I have only watched the first episode, but imagine if Lightyear was done like Rick and Morty.

The first episode was a total cringefest that somehow was worth it for the setup; I have only watched the first episode, but I am want to watch more.

Probably because of it's delivery; at it's heart, Rick and Morty is a family show that tries to employ sci fi elements, and I think this qualifies as well in the spirit of Rutherford Falls. I see a bit of Paradise PD and American Dad in it.

There is a fourth wall breaking line in the episode that asks if they are going to be more Futurama or Rick and Morty; the rest of the episode gets hyper-violent while also having a brief musical interlude.

And into the trash it goes. Sorry. But SciFi comedy doesn't work unless it's Stargate.

I thought Final Space had merit; ST Lower Decks is also a real gem.

Four episodes in, it draws inspiration from a history of animation that is a testament to the creators love of the genre; you can see the influences of He Man and Harley Quinn and so many more. It is weird, enjoyable and weird.

Eh, didn't catch it; its less sci fi and more horror / survival fantasy genre anyway.

Solar Opposites is better.

So there is a point in the series were full frontal nudity becomes okay, but keep in mind they live in a tower that is clearly modelled after someone's penis; at one point the character Clitaris opens a wall diagram of the female vagina in an attempt to inform the sassy antagonist Bazarack who refuses to learn about how to make the sex, despite having displayed having done so in the past and also ruling over the aliens as supreme overlord for the past forty years.

It is crass and stupid and though marketed at adults, kids are going to watch it; I think the underlying stories may get lost in the blue humour, but I am compelled to finish the season.

I think the creators are stuck between their creativity and their contracts; they want to tell stories, but have sold the studios "comedies" hoping that they can pad out the fart jokes long enough to maybe tell them. It's an obvious farce in the reminiscence of the Skeletor redubb days of youtube.

The best thing about this series is Lance Reddick as Renzo, I could listen to that man all day long.

Yeah, episode ten kinda confirms my suspicions with fourth wall breaks directly to netflix content censor lawyers; they wanted to go hard but had to tone it down and still got away with a lot.

So I got a jonesing for more of the same after finishing the season and got into season two of Paradise PD (which also had Lance Reddick) might have to go and watch Brickleberry after getting through season three.

Why wouldn't SciFi comedy work? Even without considering the numerous examples people have provided that only begin to scratch the surface of what's out there, on what basis are you suggesting that it categorically can't work?

Season three leans into the surreal, half way through; they are giving it (PPD) a fourth and final season to come out later this year.

Firefly.

Neither are really comedy - they're both action dramas with comedic moments.

Full on comedy sci-fi is nearly impossible to pull off well. Even Red Dwarf couldn't manage it for its full run - and it only really succeeded in the first place because it started out with a creator pairing where one creator was focused on the sci-fi aspects and the other was focused on the comedy bits (and when the pairing split the show suffered).

And Futurama pretty much went to shit after they un-cancelled it - it should have stayed cancelled.

I mean, hardly anything longer than a single episode manages to be 100% comedy, regardless of what other genres it works in there. Even sitcoms have to break things up with a bit of drama here and there to keep things from being too one-dimensional, no matter how funny they are, and that's become even more true in the modern world of direct-to-streaming series that people binge watch, as opposed to only watching one episode a week. By definition, sci-fi needs to spend some time on social commentary (specifically, exploring what a hypothetical future would mean for humanity), which is inevitably going to pull the mood down at times and is at odds with making people laugh, but at a fundamental level that's not that different from what other genres have to deal with.

Just got into the first season of Brickleberry; my god.

Considering where they are with Farzar and Paradise, it's good to know they have been pushing boundaries since the beginning.

Almost finished season two, it is very much on brand for the type of humour I've come to expect. Daniel Tosh as a talking bear works.

That third season... well it ended appropriately, nearly everyone was murdered by advanced space cows and Steve was forced to live in their new cow society.

They are brought back in an episode of Paradise PD but only one due to rights issues.

there was a decline in quality, but the sprinklings of good were worth it. the late philip j fry gives me happy feelings.

that was enough, though. i don't see how they could possibly bring it back after that ending without it being stupid.

Stupid could be extremely funny though, crossing swords worked out quite well on that front.
