Baker friggin headbutted his teammates cheering for them. I don't wanna hear jack about him being a bad teammate or some sort of problem in carolina. If nothing else he was nothing but professional and supportive.

I think that's a fair assessment at this point. It's too bad the shine is off him at this point, he's not relaly gonna get another fair chance with a coach that is actually good and wants him at this point.

I hope baker will get another shot somewhere, I think his browns days are closer to who he actually is. He did himself no favors but carolina turned out to be a crappy place for him to land and wilks clearly wasn't interested in playing him.

I think that requires a level of precision that very few people are capable of, and if they are, for the ball to bounce off them in a way that doesn't just drop at their feet is luck-based anyway. Plus as you said if you miss then you have no chance of recovery.

Punt/Kick returns are exciting plays and I do miss them now that they're extremely rare - but for the sake of player safety I can accept it because that's obviously more important.

As for onside kicks, I feel like it's just not many teams get too inventive with them. I feel like a lot of the successful attempts are where the kicking team adds an unusual wrinkle to it other than just "kick it where everyone expects and hope for a weird hop" but maybe analytics proves I'm wrong here and that really is the most successful method? I'm not sure the sample size is really high enough to bear any conclusion out but yeah.

I wouldn't be surprised if weird hops are what yields the best results, because the entire premise behind their failure rate is that they're expected. If something unexpected happens, that puts both teams on more equal footing in terms of recovering the ball.

I think there's only so many ways you can game the kick itself because the receiving team has so much of an advantage: kicking the ball high or having something unexpected happen really is the best you can hope for, and even then the weird bounces are just putting the ball high enough that it gives the kicking team time to contest anyway, so I think ultimately it's just get the ball high enough.

It happens infrequently enough that I am fine leaving it as is. It's making it any more successful than it is currently that I'd rather just abolish it rather than that.

One of the things I love about football is anything can happen and the game isn't necessarily over just because you're up 2 scores with 5 minutes left.

If a team makes 2 successive 3 and outs and then scores quickly each time, sure. At least they earned that through typical football play. Which onsides are not. But if there's not enough time to accomplish that, why should they continue to get chances to win? I get the game technically isn't over till it hits 0 but realistically, at some point there just isn't enough time to do what you need to do to come back if your'e down enough. What's wrong with that?

That's easier said than done when nobody can move until the ball is kicked.

Yeah, this has been floating around for a little while now. This feels like a college gimmick, not something that belongs in the NFL. That being said, it almost feels like the way baseball stopped making teams throw 4 pitches for an intentional walk. Just say you want to walk them and they take the base. Just call every kickoff a touchback and start every team at the 25 for maximum boringness.

I get there's a player safety issue with kick and punt returns, but they used to be exciting plays. I just didn't realize nobody here missed them...!

I meant timing as in unexpected points during the game, not timing of the players during the kickoff itself. Example #1, saints/colts super bowl where the saints were sucking in the first half and caught them off guard with an onside kick right out of the halftime break. IMO a big reason why onsides hardly ever work is because they're ALWAYS expected. If an opponent is lined up in a standard kick return formation instead of an onside formation, that helps your chances of recovery.

If something JUST exists as a comeback mechanic, it sucks. There's fundamentally no difference between suprak's 20 points thing, and an onside kick done with any reliability. You're giving advantages to teams who didn't earn them. There's plenty in football to enjoy without sacrificing the competitive integrity of the game, we can have both. Making rules changes to help losing teams not lose just taints every single game, because if they do come back and win from something like an onside kick, they didn't earn it really imo. They got a fluky bounce.

I think teams should find more creative timing to do it if they want it to work more

I'm fine with more boring if it's more fair, though obv I don't expect anyone to agree with me on that. I get the appeal. It's chaos. But I just don't like the idea of more teams losing after outplayign their opponent for all but 1 minute of the game then losing cause of some dumb fluke. I'd rather they eliminate onsides completely than give more of them.

no way, onsides done any kind of reliably, breaks the game. If a team is down 2 scores that late, they deserve what they get. They don't need to be bailed out.
