I dislike the anime version, but I kind of like Pikachu in Red/Blue. and catching a Pikachu in Viridian Forest is my preferred way to beat both Misty's gym as well as the overabundance of birds and Zubats in the early-game.

MGS1 had far better characters than MGS2. in particular, the bad guy squad felt like a functional team. It is also guilty of introducing the tranquilizer gun to the series, and it never really recovered from that.

One collectible that a lot of people miss is the Aeon cube in area 4 where you're being chased. it looks a lot like an aeon refill, so it's easy to overlook when you scan the map.

map stations purposefully don't tell you some parts though. they never give you the whole map.

so, thoughts about SR.

having to hold L to spider ball was horrible. The Queen Metroid fight was physically painful for this reason. terrible.
The metroid fights were really cool, but they probably did too much damage. Also, the Gamma metroids in area 3 running around outlasted it's welcome
The enemies lack variety. AM2R did that way better.
The ares lack identity, especially compared to AM2R, though that game has some of the best worldbuilding in the 2d series, so it's a tough act to follow.
the music was bad. it had very little identity. Lower Norfair remix was cool but almost never consistent. best music was probably the Maridia remix in area 5.
the Aeon abilities were mostly ok, but not very special. being given the Area scan so early sort of removed a lot of the exploration, not sure how I feel about that.
Melee counter was a bit too powerful against normal enemies and made a lot of the combat very reactive, this stopped after getting some of the higher-end beams.Against Metroids it was fine.
waiting for the teleporter and elevator cutscenes got a little old when going for 100%

I did have fun, except when I was upset about the control scheme. I don't think I'll be replaying it much. if it sets the stage for future 2D Metroids, then that's fine. but in terms of being a "classic" 2D metroid and a remake of Metroid 2 it's eclipsed by AM2R IMO.

I wonder where Scars block will end up. on one hand, the whole war narrative and uncertainty about whether it would be Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia was cool, but Mirrodin Besieged was sort of bland. On the other hand, New Phyrexia was crazy OP. To this day it remains the set with the most format staples in it, and the printing of Batterskull brought Caw-Blade to it's final, terrifying form. The printing of Deceiver Exarch meant the post-ban period was a Splinter-Twin format, but that's more on Twin than Exarch.
