War takes too long, agreed -- I try to go for the least amount of military presence possible, just enough to deter invasion.

I don't understand why a frowny face for that
Great Merchants share a great people points timer with Great Scientists and Great Engineers, most importantly scientists, so getting a great merchant delays further Great Scientists for a relatively minimal gain.

I think it's after 6 pop an Indian city is better happiness-wise than any other civ. War elephants are fun, Mughal pretty negligible but a decent civ with the long-term overall happiness buff; can be a slow start on grasslands and the initial expansion happiness malus.

The largest army means nothing when all they do is die to your superior tactics and ranged might. On another note, I think Greece is my least favourite AI to play against; Alexander always does alarmingly well.

It was songhai, your screenshot showing all their delicious jungle culture shows it. Kill them. Do it.

I had picked the +1 culture per plantation pantheon so that was my thinking on it, but I'll keep it in mind for the future.
Assuming Songhai beat you to Sacred Path other than God-King you really had nothing so can't blame you.

It's too late for this game, but plantations for bananas are a bad idea. They're better as just naked tiles for future university bonus, and saves worker time.

Iroquois are the trash civ, Shoshone are very strong.

Edit: As you mentioned. Their unique unit is negligible, their unique bonus doesn't work as advertised, and their unique building is a downgrade almost always. Shoshone however have a great unit that leads to a good start, extra tiles which leads to a good start (good starts snowball, this is good) a defensive bonus that lets you defend your good start, and a cav unit that's good multiplayer and I've never found relevant single player but oh well.

February 2020 feels like a lifetime ago.

Feel this. I started a new position and was immediately thrown into insanity and have at least on the ground floor carried my company through this... I can't believe it's been only 3 months. At least now I feel I'm actually ready for anything.

Prior to that was prob 2016 for a year of travel, beyond that 2011 for end of uni.
