I can't help but see the word problematic and instantly think "first world non-problem".

You'll never see "Lack of access to potable drinking water is problematic" or "Deadly tornado is problematic".

It's just a good way for me to instantly overlook whatever is attached to the word.

Charlie Day's natural tone is probably most similar to his character... But that's kinda the problem. He doesn't have to change his voice, but when I hear him I expect him to go rat bashing in the sewers instead of jumping on goombas.

Easily the standout performance. The man deserves a bunch of awards for the effort he puts in. You can rarely tell it's him when he does voice work.

I had forgot who did the voice and had to look it up. Like damn Key you just gotta kill it in everything you do.

By far the most jarring to me was Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. I think it's about time actors voicing characters in animated movies be forced to actually voice act.
For every brilliant casting like Gilbert Godfried as Iago, there is about a dozen of Seth Rogens voicing Pumbas or Donkey Kongs. Absolutely awful casting and zero effort to actually portray a character. Donkey Kong and Pumba shouldn't be interchangeable.

I haven't gotten to DK yet but I can't imagine Rogen doing shit to alter his voice.

Keegan Michael Key is killing it though.

Honestly Charlie Day as Luigi is wayyy more jarring than Chris Pratt as Mario.

I like how they at least explained the voice change and gave Charles Martinet a cameo as Jumpman. Still would have preferred him but Chris Pratt got wayy too much hate. I can barely recognize it as his voice.

Also like how it reminds me of the original Mario movie with them just being normal dudes.

Thing is, even compared to contemporary video game movies, MK had the cast with the least star power.

It was the 90s, not completely fucking up a video game movie back then was the rare exception. I like to think they just got lucky and managed to pull off a decent (not great) movie in spite of themselves.

This is coming from someone who is not much of a Mortal Kombat game fame, but loved Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter 2: I saw all three of these movies in theaters when they released, and let me tell you... SMB and SF are so bad it's good at best... technically, those two movies had a bigger name cast than Mortal Kombat, but Mortal Kombat managed not to fuck it up until the sequel.

Seriously, even with actors like Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Jean Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, and Raoul Julia... they couldn't make the confused messes of Street Fighter 2 and Super Mario Brothers into even okay movies.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat with barely any star power... aside from washed up Chris Lambert and not well known Brigette Wilson (the hot chick from Billy Madison, that's about it) they did what should have been super easy - just make a martial arts tournament film. For god's sake, you can just watch Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon.

Not to mention Billy Madison came out the same year as the Mortal Kombat movie. So I'm not even sure you can count her.

I have to give a lot of credit to the set designers. When they weren't doing those how did I not notice as a kid awful cgi transitions, the individual sets were really cool. Annihilation had some too, they just decided to go wayy heavier with the awful CGI.

The soundtracks to both are still active in my workout playlists.

I think they killed Sub-Zero in the first movie in such a lame way (also in a way that wouldn't actually work) because they realised they made him by far the strongest fighter in the tournament. Of the few fighters who legit had super powers? His were portrayed in the most broken manner.

Yeah.. they took the video game mechanic because it was cool.. and were like "Well fuck people won't just thaw out the moment he touches them... Just make them shatter.. way cooler."

"How are they gonna defeat him?"

"Uhh...."

I wasn't saying that casting would have fixed Annihilation. Just that the original was so well cast and Annihilation was a terrible disappointment as a result.

New Sonya had nothing on the lovely Veronica Vaughn.. I liked Jax... Highlander Raiden very much missed.

The first was really good at combining fan service with an actual film surrounding it. Annihilation is just fan service packaged with awful cgi and nothing else.

OO is a gacha game with some pretty extreme whiplash in quality. The main thing as far as the story is concerned is that the first Act is *garbage* outside of a couple of goofy interactions (such as Seifer having his "sorcerous knight" bit translated a bit goofily as suddenly there were a lot of magic users about), but with the first intermission -> Act 2 the story got actually bafflingly well written. To the point that it caused people to actually buy Type 0 because it was so well done (only to have their expectations crushed because the character writing in that game is really bad by design).

And while I would love a X-3, I just cannot see it being good at this stage. If anything I would want a prequel as a Braska/Jecht/Auron journey would be quite interesting even if it basically couldn't have any real punches done.

Type-0 is another hazy one.. I think any FF I haven't played more than once has just floated away from me. Lol.

I just remember thinking it felt like they threw every FF into a blender, dumped it out onto a table, gave you a spoon and said "Dinner is served!"

Yeah.. I really don't know where they would go with a X-3.. It's pretty much set up for everyone to just live domestic lives. They'd have to introduce a new threat, which just won't go well at all.

A prequel would be badass.. Seeing younger versions of the characters. Updated blitzball with Jecht as the captain. Show us sides of the three that we've never seen before. Plus seeing the actual final summoning would be really cool.

Ye, their follow-up writing is *really* bad. It's what makes Opera Omnia so bizarre as the juxtaposition that it does (such as Tidus and Ceodore as characters who have inverted issues with their fathers) is generally extremely well done.

And yeah, I keep up with absolutely anything FF. Heck, I still have the FFIX audio drama stashed somewhere + a bunch of obscure JP-only games. X-3... was pretty bad.

Opera Omnia is another hazy one for me. I played the shit out of it when it first came out, but I can't remember much. And I will take an actual X-3 just so they can erase that low rate fan fiction from existence.

X-2 wasn't even off base with Yuna opening up and doing some weird shit considering she spent her whole life repressed. But god the execution was awful.

But then.. I don't know if you've read what happens after X-2.. but it's the most literal definition of character assassination.

So that does that mean the After Years count too? Seemed awful, but I got the PSP copy. I never bought into the Cloud, oh it's Zach thing.

I can barely remember After Years.. it's been so long.

In their base games, Cloud is a far more interesting character with a lot more development. Cloud's identity crisis treads along the lines of actual dissociative identity disorder. He created a version of himself that would be able to handle what he had gone through. Not saying that it's true DID, but it's more intriguing than people who talk down on it make it out to be.

At least to me.. and especially in comparison to a character who's development/story is honestly less intriguing than the majority of FF protagonists. I'd rank him below everyone but Butz, Firion, and Vaan/Ashe/Whoever.

Cecil is an identity crisis done right

Nah.

Does evil shit. Has a bit of dialogue about feeling guilty. New party member quests. Goes through a trial and the identity crisis is over.

I mean if you favor the simplicity of it I can see your preference. Cloud's identity crisis is literally inflicted on the player as you're lied to for the majority of the game. Hints scattered throughout to sow seeds of doubt. All culminating in a lovely "Holy shit" moment that provides some of the best character development in FF. Followed by Advent Children shitting on all of that development.

And anyone who says it's confusing must not have paid much attention. Considering I understood it as a 9 year old, it can't be that complex.

Its probably the best movie of the three, though I admit I have basically no recollection of anything in Unbreakable because I haven't seen it in like 10+ years.

Definitely the ending puts the whole movie on a bit of a sour note - seemingly randomly connecting it to Unbreakable and giving a whole super-power thing kind of makes the movie end really weird - as does the kind of "traumatic abuse makes you stronger" thing it pushes a bit.

Like it seems like M.Night couldn't actually figure out a real ending, and so dropped sequel bait instead because otherwise they probably wouldn't have given him a movie. Especially because Split is really the movie that made M. Night not a joke anymore.

In an actual super hero universe, the Beast would be a really interesting super villain. But the movie has you in an entirely different world for 95% of the movie. I might frame it as his strength was born from a strong belief in that he was indeed a Beast born to dominate other life forms.

I can see the trauma making you stronger message, but in the long run the Beast is there to protect Kevin. Despite the very literal super powers, the actual person himself isn't any stronger and is likely further damaged because of the Beast.

I don't know it's kind of confusing and I really wish it would have ended differently. I'm gonna watch Unbreakable and Glass again though. I don't recall them all that well now that I think about it.

Watching it again, because I love the movie despite not being sure about the ending.

Firstly, James McAvoy is fucking amazing in this.. How each personality has their own idiosyncrasies and speech patterns. Even his facial expressions are unique between each.

But man.. I adore this movie as a psychological thriller. Just the fact that there's like.. a super powers aspect to it.. I dunno.

I know Unbreakable set up the universe so it's not out of line.. but it just seems like Split would have been so much better as a standalone movie that just centered around a dude with multiple personalities with no special powers.
