This was before my time participating so before I finalize my plans for next contest I'd like to have a better idea of who to put on my shortlist. This is... half true. I distinctly remember having a conversation with Vis where I said if they helped Zell in the finals over Yuffie that I would help Freya in CXI. I didn't promise a finals run, but I did promise help. But then Freya fluke went out super early (partially because of the Mesh priority) in CXI which I took as "and now my watch has ended" kind of thing. Which I will fully admit was a "letter of the law, not the spirit of the agreement" kind of thing, and some 15 years later I am also willing to say that was a bit of a dick move on my part. So I apologize. And then after CXI like I said I was burned out. CXII I was just kind of there. CXIII I was checked out going in and people probably forget I first "retired" early in that one and probably would have stayed out had the whole raytangate thing never happened. But then I caught that second wind and piggybacked a super niche favorite of mine - fueled on pure spite and propaganda - to a lightning in a bottle victory out of it. In doing so I kinda did some damage to the foundation of the contest so I felt obligated to at least re-stabilize everything so it could keep going. All of this to say that things escalated after CX ended and I took Freya's fluke exit as an escape hatch to the handshake agreement. I always intended to follow through as best I could in CXI, but once that happened I didn't want spend an entire other year on it, and then all hell broke loose. GenesisSaga posted... Aki has a top ten in her, I can feel it. Seriously though the CX Zell run was peak SMFFFC for me and nothing will recapture that. CXIII was close on pure ridiculousness, but CX will always be what I remember about this game. Sure I will always save Zell if he is in and I am here, but if I am here for the long haul I like having a "project" and there will be no project with Zell that is better than CX. You've already got diehard VIII loyalists willing to keep him in through the boot rounds, and while he'll likely never go that deep again I could certainly see top half to maybe even top third finishes in his future. Oh I don't disagree he could reach those goals again, I just think we have fundamental differences in how we play this game. Which is fine. As much as I shitpost and complain sometimes, I truly love this thing and am happy to see it still around. We've been doing this for almost 20 years now, that's crazy to me. And I know some people (like, perhaps charon) aren't the biggest fans of how I've played through the years but I've valued the rivalry and hold no genuine ill will against anyone here. If these things were a hivemind, the victories wouldn't be as sweet. GenesisSaga posted... Still as true today as it was then! I've tried to ease off on things here recently since it's hard for me to not go more than all-in with these things. Like from CIII-CX I was dumb invested in pushing Zell as hard as I could. Honestly if it didn't happen in CX I don't know if it would have. The CX/CXI Zellgamesh runs (with Vivi final boss for both basically) was the result of so much work that burned me out really. Plus I'm on team no repeat winners, even with my favorite of all time so I shifted priorities to giving my secondaries some good runs (some of which also have wins!) so I'm happy overall, even if I'll never see Zell get another deep run.
