As far as the shame thing goes, in Asia

As a Korean who grew up with 1st Gen Korean-American parents IN Korea, the societal stigma against being fat actually IS part of what keeps the rate of increase lower

And for a long time obesity was rapidly on the rise because of better living conditions; children had more to eat, for example.

Korea is, however, a very homogeneous nation even when it comes to immaterial things like culture and societal values - compare America where we are SUPPOSED to be a giant mix of things

Being fat is so stigmatized, fat people's appearance is often cited as a shame against their family

- It's very often done in a dismissive and shaming way, either explicitly or implicitly. This is harmful, so emphasis should be on supporting rather than shaming or denigrating.
- Weight isn't really the fundamental problem, so focus should instead be on health. You're right that it's got to do with lifestyle, what I take issue with is that IMO you make it seem very much like a personal choice. Often times, healthy choices aren't nearly as available to poor people. Healthy food is more expensive, they don't have time to exercise with their kids, etc. So it's a structural problem of lifestyle. That's what you're saying as well, I guess, when you say it's societal, so it may very well be that I'm just reading you wrong about placing too much blame on individuals.

1. if you're large enough for people to comment on bluntly, you might actually be pretty fucking big. like, to a concerning extent. At that point it would make more sense for one to want to correct this instead of acting like they were attacked. But most people don't make sense, do they?

I am not one to normally pull this card, but fucking deal with it. It's who you are, it's what you are presenting, and if you can't accept that then obviously something needs to be done. I'm happy some of these interviewees finally managed to achieve body positivity, but that doesn't mean they are healthy either.

2. I'll point out again that the op-ed did not specify if any of their interviewees were one of those healthy fat people (as far as i saw - as mentioned i quick read. i'm going to assume they weren't, as such)

3. Things like "healthy food is expensive" is sort of a myth at worst, misleading at best. Fresh produce isn't necessarily more expensive but it's definitely less accessible for people living in impoverished areas (if you don't know, look up "food deserts")

the societal/structural issues are definitely real though. Some people just don't have the time or means, and one of the easiest ways to cope with stress is to stress eat. I really feel for those people, but it's not like none of them could work on it if they tried

4. I do agree that the institution has to do more for people if this problem were to really go away - that's is one of the key problems with obesity as it were

Anybody give me a tl;dr or is this just a long bullshit article without actual points?

the biggest points:

- doctors suck at giving fitness advice but people keep asking them for it/they keep giving it (should be well known but doctors have to make money)
- not all fat people are unhealthy (tho the article does not tell us whether or not the many obese people they interviewed were one of these rare people)
- stress makes eating more fun (not sure who didn't know this)
- some institutional and lifestyle factors make losing weight harder

I'm glad you finally decided to read the article instead of just talking

was working at the same time, finally found a free moment to quick read
you and others made it seem like "body shaming" was the focal point of the article

when it's really just about how everyone is pretty much misinformed about obesity and how to approach it, even doctors

(something I was personally aware of myself - i never ask my doctor about my weight even if he comments on it)

But you're still not gonna convince me that "people reminded me that i am unhealthily large so i willingly at a tub of ice cream and felt so ashamed of it that I did it again" is a valid excuse lmfao
I mean you can only go with that for so long
at some point you have to make that personal decision to move away

It's very much like a drug

This entire article is about much more than body-shaming so idk why the discussion mostly turned there

I've skimmed through it a second time and it's pretty clear they are putting the onus on the medical community for perpetuating outdated views on fat and health

There's a short section near the middle about body shaming but personally those are just lol anecdotes

And finally, I basically parroted what the article itself concluded with: It's a societal, lifestyle issue.

And, in a cruel twist, one effect of weight bias is that it actually makes you eat more. The stress hormone cortisolthe one evolution designed to kick in when youre being chased by a tiger or, it turns out, rejected for your looksincreases appetite, reduces the will to exercise and even improves the taste of food. Sam, echoing so many of the other people I spoke with, says that he drove straight to Jack in the Box last year after someone yelled, Eat less! at him across a parking lot.

Yeah, THAT'S gonna make me want to sympathize with motor-scooter riders more

Me: "They cite studies that show..."
Bok: "This isn't happening"

They cite studies that show that the medical community is "shaming them" by placing emphasis on losing weight to be healthier, and that this alone isn't working to stop obesity from rising because people then feel bad that their diet stopped working when they stopped doing it.

Gee.

What a shocker.

In fact the more I continue down this article, it's becoming more apparent that the issue is bad medical advice and relying on physicians for dieting/weight loss advice

Contrary to popular belief, doctors are not automatically weight loss experts.

And what about differences in diet, poverty, etc?

obesity is on the rise in asian nations DESPITE poverty
diets are changing with increased Americana consumerism enveloping the globe

and this all goes back to what i said

It's a lifestyle issue. If people lived healthy lifestyles that didn't rely on the food pyramid model from the 1950s and didn't down soda like water and ate food that wasn't heavily processed with added fat and sugar they wouldn't be as fat.

And I still stand by that "fat-shaming" is barely a fucking problem. Yeah it doesn't work to discourage people, but I'm disinclined to believe it makes the problem "worse." As I said before, body-posi media encouraging fitness is SO popular now
This is not on anyone else anymore - society has changed and obesity is accepted more than ever.

If fat people feel bad about being fat, they should do something about it instead of having the emotional strength of a 7 year old and succumbing to stress eating because your certain parents sucked at raising you through adversity

Works for countries like China, Korea, Greece and Japan. Places like NA and UK's public opinion on obesity is actually more lenient than most other places precisely because it's more common.

Actually, no it doesn't. The article mentions that not a single country in the world has managed to reduce the rate of overweight/obese people.

That's a really funny way of saying "the standard of living and accessibility to food across the world has dramatically increased over a short period of time"

i'm a fat person and i deal with insecurities regarding my body shape all the goddamn time

In fact, fat people who treat their obesity handicap like a congenital defect or amputation SHOULD be shamed.

If someone without a hand can freely joke "Give me a hand, mate?" and then laugh about
but a fat person can't hear "should you be eating that?" without getting tossed into the depression pit

what does that say about people?

When they say that science shows diets rarely work, what they mean is that studies show most people don't manage to complete them (iirc the number cited was absurdly high, 95-98%). And even when people do lose weight, they're more likely to gain it all back. So going on a diet, like Atkins or something, is likely to fail.

It's a lifestyle issue
Committing to it would be easier if society enabled fitness instead of gluttony
