--a rather large Yanmamon; for you non-fans, think of a gigantic dragonfly that's typically portrayed as evil and you've got it. But this one was adorable! He was so cuddly, he loved nuzzling and being hugged, and was just the sweetest thing ever. I think I was the only one who wasn't afraid of him and assured him that he was definitely cute.

[Mixed feelings. I wasnt exactly a fan or the sirens and whistles, but I appreciated that they made the song stand out. The lyrics are a bit too tragic, but then they also helped make it memorable. Well start the score at 6 and see where it goes.]

Appparently it doesn't really go anwhere and ends with the same score it started with. </.<

[Late Edit: HAHAHA]

This one is interesting because it's a bit hard to decipher the full intention of the song. On the surface, it's a very
direct and rather simple song. Even an automated translation like Google can get the whole story (ten teenagers go to put out a fire, most of them give up for various reasons, the few remaining can't do anything by themselves and die, people complain about how useless they are and everything is miserable) and there's an English blog that discussed some Tat Ming Pair songs (including this one) that agrees with this.

But if one decides to try tran+slating some other pages discussing the song, particularly by those that were either in Hong Kong at the time or actually know what they're talking about, you can find articles about how the entire thing is a metaphor for the "June 4th Incident".

*Googles*

Ohhh, Tiananmen Square.

...Well this is getting dark very quickly. </.<

Well either way, most people who actually know what they're talking about say this song is a metaphor for that since the group wouldn't be able to confront things directly. Obviously, I'm in no position to speculate on such things, but it is interesting and (from what little I've read about the group) seems more likely than not.

...Let's raise that to a 7 [Later: 7.2 [Later: I should stop saying these things in the write-ups, as we're up to an 8 now.]]. It was actually rather fun trying to research this song, having to look beyond the available translations to find people who actually had context for the song.

Another song to experience a massive jump from my first two listens, to a point that I don't know what past me was thinking. The song manages to be funny & heartfelt, while Lizzo proves that she can be one of the strongest soul singers of all time when she wants to. This is just a high quality song on all fronts.

Also, while I still can't entirely relate to a love song, the fact that she refers to herself as someone who had never felt love before and felt she couldn't...it...*tail swishing*...it was probably the closest I ever came to relating to a song like this, so...thanks.

Yes, I feel this way about a lot of songs, including this one. My last remaining nomination is another, and so is Downtown Train by Tom Waits.

Huh, I never knew that Rod Stewart's version wasn't the original. Tom Waits' version is certainly different, particularly after decades of hearing it as a Rod Stewart pop song.

The repetitive Gimmie the mic refrains grate on my nerves too much to enjoy the song and the rest of it wasnt super great either. Im sure Ill regret being this harsh on it and in later listens it may improve now that my expectations are lowered, but for now, this is the most disappointing nomination.]

Yeah, definitely regret being that harsh. It took quite a while before I could get over my initial hatred of repetition, but once I did, I found a lot to like here. I still like his voice, I still like hearing more from him specifically, there's a good flow to his lyrics, they're mostly easy enough to understand, it's not overly hardcore and works as a tamer introduction to the genre than some other nominations. This was a good pick and I feel like you might have spent quite a bit of effort trying to find another of his songs that I'd appreciate--so thank you for that.

Still not thrilled about the chorus, but I'm at a point where I can appreciate the song anyway.

I don't really want to type anything today. Perhaps I'll offer a few words when it's time to post this, perhaps not.

[Final Thoughts:

"Chris [Constantino, drums] hates this song. If you listen to the whole album, you'll hear that Chris does nothing but hit the drums as hard as he possibly canwhich is what we like. In this song, we reluctantly asked him to use the cross stick technique and he is fundamentally opposed to any technique that makes the drums quieter. Actually, he is fundamentally opposed to any technique at all."

That's one of the most backhanded compliments I've heard. 'No, no, Chris we like that you're opposed to using any technique.'

Though... yeah, if I'm resorting to discussing the band's rather mean comments to their drummer on this track, it kinda tells you that I can't come up with anything really on topic to say. It's another of those "good songs that isn't inspiring anything specific".

The album seems interesting? I had to try at least one more song (the band was described as "post hardcore circus rock", which is just ridiculous enough that I couldn't not click a second song). "Bleeding a Stone" had a good description in that interview I was quoting and also wasn't part of the story like the numbered songs, so it seemed like a good start. Nice anger--not sure it would place any higher or have any more substantial write-up than this song did, but it was worth the click.]

Pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony, pony.

I was never part of the community, so I have minimal experience with MLP fanworks. I've got the Fighting is Magic characters that were converted to MUGEN (Rainbow Dash is best fighting game character of all time) and Mega Pony (because it was a big enough Mega Man fangame to appear on my radar even without the pony connection), but I think that may be it.

Honestly, the commmunity in general is probably fine, but I saw enough hostility there from day one to know to stay out of the way.

Aaanywho, I'm...mildly curious about seeing what other fanworks are available, but also a bit weary about actually looking into it, so who knows? May go find other songs or games or something, may continue avoiding it. Honestly, with the show ending, it may be safe to look around these days--no more show + no more obsessive fanbase = chance to look around through all the old material that is now abandoned without running into certain people ever again. In theory.

Song itself is...unique, shall we say? I like it, but I'm never going to be able to separate my feelings on ponies in general enough to be objective, so there's not much to say about it.

[Final Thoughts: Another song that is better than I made it sound. Sweetie Belle alone isn't enough to have gotten the song this far.]

[Another returning song, this is one of those songs I felt I gave too low a score to and enjoy the chance to give it a better placement.]

I'm not entirely sure why it had such a comparitively low placement the first time around. It's good--cheesy, fun, and it nails the whole "darkness and vengeance without being too serious or violent" thing. It's great and exactly what I wanted.

...a fact I learned several months ago when Spotify listed this as a top recomendation for me and I had to admit that, yeah, the algorithm was right and I did love this more than I thought I did.

(Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide has a similar story--I was dismissive of that track, but after Spotify suggested it randomly one night, I had to admit that everything I hated about the song was charming in its own way. The singer's desparate attempt to rhyme "Donna" with "Toronto" is hilarious when you're able to just enjoy the song without any concern for ranking it or making a judgment on its quality.)

But... I just feel better letting it drop here than delaying it any longer.

I love Kingdom Hearts and I love vocal distortions including backwards messages, so this song has a massive bias in its favor. Usually, that bias is enough to carry it even further into the rankings, but I'm not as into it right now.

#86 [THREE WAY TIE] [#33]:

Name: Something's Always Wrong
Origin: Toad the Wet Sprocket

Nominator: NBIceman (5/15)

(9, 9, 7.5)

[Another one of my favorite songs, Ive had this on several mp3 players and playlists over the years.]

[Original write-up redacted. It directly referenced this song's placement in regards to certain other songs, but now that everything's being shuffled around it was no longer applicable.]

Cutting this one hurts, but old obsessions always have a hard time competing against new obsessions. And as I look over the list of everything remaining, I'm forced to admit that, as of the time this is being written I would rather sacrifice this song than any of the other options.

I came really close to dividing the list between "songs I already know incredibly well" and "songs I don't know as well, if at all" in order to avoid this type of scenario. I just didn't like the way the topic would have looked. The two lists would be of drastically different sizes and, if I told everyone the list was being split that way, it could influence people's choice of nominations--I think people would probably intentionally nominate more songs I already know if there was to be a separate category for them.

Also "ranks 300 songs" is a better title than "ranks an unknown number of songs on two lopsided lists"...

Still, perhaps I should do that next time? Though there are a lot of other gimmick list ideas I'd be tempted to try too... well, doesn't matter right now, I suppose.

[Its nowhere near as good as bunblemans best work, but I highly appreciate the attempt to give me something similar. Will listen to more of this artists work in the future.]

Another song that is very close to being what I want, but not quite making it. Going back to focus tous for a moment:

That song usually puts me in a bit of a trance. It's very relaxing, almost meditative. CRUMPET PLOWS is another high chaos song, but it doesn't quite relax me in the way focus tous does. I'm not entirely sure why--if I had to guess, I'd say focus is more melodic and CRUMPET goes closer to 100% chaos? Which is good, of course I like it quite a bit, but it's not an absolute top tier chaos song.

I definitely want to hear more of this artist's work though. The style gives me hope that listening to more will lead me to a perfect song, eventually.

[The opening was strong, but it got progressively worse. It went from equal parts hauntingly beautiful and insane to just a metal song with nonsensical lyrics. Never terrible, but far from the greatness I originally envisioned.]

That opening was one of the best dream sequences I ever had. I remember walking through the desert towards a giant tower--that place had claimed the life of an old friend, years ago.

((The tower vaguely reminded me of the one from Azure Dreams' cover: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/196675-azure-dreams/images/141734 ))

I was...something furry, though the dream didn't last long enough for me to have a good grasp on any specific form. As I approached, I shed my Earthly form...something with angelic wings and--

UNCLASSIFIED! *mumble* SHAPES IN A GIANT BUNNY'S CRANIUM!!!!

And everything's gone, replaced by some metal band screaming gibberish in my ears. Honestly, the song itself is fine--I wanted to hear more avant-garde metal and this is the most avant-garde-iest song I've heard, some of the lyrics are interesting, it's just...I'd rather have seen where that dream was going.

To a degree, the reaction I have to this is a lot like Tool's Lateralus from last topic. They both had intros that were overwhelmingly powerful and then take the song in a totally different direction than I wanted. Always good, yes, but also a bit disappointing as I'm left wanting something else.

Nominator: Snake (4/15)

(?, "I dunno lets just say its probably an 8 and move on?", Whatever)

[I thought I knew what I thought about the song, but the flatlining at the end has me reconsidering everything about it.]

If it weren't for the ending completely turning everything on its head, I doubt this song would have made it so far. But that sudden flatlining paints the song as being much darker. My first thought was that the character in the song killed themselves; that they hadn't gotten any better at all. I'm reminded of how you should be worried if someone has a sudden recovery--that it can be a sign that they've fully accepted suicide. In which case, this is by far the most depressing song nominated at either topic.

[Later Edit: Grocery had shootings and suicide, but the song never confirms that he actually killed someone (after the shooting he yells at cardboard cutouts, so it's debatable if he even shot anyone; and if he's the same character from Alien, then it's true he caused people's death in that song--but only on accident after his suicide attempt goes spectacularly wrong) & he explictly fails the suicide attempt.

And while there were plenty of depressing songs last topic, they tended to be more up front with their misery. They don't just blindside you like Recovery's ending does.]

...On the other hand, I could be reading too far into it. This was the last song on the album, so it could be a joke--LOL ALBUM IS DONE AND DEAD NOW or something like that. And it is that uncertainty--not knowing if this is meant to be a happy & optimistic song or soul-crushingly tragic song--that I'm rather drawn to. There are things to think about and discuss. Of course, it's still topics that I don't particularly wish to discuss, but still. It's one of the more interesting nominations.

Strangely, I can't find anyone talking about this song in any detail. Most reviews of the album don't even spend a single sentence about this track, and the few that do seem content to just call it a happy song and never acknowledge the flatlining at all. I was so baffled by the lack of discussion that I had to track the song down on Spotify to make sure that abrupt ending was actually on the album version and not something thrown onto the video.

[Final Thoughts: ...This write-up is heavily reminding me of Trains by this point.]

I...never really thought about it. If limited to the 12 official members of the Princess line, I think it would have to be Rapunzel--with a special nod to Aurora for having the cutest dress & Ariel for having the best "I want" song. Though I never watched the Rapunzel TV series, so I can only judge based on the movie itself.

If one cheats and expands the term beyond the 12 that actually count... then probably Nala (she was betroved to a prince & became queen, close enough) or Elsa (who would likely be part of the line, if Frozen wasn't so big that Disney was better off keeping the merchandise separate from the Princess line).

Okay, two things:

1.Let's go ahead and bump things up another tenth of a point to 7.2.

2.I...can't bring myself to cut anything for a tenth song right now, So we'll be stopping at 92 tonight.

Honestly the list is a bit of a mess after this post... some of the songs I've gone back to listen to for fun the most times since the ranking started only had 7s and they're clumped around there. So I kinda need to fix those scores, as I obviously way undervalued them... then there are several songs that were scheduled to be eliminated earlier (one of which started at 191st Place, IIRC) that I've been refusing to remove either and... it's gonna take a few hours before I'm comfortable picking anything for 91st place, to say nothing of tomorrow's eliminations. So... yeah, 9 songs eliminated today and 11 songs tomorrow to get back on track.

...Probably.

[I prefer the opening parts of the song, but its consistently good anyway.]

The opening is so wonderful. It's like walking into an ancient cathedral; I can practically touch the stone pathway, see the light shining through the stained glass windows. I can see the running water (it's an implausible design feature, but I can see a massive fountain that actually runs up a wall, creating a miniature waterfall effect near the back), feel it pour over me as I pass through the water to the hidden area...

...then the music gets intense, like "final dungeon exploring VGM music", It's good, don't get me wrong, but the shift in style pulls me out of the illusion. It switches from feeling like something happening to me, to something I'm watching generic RPG characters experience. And the more intense outro just doesn't seem to fit either of the two fantasy sequences.

If it managed to keep up the intense feelings of the opening throughout the entire song, this would have been in the running for... some high placement, top 10 maybe? As is, it's a combination of amazing & slightly above average VGM type music, which places it around here.

[Squirrel! Video had a squirrel 10/10, best video of topic.

Songs not bad, but Ive never seen the film and know nothing about it, which hurts my ability to connect to the character. Factor in that its loosely inspired by historical events I also know nothing about and things start getting awkward. Its all do you want to talk about Russian history? Or the ethics of taking real people and turning them into a happy cartoon musical, erasing most of the true history in the process? and Im like No! I wanna watch the squirrels! and pout about them not being relevant to anything.]

Also, what kind of dog was that? Those floppy ears and small tail make it look very...rabbit-y for a dog. Of course I know there are long earred dogs, but that breed doesn't look very familiar.

*some Google searches later*

...Some random mixed-breed mutt, huh? Alright then. It's a cute dog either way! wish it had a longer tail though; it's a very bouncy dog with very floppy ears, so it could be a decent alternative form to bunnies, but what's the point without a better tail? One needs a long, fluffy tail to properly swish. That little stub would barely be worth wagging at all.

Of course, if it's a mixed breed anyway, I suppose I could find a combination of breeds that would result in long ears & long tails, but that would be...work. Finding new forms is hardly fun if you have to research. And I hardly need to limit myself to forms that exist on Earth--I could just be, like, a squirrel dog or something. Probably annoy everyone, but whatever, not like many people would be less annoyed if I ran around claiming I was a basset hound than a squirrel dog.

...And don't you look at me like that, YOU'RE the one who picked a video with both cute squirrels and cute dogs in it! You brought this conversation on yourself!

And before you decide to ask "why not a basset hound? You just admitted they had long ears & tails", as I'm sure you are as deeply invested in this topic as I am, I could never be one of those. A hunting dog? Specifically one bred by humans to hunt bunnies? There is no part of that sentence that I find appealing, thank you.

The song is nice enough. It's a fair attempt at mimicking the Disney Princess style of songs and does a competent enough job at explaining her motivations. It's good, though I have a hard time being objective with such a cute video.

#97 [#147]:

Song for you - she -

Nominator: GameBopAdv (4/9)

(6, 6, 7.1)

[I do love distortions, so this comes close to greatness... but its missing something. Not a fan of the way the song seems to just stop.]

This is so close to being something I'd give an automatic 10 to. I love how the song unexpectedly slows down and then becomes more static-y, distorted, and broken. I can almost feel reality breaking down and it's so relaxing... but then the song kinda goes back to normal afterwards? Like, I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had stopped earlier when it felt like the song was breaking apart.

As is... I do like it. A lot. But it's not perfect.

[I feel like I should give this a lower score, what with my low tolerance for repetition and the sheer number of times never gonna is said here, but its catchy and I actually dont dislike it.]

I still can't identify why I like this song.

It's not the video; the video is fine, but setting it an abandoned Toys R Us is a depressing reminder of the passage of time and not going to earn you any points (though I also didn't deduct any).

Not the lyrics; they say "never gonna" 31 times (the full "never gonna love another like you" is said 20 times, so no, only counting instances of the full line doesn't help much)--and when they're not repeating themselves, it's still a fairly standard love song.

Not the singer; they remind of the singer of Salted Caramel Ice Cream and we know how well that song did.

Not Annie; nothing wrong with her (that I know of, I haven't actually looked into her), but you basically need the video to have at least one non-human (or at least an animated human) to get free points due to bias for the video. We've got ponies, virtual singers, crabs, princesses, videos with dogs in them...I'm sure she's fine for a normal human, but she's not getting any extra points based on her appearance.

Not really interested in crowbars or smashing glass, so that's not it either.

And yet, inexplicably, I find myself enjoying the song quite a bit.

...I suppose I like the repeated refrain asking "what if we were real". It's not a particularly deep message, but I suppose it's one I'm always drawn to. I highly doubt that's it though; or at least I'd be disappointed in myself if it was that simple...

Well, doesn't matter. I like what I like, even if I don't know the reason.

Not to demean your feelings, but that's nonsense; the topic is explictly for anyone to nominate anything. There are no right answers, nor wrong answers, nor can a nomination slot be wasted. If you nominated what you truly wanted to, then it was a good nomination--no exceptions. That goes to everyone, no matter what my reaction to that specific nomination was.

You also exposed me to a variety of songs from a genre I didn't have experience with. That is a thing I wanted to happen. So please, don't think like that--this topic would be notably worse if no one took a chance submitting new genres.

Also, not to put anyone else down, but getting anything in the top 100 is an accomplishment. Those songs beat two hundred others to get that far and we entered "songs I like" territory quite a while ago.

Your contributions were appreciated. All of them. And if I do something like this again (and I hope to do so someday), know that your appearance would always be warmly welcomed.

[I like it, but it feels like a fairly standard pop ballad about love. Good, but it never aspires to greatness.]

It's a pretty song and I honestly got kinda excited upon learning that it was the first Indonesian song to be nominated, bringing a chance to experience something new from a culture I don't really know anything about (don't take that the wrong way, I don't know much in general).

But...as pretty as it is, it's just another pop love song. A good one to be sure but nothing about the backing music or lyrics gets me excited or heavily invested in the song.

Also, is it just me, or does the singer sound like an improved version of John Mayer?

Nominator: Placeee (5/15)

[Very good, but too short. That message at the end got me hyped up for things to kick back in at full force, but the song stopped immediately. I so wanted more that I had to immediately seek out the next track...

...I wasnt expecting a rendition of In the Air Tonight to follow, but it got my attention. Nor was I prepared for the following track, Hydra Spawn (it had some of the ominous pressure I seek, though it was also too short). Either way, Im sold on the album and look forward to listening to it in its entirety later.]

Still feel the same way. I'm interested in hearing the entire album, but haven't found time to do so yet. And I don't have anything to say about the song itself (rating the entire album would probably work better for once), so this will be a short & basically non-existent write-up.

[Finally some vocal distortions.]

Great concept for a song and well made. There's a certain beauty to the backing music that I can't put into words and enough vocal distortions to make things interesting, but I find myself either wanting a pure instrumental to better enjoy the ambiance -or- for the vocals to go up to 11 in an attempt to melt what passes for my brain.

As it is? Significantly above average and I would be interested in hearing more of his work, but not outstanding.

======================

DireKrow needs to draw his last pathetic card so Kaiba can end this.

No offense intended, but I'm playing Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force 4 at the moment and wanted a YGO related near death quote and that was the best reference I could think of. Not fully appropriate as Tag Force 4 is based on 5Ds, but I don't think there are any other 5Ds fans here to catch a reference anyway? And I can't think of a good one anyway.
