The rapid bass and minor key make you feel like you're on a desperate mission to save all of mankind... or something like that. It feels heroic. Drums are good enough for FM synth. Banger.

Trauma Center: Under The Knife 2 - Severing The Chains Of Fate [Hombad - ELIMINATED]


Manabu Namiki is another of my favorite composers, mainly for his older shooter soundtracks. Liked composer, unknown ost. This song has an epic feel to it, and about half a minute in there's a lot of drums added, which make things tenser - but feel faster.

This is the only song I know in this tier. It's Naganuma doing what he does best - which is hopping from sample to sample with a funky beat. Dead Heat Riders is a Namco arcade racing game iirc.

Lapix is the beeeeeeest. Aw man this contains so many like musical things I love but I can't describe them in words. Gooood choice. Eurobeat but also dubstep. I hear some drum loops in there also. I am confused but happy.

Jazzy 80s. The lead guitar is extremely unexpected but a big welcome. Feels kind of like Sonic CD?

What it sounds like to tune into a radio station. Once the part I like in the song starts around 0:25 it becomes a ambient electronic banger. Around 1:20 it starts to get 'out of tune' although the main melody is always still there. Very experimental.

TIER 1 - [ICECAP]

In most cases, these are the bangers I didn't know existed. Either as good as Tier 2, but I don't know them or better than Tier 2 but I don't know them. There is exactly one song here I know.

What is this guitar loop yesssssssssssssssss. This is jazzy as heck. Reminds me of Passionate Rhythm. Also Sonic Unleashed a bit.

Sounds like 80s. Has a really mellow opening then opens up into a rockin' melody. This song gets more and more energetic as it progresses. Don't like from 1:40 onwards.

Sounds like Shin Megami Tensei meets Ryu Umemoto. Gets into some reallllly good FM synth territory in the second half. I was worried that I placed this too high, but nah, this is good lol.

So I lied sort of. I have heard this, just not the TurboGrafx version - I've heard the Genesis version. Metal as heck. This is generally the sort of metal I like in VGM. Can't actually think of much to say here apart from neat!!!

Mischief Makers - Mini Boss Theme [NFUN - DOESN'T GET A MEDAL. ALSO, ELIMINATED]


Sounds like music for a video meme. Rave as heck. I actually really love N64 music. Also, YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that part from 1 to like 1:20 with the varying bass bits is insane. love it.

999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors - Morphogenetic Sorrow [FBike1 - ELIMINATED]


Sad music. Shinji Hosoe composed for this apparently. I never knew that. 'out of tune' digital ambience. Nice melody. This is one of the weirdest songs in the top 20, because the rest are all fairly energetic or have some groove to them. Also, weird to have two FBike songs next to eachother.

I like the AAI series and Trials and Tribulations a lot more than other Ace Attorney osts, so this was a good pick. Good DS music - also lots of asian instrument choices. I have no idea why I like this. There's orchestra hits, I like those??

Lighthearted metal. Has some pretty good melodies. Lots of melody repetition because it's Um Jammer Lammy. 4/4. Sometimes sounds a bit too harsh.

I love how halfway through the song the 'EEEEEEEEEY- YAH''s start becoming more and more stuttered. In-game they actually progress with the screen you're on IIRC and it's a nice piece of music to gameplay interaction. Great melody. I like my instrumentation a bit harsher, but the ost's generally very soft, I guess, in that sense. I like the lead synth in this song. The bass is great.

I originally had this at like 7 but I realized it wasn't that good. Even though it's funky for orchestral. That's literally the only reason it's so high. Too good for such a short track.

SUCH A BANGER. It's really funky and also slightly reminds me of Megalovania. Balances everything I love - 4/4, repetitive motifs, motifs going over each other, voice samples. Good stuff.

Touhou Tri Focuser ~ Outside The Traditional World - A Pure And Traditional Flower ~ Absolute Lily [FL81 - ELIMINATED]


Feels like Touhou final boss/extra boss music. Lots of overlaying melodies. I like that, it's probably the main reason I like Touhou music in general. Lots of weird chime instruments but also plucking instruments.

This is definitely an odd one for me. Feels tropical. Galway good. Haven't actually listened to this one before this ranking - knew of it tho. It's good. Sort of lounge music. I like ZX Spectrum music.

Gun Frontier - Yun Fao [banshiiryuu/deogenerate - 1/5]


This is a banger. I sort of like the melody up to a minute and 18 seconds in. It feels like epic showdown music. 1:18 to 1:40 is the stuff of legends and it's so short. If the whole song was like that then it'd definitely be higher.

Drakengard 3 - Egregori [xp1337 - 1/5]


I love the whole warped aesthetic of Drakengard 3's music. This song rocks hard. Repeating motifs - and 4/4. Rapid drums sort of cloud the track but make it feel fast-paced. I'm mixed on them. I haven't played a game in either the Drakengard or Nier series.

Chrono Trigger - Undersea Palace [Raetsel_Lapin - ELIMINATED]


Aw yeah synth, bass, drumsssss!!!! the strings are great too here aw man it's hard to think of anything to criticize about this track. I guess it's got loud trumpets. Slow, but really good. I played the DS version of Chrono Trigger a bit.

Marvel Super Heroes - Psylocke [azuarc - 1/5]


Marvel Super Heroes might possibly be my least favorite MVC-series ost. There's a few songs from it that I like, and they're all usually better in later games. That said, it's still in general pretty good. I like this track. There's a vague melody, enough to keep my interest; but it feels pretty scattered. The backing synth loop is my favorite part of the song. A lot of my like of this song is just that it varies a lot.

La-Mulana - Interstice Of The Dimension [MC_XD/DireKrow - 1/5]


I think this is the first time someone's gotten both a game and a song I currently like in the ranking. I think Dangerous Raid might beat this out...? Or High-Speed Beast. But this is GOOD. Feels like Konami - sort of like Red Alert from Metal Gear? I've already talked about 2, but I'm halfway through the original - at Graveyard of the Giants.

This song is really odd. I dislike the first half a minute or so - then once the melody kicks in, for whatever reason I love the song???? UHHHHHHHH idk. Feels like I'm falling helplessly down a hole, but it's also an adventure? Sonic Shuffle is Mario Party but Sonic.

Gitaroo Man - Born To Be Bone [TheArkOfTurus - 2/5]


Wow, it's weird how you've sort of nominated half songs I dislike, half songs I like. Born To Be Bone reminds me heavily of Gurumin's ost, probably because of the use of xylophone. It feels wild west-y. Like a standoff. I don't have much to say about this OST. I like Soft Machine from this ost better.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Battle 1 [Raetsel_Lapin - 1/5]


I love Mystic Quest's ost! It's like a more lighthearted version of other Final Fantasy osts around that time. It's rock-y and metal, while others were proggy and orchestral and all sorts of things. Not my favorite battle theme, that goes to the boss battle theme/battle 2. Still a banger.

Undertale - Another Medium [Dragon66116 - ELIMINATED]


mmmmm delicious 4/4 give me the synth. too much lead up and calm portions. CORE is a better example of what I like. This is still plenty good though, and fits Hotland well. shame I started this before Deltarune came out.

SONG 32

Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru - Proud dust [Pyresword - ELIMINATED]


This was the song that Pyre chose to put in the contest because I miscounted. It's pretty good. Proggy - by which I mean, organ, sounds like odd time signatures, more than four minutes long. It gets too loud at times - like there's too much melody going on. I think if I listened to it a lot I'd get it though.

Not if you know his username everywhere else.

That's overstating it a little bit. I have one username [Flamander] in some places (like here), and another username [Glacier] in others (like on the Board 8 discord server). But for the most part nowadays, I tend to use the latter. I can't change usernames here; so, oh well.

Also, handsomeboy2012, arctic seas is fitting after tundra, right? It's the logical next step.

Ar Tonelico III - Milestone of Memories ~ #2a [xp1337 - 2/5]


This has a weirdly pleasant and natural sound to it. Funky. This is what I like in rpg music. I like 0:30 to 1:10 the most. Lots of weird unusual instruments. I wasn't expecting to like this by the video image, though. Good pick.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops - Calling To The Night [Anagram - ELIMINATED]


Aw man, this is only this high because of like the flute at the beginning. It's so good. The rest of the song's pretty good too, with the drums as the backbone of the track - but that's the highlight. I love it.

SONG 35 [LAST SONG IN TUNDRA]

Auf Wiedersehen Monty - Main Theme [rwlh - 2/5]


Also a song I wish was lower - around the low 40s. I like the bassline, but neither of these guys are particularly my favorite composers on C64. Main melody feels like dance. It's alright. Too long, and doesn't do a whole lot - that's my main issue with it.

Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja - Shakugan Caverns (Deep Levels) [Dragon66116 - 1/5]


Bad 'instrumentation' - this is DS so ehhhhh - but the composition just pumps everything I love in a song - which is 4/4, constant repeating use of motifs. I feel bad having it this high. Should have swapped places with Blackrock Stadium, cause while I don't think this is a 'tier 3 but not good enough' banger, I do think Blackrock is. Feels like Naruto.
