One of the challenges in the painting in Banjo's house features him collecting a few of the notes in one of the rooms. As a result those notes end up actually getting saved as collected, but not counting towards your total. But as long as you do RBB first it doesn't matter. It's like those people who said Xenoblade 2's combat sucks because "you can just not do anything at all and have auto-attack do the work" when you need an end-game build to do something like that.
