My niece would just be sitting around while my brother commanded all the attention, cataloguing all of the trinkets and gizmos his wife buys him. The larger issue is that my brother seems to genuinely think that an entire lifetime of making everyone around him miserable becomes null and void because he had a daughter. Despite both my mother and I going into great detail into how we feel, he doesn't even acknowledge it. The last thing he told my mother on the phone before blocking her was making a mockery about my other brother, who had passed away almost a decade ago due to suicide. This is the same person who beat his last girlfriend and then forced her to come help us come up with bail money once he got arrested for stealing a friend's car while drunk and crashing it into someone's yard. --- [obligatory signature] |

It's weird to me that you can emotionally disconnect from his daughter but not from the things he says to you. I don't know most the context, but from what you're saying, this part seems self absorbed.The terrible things he's said and done ended up giving me long-lasting emotional issues. Back when I could somehow afford therapy, most of it was unpacking and going over everything he's done to me. It effects me in a "visceral" way because he will never, ever face any type of repercussions for what he's done. I'm "disconnected" from my niece because the few times I've seen her, she barely acknowledged anyone's existence. My mother and I were convinced she had some type of developmental delay as (as of the last time we saw her) she still wasn't talking or coming off as present. Interacting with my niece literally consists of sitting at my brother's home and taking emotional abuse while my niece just occupies space. Taking the emotional abuse just isn't worth it. He doesn't even want to be involved with us, either. When we made an attempt, it was literally just us sitting at his home while he showed us electronics that his wife paid for. When we were younger he hit me a few times, but in our adult years he's grabbed me a few times. The last memory I have of him and my other brother was him attacking him while he was passed out of the couch, drunk. He's a very large individual who has a very intimidating presence. I was always afraid to defend myself and even as an adult, I'm terrified of him. --- [obligatory signature] |

What makes it frustrating is due to how my brother manipulates people, he's never going to have to face the consequences of everything he's said and done. I have zero interest in his family and as sad as it sounds, I'm almost indifferent towards my niece. I obviously want her to be happy, healthy and live a great life, but my brother has been such a horrible person throughout his entire life that I associate the prospect of visiting him and his family with fear and anxiety.
