At that young of an age, I would guess it's just other people pointing out that they do things associated with the opposite gender and prefer to make friends with the opposite genders, since sexuality is neither realized at that age nor does it have any relevance towards gender identity.

Anyway, my experience has been that Asians are just as or more racist than Americans, so no shock here.

Define Asians. I feel insulted that you'd lump all Asians together in one whole collective group of people.

I'm not trying to, but the ones I've interacted with have more often than not failed to understand political correctness as it is in America whether they were recent immigrants or not. Obviously there are billions of Asians - I can't judge them all based on the few I know - but from the interactions I have had things that would get my white ass in trouble have been said with impunity by Asians I know coming from all parts of the continent other than Russia (where they, too, are too white to say the things I wouldn't dare consider). I see lots of racism in anime that wouldn't fly here, I hear Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indian people saying things I'd get my ass kicked into the ground for... Just in general people of Asian countries I have dealt with can say things I wouldn't let myself think, and that may not define the whole group of some 2-3 billion people but it does show how much more casually the topic is handled outside of the US.

Outside of Clerks 2 and a Chinese girl I knew, I never heard the term "porch monkey" used. Outside of a Vietnamese girl I knew, I never saw anyone laugh at someone who was told not to drink coffee while they were growing up because it'd make them blacker. Things that are absolute taboo among European Americans due to past oppression seem to be anything but from the Asian Americans I know, as well as some of the Asian culture that gets imported here.

Of note, SW has sponsored GLAAD events and has been endorsed by GLAAD. If they say that the actions of these two individuals were excessive regardless of gender it may be a wise idea to give them the benefit of the doubt unless proven wrong. If evidence surfaces that shows they weren't doing anything excessive or they claim to have evidence they refuse to show, then we can say there was discrimination.

TopicThe Game Company Contest 2011 WINNER: SquareSoft
ChichiriMuyo
09/27/11 4:39:00 AM
#71
Odd result, having a company that hasn't existed for about a decade win. SE has continually declined throughout its existence, so that wasn't winning material. Even still, as the "winner" here, we do need to keep in mind that SquareSoft was ruining their franchises to one degree or another long before the merger. I liked CC, but it caused huge outlash. I liked Xenogears but I didnt get to the second disc, and if I did then according to most people I would have raged. The series they had that I really played has been flogged mercilessly since then. By them, not players.

In retrospect I cannot understand how releasing three great Final Fantasies plus 8 made them so well loved in the PS1 generation even with XG and CC appealing to a few other fans and (a large part of) the rest turning off a lot of fans (other than rereleases). Well, there was Bushido Blade I guess. But ruling a generations single-handedly with that?

They did some good stuff, oh, 15+ years ago (that I haven't mentioned yet). But does all that really carry? No, it doesn't.

SS is dead.

It has been for a long time, and sadly it would have happened merger or no because that was the direction they were moving... and still are. SS was on this path to ruin and took Enix along for the ride because, hell, why let their ips die and go unused when they can be bought out cheaply (merged with, whatever) at the expense of keeping around most of the employees that made them work originally.

The glory days are gone, and SquareSoft is waywayway gone. And while this may not have been worthy of a final match up to begin with, the "winner" here isn't being praised for their accomplishments so much as their opponent is being flogged for seeking a broader base. Such a shame.

I seriously can't think of a way to respond to this that doesn't come across as mean to you, so I'm instead going to state that people are not voting for the games because they have Link in them, and the reasons why should be really obvious.

I would respond as such: LOL. Yes, if that were remotely true. No, for obvious reasons you aren't considering. But maybe that's just me. You know, because I realize it's the name (and gameplay of) "Legend of Zelda" that sells and not the character Link. And that these contests aren't based of the best, but the most popular in head-to-head match-ups that represent a small fraction of possible opinions.

Well, right. That's exactly what I'm saying. He was arguing that Mario/Sonic was fair to be excluded since nobody would vote based on the in-game rivalry.

And in past contests there has been a disclaimer to point out that fact outright. It's always been a "popularity contest," not a "follow this obscure definition that not everyone will agree with" contest. He's throwing out the popularity and enforcing the definition when the definition is arbitrarily his own... but you already get that and the response I made was for those who don't and maybe could.

The point is that people are voting for the games, not the character.

Link is not the undisputed greatest character of all time. He is literally a blank state, and the voters use him as a stand in for the games themselves.
That's not a bad theory, but who's to say people aren't voting for the games because they have Link in them? Are you saying that OoT is the undisputed best game of all time despite Link? Was Majora's Mask truly the best game in the last contest?

Just about every single person who has ever played a Zelda game. Hell, way too many people think his name is Zelda to even consider that they are playing for his "character."

I don't agree with Link's utter domination of GFaqs contests, but I'm not against it either. If the opinion of the voters is that Link and his games are better than their competition, fine. The chance that his popularity stems from beyond the games he is in is nominal. I'd have a problem if a comic book hero like Batman won a contest, as it would be difficult to discern if people were voting based on the character from his games or other media.

You missed my point.

People are voting for the Zelda games, not Link the character, since he... Has none. Thus, they aren't voting as intended.

Which means people voting for Mario/Sonic because of the system rivalry instead of the Olympic games would be nothing new or extraordinary.

And would in fact be the standard, as no CB champion has won based on their character. The most vibrant of the Noble Nine was two dimensional at best (Snake or Cloud, no one else in the group even hits this low of a level of personality), while the rest were one dimensional or blank slates with no dialogue (or even expression) whatsoever. Hell, someone tried to give one of them a personality and the backlash was pretty big as far as gaming goes. And let's not forget, a BLOCK one the character contest once.

Nope. No one votes how they are supposed to at all. That doesn't mean nominations should be thrown out because human nature contradicts the way one single, solitary soul believes every one else should act.

Wow the board didn't even whine this much when the female bracket was announced.
Ngamer64: Zylo, you're making less sense every day

The female bracket was filled to the brim with fodder and the overall result was a given, but at least there were a few matches up in the air. Every rivalry that has the potential to seriously upset has been shot down without a single thought by someone that doesn't know what makes contests exciting (hint: it's not accurately predicting the results of a match where virtually no one cares about the results).

He has, in short, made the whole contest the females bracket when the rules very explicitly say it should be something very different. I do believe that someone else mentioned the quote contest before, and I must say that at least when that was cancelled the reason was because the nominations in no way reflected the expected outcome. We weren't told "All your base are belong to us" wasn't a valid entry because the engrish made it a terrible entry, we were told "too many people expect AYB to be an automatic entry and aren't nominating it, so we can't even get an accurate view of what might win." Bacon's doing the former, not the latter.

Seriously, what it comes down to is this: Bacon is rejecting nominations his own rules say are valid because they might actually surprise people. Surprise value is the one thing the contests have been lacking. He's not saying they create flaws in the bracket that highly skew the seeding process, like the way everyone tried to game the system with the quote contest, he's saying that potential surprises aren't welcome. And this is the guy that let L-block in. F'in ridiculous.
