Because of some of the activity shortly before I got nailed, my assumption is that they either recently promoted a fanatical pro-trans mod who is actively and aggressively going after anything they think is even slightly ideologically impure (even if it really isn't), or there's an asshole user going around heavily marking everything in the same way. There was a rash of major mod activity around the time I got pegged.

Another part of the reason why my general response to it was along the lines of "Ehh, fuck this noise. At this point you need me way more than I need you. Have fun continuing your slow lingering death from total obsolescence."

I never dip chicken. Either the chicken is juicy and delicious and doesn't need sauce to make it good, or it's so dry and tasteless that it needs a dipping sauce... in which case, I'm not eating it anyway.

About the only thing I dip is mozzarella sticks in marinara sauce.

Neither are really comedy - they're both action dramas with comedic moments.

Full on comedy sci-fi is nearly impossible to pull off well. Even Red Dwarf couldn't manage it for its full run - and it only really succeeded in the first place because it started out with a creator pairing where one creator was focused on the sci-fi aspects and the other was focused on the comedy bits (and when the pairing split the show suffered).

And Futurama pretty much went to shit after they un-cancelled it - it should have stayed cancelled.

Because a brain-dead mod with the reading comprehension of a 2nd grader saw a pro-gay/trans post and claimed it was anti-gay/trans, and thus modded it for hate speech and hit it with an automatic unappealable 30-day purg.

But the site's become such shit lately that I wasn't overly motivated to fight it anyway. Easier to just stop logging in or posting entirely. Didn't have a ton of motivation to keep logging in even before it happened.

...but I'm sure SBAllen will tell you the site's healthier than ever the next time someone asks him.

The problem, as with most things, is that it's a question of context.

How do you define tragedy? One death? A dozen? Hundreds? Thousands? How directly are you tied to it (did you know anyone involved)? Was it a singular moment, or indicative of endemic problems (is it going to happen again)? How large is the town/city? How financially possible is it to completely upend your entire life and move to another town entirely?

People have been killed in my town (someone I personally knew was shot to death in his own home), but it never even crossed my mind to move because it was never anything that had a direct effect on me. There was a multiple shooting at a local grocery store I used to go to, and it didn't stop me from shopping there. I never stopped going to NYC after 9/11 (even when people were still worried there might be future attacks). Hurricane Sandy killed hundreds of people overall and literally pulled buildings apart near where I live (and some areas were totally condemned entirely), yet I never moved (hell, Hurricane Katrina killed thousands and flooded most of New Orleans, and tons of people stayed or went back to the city after).

If literally every loved one I've ever had were all in my house while I was out and all died from a gas leak I'd probably be pretty keen on leaving, but if the same gas leak happened down the road at the local elementary school and killed a ton of kids I probably wouldn't be too jarred because I don't know anyone who has kids there.

we rarely if ever see marked posts from Hellhole in the queue. And when we do, yes, they get moderated if needed. But that happens very rarely.

the only way those posts are going to get moderated is if someone marks them, and I haven't seen a single mark about spamming from Hellhole.

Yeah, but that just goes back to my initial point. If multiple people marked them, mods would start seeing them, and they'd be obligated to start modding them.

Someone I knew bought 55 acres of land in northern Florida and was able to set things up so he only paid like $5 a year in property tax. He basically had it classified as a nature preserve (so he couldn't subdivide or develop the property with condos or the like), but he was still able to have his own large house in the middle of the property, with his own lake (where he'd go out fishing on a little pontoon boat he had with a drink cooler and a grill on it), and no neighbors anywhere nearby to bother him. And he had a large garage where he could store old cars and work on restoring them as a hobby.

Then just beyond his property was a little town with a private airport (which he flew out of, because he had his own plane), and various amenities (convenience store, bar, etc) for when he needed stuff or just wanted a change of pace.

I also know someone else who lives in extreme northwestern New Jersey (right off the border with Pennsylvania) who lives about two miles deep in the middle of a forest down a long dirt road, and you'd literally never knew they were there unless someone told you. They hunt and fish on a regular basis, have their own little garden, and get huge property tax subsidies because their property is classified as a farm/business (because they have maple trees, and they tap them every year and boil the sap down to make maple syrup, which they sell just enough of to qualify for benefits). But if they need stuff there's a medium-sized town a couple miles away they can go to for food or supplies and the like.

Middle of nowhere can be really nice if you enjoy nature and don't like people all that much.

It's Hellhole, trying to moderate Hellhole is like trying to use Scrubbing Bubbles to disinfect the NYC sewer system.

They would still be ToS violations, though. And it would still be the job of the mods to deal with it. And you'd still be obligated to address issues if other users are marking the posts, because they'd wind up in somebody's queue.

Sure, "mod discretion" is certainly a thing, but "we're not modding you for being an asshole because there are too many assholes" feels like a dereliction of duty sort of scenario. And having a board where asshole behavior is basically ignored and moderation is completely hands-off kind of sets a bad precedent.

If any company makes a political statement that isn't directly related to their core business, it actively makes me less likely to ever want to buy their product or use their service, even if their professed ideology agrees with things I personally believe.

He's the biggest culprit, but a lot of them do it.

You could probably mark them all for abusive or trolling.

Do it across enough topics, and the tidal wave of moderations in rapid succession would probably get their accounts banned.

I think it mainly applies to anyone who made an account prior to 2004 or so who have multiple account names tied to the same account.

It doesn't seem to apply to any of my alts as far as I can tell (though I'm still checking them now). But I also think my main was the only one that had the multiple username issue anyway.

Everyone has always been able to change usernames, if you meet certain criteria. You just have to track down the name change feedback form.

And all the stuff you didn't read sort of sums up why some people have multiple usernames - because older accounts can have different message board names and account names (and you can even have different names set for stuff like contributions - I actually have all my contributions on this account linked to a different account).

They're collapsing everything down into a single username. Which is probably for the best, but I suspect it's not going to go as smoothly as everyone would like.

Ehh, I agree with PO. Old accounts with low karma that show up out of nowhere are always pretty suspicious.
