Yeah the inventories are restrictive at the beginning. Oxygen, Carbon, Ferrite Dust, Hydrogen and Sodium are the big ones used to maintain equipment and craft components, while chromatic metal (refined from copper among other ores) is used a lot in blueprints. Tritium you get from destroying asteroids and is needed for your ship thrusters. Then there are other materials that are needed for specific recipes. All that said, most of these resources are not hard to find. You can safely sell plant and animal products like starbulbs and mordite, while gathering other materials is just a matter of finding planets with the correct biome. The alien race commodities (Casings, Effigies, Relics) you can give to aliens of the corresponding race to increase their affinity, which will open up extra dialog options when interacting with them sometimes. Each time you visit a new Space station you can buy a new inventory slot from a kiosk on the side with the ship upgrades and such. You can also find those same kiosks in the wild and repair them in order to receive a slot for free. Starship and Multitools can be upgraded using either credits or storage modules. You're limited in the amount of bases you can build (16 I think) so I think it's best to have one big one where you keep your resources and machines and just build small ones on planets you plan to come back to (such as planets with It's up to you whether you want to do the Artemis story or other quests first but I will say to do the Base Archives side missions if you haven't already since those unlock a bunch of blueprints. After that, in the Anomaly there is a ring of merchants and kiosks across from the room where you talk with the Korvex guy where you can get more blueprints. Travel to planets/galaxies with the resources you need to build what's in the blueprints. You can buy a better ship or trade in your starter ship by talking to the NPCs that fly into Stations. You can also buy inventory slots for your exosuit (though keep in mind they get more expensive for each extra slot) and multitools as well. Gameplay is mostly planet traversal while foraging resources for crafting and maintaining your life systems with some space flights and fights (both on and offplanet) in between.
