I don't think I ever liked getting drunk. I never look back on the handful of times I have been drunk and go "Gee, it sure was fun stumbling to the toilet and puking for the next half hour!" Probably around the time I was 25 was when I stopped drinking because it was Friday and started to be a "one and done" person when it came to alcohol.

I think then it is fine for you to stay away from it and I wouldn't force anyone who was to drink (quite the opposite, I probably wouldn't drink around them). That said, you have to understand that some people don't have an issue with it and have the ability to drink responsibly.

For me, it is anything cheap. I go through at most a bottle of whiskey a year, no way am I going to have my only whiskey for the year be a $15 bottle of Jack Daniels.

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently took a poll asking "What cheese belongs on a cheesesteak?" First place was American, Provolone came in second, and Cheese Whiz was third.

The original Philly steak sandwich, invented at Pat's King of Steaks in the 1930s, had no cheese at all. Later customers began asking for American and Provolone, and occasionally Mozzarella. It wasn't until the 1950s that Cheese Whiz was served, and it completely displaced the other cheeses until the 1970s. Cheese Whiz outsells American by 8 or 10 to 1 at Pat's.

I assume "Cheese sauce" is American since that is usually what I get on it. If I feel less adventurous, I'll get provolone.

Cheese Whiz just seems like a mistake. Like seriously, how do we live in a society where that exists?

I think even cheaper MBs are generally good enough

Unless you need some obscure feature.

I have built many computers, with really cheap MBs and expensive ones, couldn't tell any difference.
I imagine the difference would be in how long they last. Nowadays you probably can have a MB last a really long time because components aren't upgrading at a pace that makes your computer obsolete quickly. Is a cheap motherboard going to last you 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?

Anyways, I have had my MCI MB for 7 years so far and not a single problem. My last one was an Asus and it lasted around 8 years with no issue. Only replaced it because my processor was holding back my GPU, and that was back when if you replaced your processor you needed a new MB. If I want Windows 11 I would have to replace my current one, but no need to do that now since 10 is going to be supported for a while.

By comparison, the same source lists my city (Halifax in Canada) as having an average annual snowfall total of 45-50 cm and an average low of -5.5C, and I wouldn't even say that Halifax gets particularly rough winters most of the time (being coastal and also one of the southernmost cities in Canada).

the only game that's taken longer then duke forever is beyond good and evil 2

yeah gearbox forced them to release, but at that point it had still been in "development" for years

There have been essays written on the development cycle for Duke Nukem Forever, but the point is the version that was released was like the 5th version of the game, and it had only been in development for a year before Gearbox got their hands on it. For reference, the version that got leaked in May was like the 2nd or 3rd version (depending on if the 2D version they originally planned in 97 actually got any development devoted to it).

The better thing to do would have been to cancel the game and start with a new idea, or just give the team the extra year or two to tighten up the game a bit. I mean, who, in 2011, was clamoring to get a Duke Nukem Forever game and couldn't wait any longer?

It was like 60% their fault. Yes, the version that 3D Realms was working on at the time was pretty crappy but:

1) Gearbox forced them to release that version and
2) Gave them a year to do it with no increase in staff, forcing them into a ridiculous crunch.

Want proof of how good it could have been had Gearbox given them more time/resources? Look at the DLC for DNF, which is like 10X better then the base campaign.

I feel like the people that complain so much about the breakable weapons never really played the game much. Yea, it is a thing but I never once ran out of weapons. It is much more about using the right weapon for the right situation and not just sticking with the one that does the most damage all the time. Even the inventory management isn't a huge deal because you start getting additional item/weapon/shield slots pretty quickly almost to the point where you can pick up everything and never run out of slots.

The only legitimate gripe I would say is the lack of dungeons. If you are looking for 8 full size puzzle dungeons, this isn't the game for you. Although with the 4 main dungeons and 120 shrines I think that more then makes up for it. It is more about "bite sized chunks" which given that the game was released on of all things a handheld system as the launch title kind of makes sense. Still, definitely not for everyone.

I mean I love PC gaming and all but it arguably peaked in 2000 with Thief 2 and Deus Ex. After that it just became "Look how pretty my game looks compared to the console version!" Sure, there was some of that beforehand, but games by mid-high end studios no longer were developed with the PC in mind after that. PC games got simplified so they could easily be played on consoles, and console games became more and more like mid-late 90's PC games.

My favorite app is something called "Beyond Menu", it it very basic and doesn't upcharge at all since the restaurant does the delivery and not the owners of the app. Problem is you are at the mercy of the restaurant which means most of them don't let you pay online and you have to pay with cash in person. The fact that I can play Doom in either DosBox, GZDoom, Chocolate, or the 25th aneversary edition on Steam with just the press of a button means more then what I payed for it vs. a PS5/Xbox One. Who said anything about fraud, I am talking recounts. That is why I said 12 years ago because it should have been an answer to the 2000 election. Besides, hacking is only a problem for companies who get lazy with security and the government should be top of the line when it comes to security of all things.

Now the reality might be farther from the perception in that case, but that is why our government is full of morons in the first place.

Sounds like complete incompetence on the shopping center's part to not only assume they could get out of that deal, but to make it in the first place. Like, what, is McDonalds going to go "Oh sure, I'll drop this deal that pretty much bares our competition from existing in the same shopping center as us"? At least put a timeframe on it of like 10-20 years if you are that desperate for a McDonalds.

TopicDid OG Mega Man series have upgrades or was that just X?

Yes, but not in the same way X had them. It was more extra weapons and items. They didn't increase your health bar, or give you extra abilities like in X. They were mostly one-time use or required energy to use.

And it is mostly 6, 7, and 8 that has them. I haven't played the mega man series in a while, but those are the 3 that come to mind, and it is mostly 7 and 8. 6 only has the hidden beat letters and the energy equalizer.

lmao crunch time and day 1 patches aren't synonymous my dude. Do you really think that doing away with industry crunch will make day 1 patches go away? The day 1 patch is part of the planning. Devs don't set out to complete a game 100% any more. They set out to get the bulk of the game playable and pretty enough, and they plan for a day 1 patch to smooth out the wrinkles.

That is understanding the work and what it takes to meet a deadline. And crunch has little to do with it. That's a whole separate issue.
What I am saying is that by planning for a day 1 patch you are basically forcing a release rather then planning a working product. That is not real project planning, that is procrastination. While not directly leading to crunch, it is a huge factor in it.

I would rather a game take 5-7 years to complete and be released without a day 1 patch then 3-5 years with one.

it's not at all

do you think work on a game stops as soon as it goes gold?

no, it doesn't.

there will always be things that need patches and updates. a day 1 patch is a mighty fine thing and far superior over what it used to be like.

which was you would buy just a permanently broken product.

Again, nothing to do with what I said.

A game that requires a day 1 patch didn't account for printing disks in their project plan and also didn't get ample time for quality assurance. Even something as simple as releasing the digital version a month or two before the physical release makes much more sense than producing a non-working product and expecting the consumer to download a ton of updates just to get it playable. That is true if the game was released in the 70's or today.

The modern solution to that, is early access. Produce something that is in the consumers hands, then release updates for it. Once you have something you feel confident making a "permanent" copy of, then it moves out of early access into being a commercial release. Then you can produce physical copies which are the "permanent" product. Also, that doesn't stop you from producing patches and updates after it is out of early access, just you are then telling the consumer that your product is working as designed, and they can use it without worrying about having an incomplete product.

Nope. Having a game go gold knowing you can get it to store shelves by a certain deadline and assure quality with a patch is good planning

That...has absolutely nothing to do with what I said.

Product planning has to do with understanding the work before you set a deadline and being able to adjust and compensate based on unexpected factors. It isn't forcing your employees to work 80+ hours a week just to get their game out before the holiday season, and having to produce a patch due to physical releases preventing you from updating things two days before they ship. A good project releases does everything you mentioned AND the employees enjoy normal 35-40 hour work weeks with PTO and sick time accounted for.

Nah, I don't really eat foods that can be cooked in an air fryer. In fact my oven usually gets next to no use unless I am doing a pot roast or ribs.

Not a fan of early access, but day 1 patches are fine and anyone whining about them doesn't understand modern game development

I honestly feel the opposite.

Early Access is fine, it is how modern software development usually works. Deliver something to the customer that gives some functionality and continue to iterate through development until you complete the project. It is just an evolution of the concept of pre-orders except you have something to enjoy and give feedback on.

Day 1 patches are just poor product planning (which honestly from the outside looking in is a huge problem in most game studios).
