The first half is unbearable, because there's nothing to like about spoilt princesses that are certainly acting the part. The episode showcases some of the most forced examples of romance I've ever seen on TV. Which makes bringing up spanking for pleasure on TV all the more strange and kind of uncomfortable. Not even a blink and you hardly saw it battle with Klingons can save this episode. Probably the worst I've seen so far, and that's saying something. Yes, I liked Spock's Brain better. Being so typecast like that must have hurt. A lot. I can really feel that. Which brings me to: The Empath: A more brutal and ruthless episode. The episode wasn't even shown on British tv for over 25 years after initial broadcast! But at the same time, it was still forgettable. The set design is appropriately moody, but literally unremarkable, being just all black. I liked Gem, and she has some amazing fucking powers. The Vians are just goalpost moving jackasses. They reminded me very much of the Talosians from the original pilot. They even look the same! I swear the production crew just had the costumes lying around and told the makeup crew to slightly modify the faces and call it a day, lol. 6.5/10 --- Resident Shiny Hunter of CE 307 Shinys and counting!

Wink of an Eye - Far and away my favourite episode of the season. Star Trek was a good many things, and another one of those good things is that it gives female characters, both hero and villain real agency! Deela and Rael are both tragic villains, and I actually felt really bad for them. If you were trapped in a literally unmoving world like that, how far would you go to save yourself? Which is why I felt not even attempting to save them at the end was particularly, well, cold. But, for them I guess, there really was no good ending out for them. No clear path to victory. Still, they could have shared the Scalosian radiation antidote :/ Like no, Spock, don't speak up now. Let's doom the last 5 Scalosians to almost assured extinction. It's okay, lol. They'll be gone from your mind and the mortal realm in, give or take 27.5668413 earth minutes. Fantastic episode, imo 9.5/10 --- Resident Shiny Hunter of CE 307 Shinys and counting!

My favorite story from that is that the network wanted two versions of the scene, one where Kirk and Uhura kissed and one where they didn't. When they were filming it, William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols purposely messed up all the takes where they didn't kiss by making weird faces and things so that the network would have to use the one where they did kiss. Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner: The romantic heroes that CBS didn't deserve, didn't want, but got anyway. Uhura is best girl. The secondhand cringe during the torture scenes was palpable. Kirk and Spock deserved better foils than the Platonians in this episode lol. And poor Bones is basically....there and that's it. I was NOT expecting the first interracial kiss on US tv to be so icky, either. I know 60s tv had questionable consent at times, but DAMN. But, we get our happy ending, so the voyage goes on. 4/10 --- Resident Shiny Hunter of CE 307 Shinys and counting!
