I love the original version of Hallelujah. The many covers and remakes have their advantages, but most of them completely change the last two verses which are my favorite parts of the song. There's also a lot of...weight, the way Cohen performs it, that I really connect with.

Scatman is also good, though I don't have as strong an attachment to it.

I'm sorry. I really, really, really want to know what you'd nominate (the possibilities are literally limitless) and hate excluding anyone... but 300 songs is already towards the limit of what I can do, so I think I need to stop at 300.

Current plan is three trips through the list: Second trip will have a randomized song order, which will give me enough confidence to have a preliminary version of the list.

Then the final where I start at the bottom of the list and listen as I do the actual write-ups, as a last chance for a song to change my mind on its placement. It takes a while, but it's what I did last time and I feel it gives enough chances that I'm not making snap judgments on each song.

The song is quite recognizable but the band isn't all that common imo.

They're fairly common on the local oldies station--or at least were when I was still listening to them. Besides Shambala, "Joy to the World", "An Old Fashioned Love Song", and "Mama Told Me Not to Come" were still getting regular play.

"Never Been to Spain" occasionally and "Easy to be Hard" once in a blue moon (think it's too old for the station these days, but feels like I heard it not that long ago). Getting six songs to be in regular rotation for so long isn't bad... though I wouldn't expect to hear them often outside stations specializing on 70's music.

Counting nominations on a phone is difficult, but I think we're at 242? That's a good amount, though nominations will remain open for now. No specific end date--either when we hit the full 300 or when I'm through with my first trip through the nominations. Currently I've done through post #35.

Not entirely sure how long nominations will be up for. Ideally, we'll hit the 300 mark; if not, we'll just see where things go, I suppose? The first ranking topic provided quite a few songs that have been added to my regular rotation of songs. I'd like to offer a special note to Snake & ArkOfTurus who both got entire albums worth of songs (Rainier Fog and Be) added to my list, which as someone who listens to very few albums, is actually quite an achievement!

Also an apology to Bane, for having the most consistently underrated songs: shira, Number City, N.M.E., Fake Happy, and Dark Come Soon would all place higher than they did the first time around. While there are other songs that were placed too low (off the top of my head, not all inclusive, and in no particular order: "Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide", "The Moments in Between", "I Love You, Honeybear", "Real World", and a Sam Hui song with a title that I can't type on this device) but no one else had as many regrettable placements as you did. So...sorry? But also congratulations on getting so many songs onto my personal list? It's complicated. *blinks*



Also, as you likely noticed, I may post things with "alternate" accounts. I just don't feel like my "main" right now... and since I'm more comfortable like this, and it's my topic, I'm just going to go with it. At least for now. We'll see how I feel tomorrow?

It's been almost a year since the nomination period for my last song ranking topic and I want more new songs, so here we go again!

TL;DR version

Nominate up to 10 songs. 72 hours from this post the limit will increase to 15 if there are still slots remaining, so come back then if you want more noms. I don't really care about the format of nominations, so don't concern yourself with the preferred format unless you want to.

1: As stated above, you have 10 nominations to start with; after three days, we'll go up to 15. There's a hard cap of 300 songs, though I'll be content with however many we wind up with.

Name is self-explanatory. For foreign titles, it would be greatly appreciated if you could offer something using English characters alongside the correct name like a guess at a translated name, Romaji or other transliteration, or even just an arbitrarily chosen word or number? I'm going to be typing thoughts and notes on devices that may not display foreign characters correctly and if you only list foreign characters then things may show up blank for me occasionally--if you don't have anything, that's fine, it's just easier for me to keep track of things if there's at least one letter, symbol, or number that I can always see and refer back to.


Origin can be either the artist name (if you know it), the name of the media the track appeared in (if known), or blank if you truly can't find anything.

Links can be any site that I can get to play; YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, whatever. As long as I can hear the song, it's fine.


Contest is open to all types of songs: Commercial releases, live versions, covers, parodies, commercial jingles, remixes, mash-ups, VGM, unnamed background tracks you found on some video and can't assign any name or artist to, whatever. There are no restrictions; you may nominate whatever amuses you.

There will be no formal scoring system and all placements will be based entirely on where I want them to be. There will be no attempts at objectivity and my opinion may be swayed by anything. I also reserve the right to have tied rankings this time; if I, for example, want to have a three way tie for third place than I'm totally doing that this time.



There will be write-ups, but you should probably expect them to be on the shorter side this time. Most of my notes and typing will be done on a phone with an on-screen keyboard, so long messages will be...difficult. Not to say that there won't be any bizarre roleplaying tirades, tail wagging, and arbitrary tangents, just...ya know...slightly harder to type them all out than it was the first time around.

I also reserve the right to refer to myself as whatever species amuses me at the time including but not limited to: bunny, fox, pony, wolf, robot, squirrel, naga, and the metaphysical representation of chaotic space who communicates through boxing matches IN YOUR MIND.

...okay that last one might have been a half-recalled Voyager episode, but I still reserve that right. </.<

Also, the ranking itself will probably take longer this time... more songs + harder time typing + less time to listen & type = probably not my best idea. Still, I'll post regular progress updates and have faith that I'll complete it eventually!
