The sad older people in the bar is part of the charm. It helps remind you that you still have time not to become one of them. And similarly, it's hard to ever feel like you're too cool for the place (or too uncool). Sure I can see the appeal of going to a hip bar, but if you realize you're the unhip one there it kinda sucks. Also, dives are cheaper

Also my point wasn't really about what does or doesn't cause homelessness. The point I was trying to make is that, yes, maybe there are some homeless people who are beyond helping, but two things:

- Getting to that situation in the first place may have been avoidable for them, and
- Even if it wasn't, there is a lot of work we could do to make it so fewer people are homeless, and we shouldn't let the "bad ones" stop us

Which brings us to the actual main driver of homelessness: housing unaffordability. The below graphic from a report by Zillows economics research arm may not be as gripping as Quinoness prose, but it tells a more accurate story about why weve seen such dramatic increases in homelessness over the past several years.

I'm not saying this in any way to discredit it, but kinda funny that a company that got caught mass purchasing homes to try to flip their value up is doing research on the effect of housing prices on the homeless

A common stereotype of the homeless population is that they are all alcoholics or drug abusers. The truth is that a high percentage of homeless people do struggle with substance abuse, but addictions should be viewed as illnesses and require a great deal of treatment, counseling, and support to overcome. Substance abuse is both a cause and a result of homelessness, often arising after people lose their housing.

What's your point? You really owned me by posting a homeless advocacy sheet lmao

Do you think that I don't also think our addiction and mental health treatment in this country is part of the problem or something

People don't just get addictions out of nowhere, nor are mental illnesses some constant thing in your life that is always at the same severity. Everyone always love to talk like people are homeless because of those problems, as if it's never the other way around - whatever circumstances of homelessness leading people to develop mental health issues

Allowing people to be homeless in a country as rich as the US is a fucking crime. Nobody said that it's easy to deal with homeless people but having more cops to, at best, push them off the subway for a few hours, and at worst, actively abuse them, isn't accomplishing anything.

Sadly even at my most ideal I don't feel like there is much hope for the people who have the baggage of decades of undiagnosed/untreated mental illnesses and/or addictions. But we should still be doing everything we can to help them, and even if that is a place where we have to cut our losses, are we just never going to eliminate homelessness? At least maybe there'd be a chance that in future generations we won't have people getting to this point where it seems like they're beyond help, but we have to be willing to start

I've started counting calories recently and I find it hard to get enough, even with three meals a day and snacking. Though of course, as you might guess, the counting coincides with me making a more conscious effort to eat healthy. The real problem is all the little things that add up (and sometimes big, but not core to a meal). Soda, dessert, alcohol, overusing oils and sauces, etc.

I'm not a large dude by any means and it takes me like 2600 calories to roughly stay around the same weight. I don't find three meals to be excessive for that at all - breakfast is usually lighter, around 400-700, say that lunch and dinner are around 700-1000, that still leaves some buffer (given that if I have one of those meals in the high range, I'll probably be having another in the low range that day)

this topic isnt an open endorsement of socialism or communism because many posts seem to be criticizing those government structures.

Who cares what people think though, especially when it's primarily radical right wing people like KKrazy_Kirby and Kyuubi. If you don't believe in them that's fine but this makes it sound like you just view them as "taboo" and that's exactly how capitalists want it to be framed so there's a perception of no viable alternatives

I don't think you are bullying but I also don't understand what the point of this topic is if you're gonna be like "socialism isn't relevant".

I'm also curious how you think crypto and NFTs are going to save us. People being lucky/shrewd enough to cash out on speculative investments isn't some new futuristic concept. How exactly is this going to scale, or get out us out of capitalism when people are already doing it under capitalism. The only argument I've really seen that's true and not just distorted info/pure speculation is some people who wouldn't normally be wealthy were able to build wealth. But I fail to see how having a few more rich people is really a radical change from the current system

"Contribute to society" is a dumb capitalist idea, everyone has intrinsic human worth regardless of what they "contribute".

Anyways, I'm a web developer, so no, not really. I do stuff that is very niche and just adds some minor layer of convenience to people's lives. I don't understand how we all get paid so much but people in minimum wage jobs contribute stuff that is way more valuable to everyone's day-to-day life. I mean I can't really complain about the paycheck but like chelsea said it's totally unfulfilling
